US companies use high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar because our government places a 350% tariff on sugar imports and gives massive subsidies to corn farmers. Those two acts in combination are the only reason high fructose corn syrup is (much) cheaper than sugar.

The sugar tariff in particular is also why confectioners like Hershey's leave the US to manufacture elsewhere and then ship the finished product to the US with a tariff closer to 0%.
>>
>>112587398
Many people are addicted to sugary food, read corn syrup, and then cannot stop eating and become morbidly obese. Can you relate?
>>
>>112586770
farmers are paid to keep corn production low just to keep prices stable. If we actually harvested all corn fields it would cost about $4/ton which is not enough to cover farming costs.

>Just 9 percent of exported goods are foods, feeds and beverages ($131 billion). The big three are soybeans ($24 billion), meat/poultry ($17 billion), and corn ($11 billion)

Yes, because people eat a shitload of food at once and dont exercise. Thinking we are fat because of corn syrup and not strictly because of a lazy mentality and lack of control over appetites because we don't consume enough nutrients in the foods we choose to each as people tend to like to eat certain foods every day rather than a variety.

Sugar is just as guilty as corn syrup.

> What is chewing

lad pls

> Starch in corn can be less digestible if the corn is not ground up, either in food processing or the digestive tract. When sweet corn is consumed and not completely chewed, some will pass through the digestive tract and escape digestion and absorption. Resistant starch is considered similar to dietary fiber – and is under-consumed in the U.S. diet. So the lack of digestibility of corn would be considered a positive rather than a negative, generally.

That's the thing about farming. Once a year you go out and you pick all your crops so you can sell them, and then you plant the crops again. But when you're planting the new crops you can instead plant other crops, different new crops, you see? Not corn, other things. And this opportunity comes every single year. There are so many things you can grow. You can grow beetroot and potatoes and lettuce. You could grow hemp, a useful and profitable crop that has been legal to grow in the US since 2014. You can grow avocados,to stop buying them from Mexico. You can grow miscanthus for biomass or tobacco for the necessary enzyme for the creation of cellulosic bioethanol. The possibilities are many!

I can't believe how long it took for everyone to figure out this was about Mexico buying US grown corn. It's been long known that with globalization Mexico doesn't grow enough corn for it's population because they import it instead. When the US switched to 10% ethanol we spiked the price of corn and created massive shortages in Mexico.

This would hurt American farmers and the surrounding economy in the short term and congress would probably pass some farm relief. Production and prices will eventually stabilize but in the meantime everyone suffers a little all because President Trump wants to play around with his wall and leaving NAFTA.

Good. It would be better if the US ended farming subsidies on corn completely. Corn has turned into the boogie man and Jesus of the farming industry. Simultainiously a source of harm and good. It can be used to make fuel, feed, a huge number if food products, textiles, cosmetics, plastics, you name it. On the other hand, corn is in everything, in many things it should not be. Things like high fructose corn syrup, animal feed, a huge number of food addatives. The problem is corn has become so monolithic it begins to exert a negative influence. It has driven down the cost of junk food incredibly, pesticides and GMO is ubiquitous in products containing corn derivatives (A LOT of stuff), and crop genetic/biodiversity has fallen off a cliff.

I think corn needs to be knocked off the pedastal, along with soy. Over reliance on too few crops has proven fatal in the past. I fear its only a matter of time before a disease (natural or engineered) befalls corn and soy and wipes out a continents worth of food.

Corn is very important to American politics because they have the second in the nation primaries. Bending over and taking corn farmers dicks deep in the ass by politicians looking to get their favor so they can become president is the reason your car's gasoline is 10% corn-ethanol.

Corn is one of the worst plants on the planet to grow for food because of how much fucking water it requires, along with pesticides, fertilizers, and energy spent on it to turn it into something usable by the public. The anti-global warming crowd should burn down every corn field, and every store selling corn products if they are serious about protecting the planet from human activity (rice being the only plant worse for global warming due to the amount of methane it gives off--- rice is literally the source of more than 67% of all methane from human related activities).

Only problem is: Mexico doesn't dare to fuck with the corn coming from the US. Why? Because it feeds the majority of Mexico's poor people. When US farms cut back on growing corn for food and moved to growing better bio-fuels, Mexico (and lots of other countries in the world) had riots because the cost of CORN rose in their country by 33% and the poor started starving because they could no longer buy enough to feed themselves and their 13 kids.

So, Mexico can't really threaten American Corn. But corn is extremely important politically.

If most of the US was suitable for growing sugar, we'd never had started growing tobacco as a cash crop centuries ago.

Most of the US is unsuitable for growing sugar cane. But it is fine for growing corn, which is why corn is grown from the southern border of the US to its northern border. Most of the corn sold in the US is grown in the US using corn subsidies. We have so much corn we export 13% of it.

>In the 2014/2015 crop marketing year, (Sept. 1- Aug. 31) the United States grew nearly 14.2 billion bushels (360 million metric tons) of corn and roughly 13 percent of production was exported to more than 100 different countries.

Ethanol from corn sucks. It takes so much energy to make it, which means you are seriously wasting resources to be able to claim a check mark for green source fuels.

That's why there's so much research into other sources for making ethanol in the US. Cause its worse for the environment/globe, and much more expensive, than just drilling for oil. So the people that are serious about sustainability and those that are serious about "avoiding oil and worse energy sources", have discarded corn as a possible source for green oriented energy/fuel.

No. Corn is used to make ethanol because of government subsidizes. Corn is one of the worst possible plants to use to make ethanol. It's about 4x as much work (energy) to turn into ethanol than sugar cane, for instance, and when you add in growing corn, it really shoots up its costs and lost energy.

Stop finding little mistakes in the logical of someones articulation, Its your cunt excuses to not think about what matters. The corn was engineered to kill the pests that eat it. If it poisons pests, then it will poison people and animals. Then there are the glyphosates, that kill weeds by killing off the soils microbes, the plant absorbed the glyphosates, and if we eat them, then the glyphosates kill of the microbes in your digestive system. The diesel engine was not designed to run off of "diesel fuel". Instead, Mr. Diesel actually designed his engine to run off of a variety of fuels. Everything from peanut oil to coal dust.

The fact that modern diesel vehicles are chained to "diesel fuel" is a testament to just how cucked we are by corporations.

That's because sugar was the most expensive and sought after substance on the planet at the time. It's why everyone decided "Lets take a bunch of slaves over to the caribean and the Americas and FUCKING GROW SUGAR! We'll be richer than the monarchy!"

Turns out, only a few places in the US can properly grow sugar cane. And its almost all near the Gulf of Mexico. That's why the rest of the South started growing tobacco. It was still a huge luxury, but not as valuable as sugar. They had no choice but to do that (and later cotton), because sugar cane just wouldn't grow there.

And the only reason they had the slave labor to grow tobacco (and later cotton) was because of the slaves being brought over for the sugar cane plantations.

It was the European monarchs (and the richest of the aristocrats) willingness to pay extreme amounts of wealth for sugar that caused so much slavery in the new world. So that means its the monarchy that is responsible for the nigger problem in America. Thanks Yer Fuckin Majesty.

Because our subsidized corn isnt killing the mexican farmers already?

Mexico fucks over their own just to get cheaper than dirt corn from the us.

Perhaps well stop making so much corn: might make people here and there less fat.

The original diesel engine was designed to run off vegetable oil.

They swapped to oil based diesel because it has more power.

The reason cars use gasoline instead of kerosene is because it gives more power.

Corn is a horrible source feed to use to make ethanol. There are much better feed stock sources.

Corn is only got so much push in the US due to politics--- that second in a nation primary status.

Ethanol should not be in your gasoline. Ethanol attracts water, ruins your engine, and lowers the energy you get from burning the gasoline. This means you have to burn more gas, not less of it.

There's a documentary out about just how much corn is used in food in the form of high fructose corn syrup. Go into your pantry and IND just how much shit has a corn byproduct in it. You may surprise yourself.
That said, we make and use plenty of it here. If not to Mexico, we will find somewhere else to ship it or just grow something else. Or just use more, unfortunately.

Mexico is looking for leverage to fight back against trump and this is probably as good as it gets for them. And yes, Mexico boycotting American corn would hurt our economy in the short term. In the long run I think it might be beneficial for everyone. We need to get off corn subsidies.
>Mexico boycotts American corn
>This is a boon to South American economies
>our ag industry dips
>with our share of the corn market smaller, subsidies dwindle away
>stuff we put corn in (everything) gets a little more expensive
>This causes more producers to move away from corn sweeteners
>further depressing the corn market
>without forced demand, farmers turn to more diverse crops
>corn Sweetened stuff and meat is more expensive globally
>everything else gets cheaper
>ag takes a beating for a few years but emerges leaner, stronger, and more stable
>Mexico is pushed away from the US and towards south American relationships
>in the end, the US economy end up being a more efficient food producer and Mexico restores it's own corn markets
>fewer Mexicans trying to leave
>stronger Mexican economy results in stronger Mexican government that actually has enough skin in the game to try and fix shit instead of just living on paco-bux wired back for burger land
>the wall does the rest

Sounds fine to me fampi. The only problem is, as previously stated, Mexico probably can not survive the transition to more expensive tortillas

They didn't, the graph shows China stopped importing american corn (due to the detection of an unapproved gene). So they began to grow more corn locally, and increased buying from Brazil, Argentina and Ukraine.
>>

We subsidize this corn anyways. If we stop exporting corn our taxes will go down and the fucking farmers can grow other shit. Theyll actually have a choice where they do not now since the government is interfering with the market.

American corn industry is about $76B annually.

In 2015 only about $2.4B of that was exported south.

Obviously corn growers want more markets to sell to, but Mexico is a very, very small part of it.

>we're enforcing immigration laws now
Obama was the deporter in chief, remember? They're "mad" now because trump is a divisive figure and they can abuse that to manipulate perception into getting people to back off the immigration issue. Liberal leaning sites/news agencies will go ham with this saying trump is destroying the economy and ruining hard working citizens' lives giving mexico added political capital to push things the way they want. Before liberal media would cover for obama or generally ignore the discussion entirely. It's politics. Perception is truth.

wut.
We export corn to Mexico. Our subsidy backed corn caused riots due to small Mexican farmers not being able to sell their corn and it caused millions to lose their livelihoods. Ironically, this then fueled the immigration issues we see today.
Mexico buying less of our corn is just the market fixing itself.

Mexico gets good jobs at home. America has to stop subsidizing corn. Farmers go back to growing other shit since corn subsidies and ethanol is why they grow so God damn much . You un-fucking-believably massive idiot you think we'd just *switch* to cane sugar just like that? Holy fucking hell you mental midget you have no idea the amount of infrastructure, time, labor, and money that would be needed to transition from corn-syrup, which is in LITERALLY EVERYTHING to fucking sugar cane. Do you know how much land is dedicated to corn, how many jobs, how many barely getting by small towns that absolutely depend on corn? You dense motherfucker it would collapse damn near the entire mid-west economy and plunge the region into an economic despair it hasn't felt since the fucking dustbowl. Morons like you fucked everyone else over with your moron logic and now me and everyone I know gets to suffer for decades to come.
