I can't believe how long it took for everyone to figure out this was about Mexico buying US grown corn. It's been long known that with globalization Mexico doesn't grow enough corn for it's population because they import it instead. When the US switched to 10% ethanol we spiked the price of corn and created massive shortages in Mexico.

This would hurt American farmers and the surrounding economy in the short term and congress would probably pass some farm relief. Production and prices will eventually stabilize but in the meantime everyone suffers a little all because President Trump wants to play around with his wall and leaving NAFTA.

Good. It would be better if the US ended farming subsidies on corn completely. Corn has turned into the boogie man and Jesus of the farming industry. Simultainiously a source of harm and good. It can be used to make fuel, feed, a huge number if food products, textiles, cosmetics, plastics, you name it. On the other hand, corn is in everything, in many things it should not be. Things like high fructose corn syrup, animal feed, a huge number of food addatives. The problem is corn has become so monolithic it begins to exert a negative influence. It has driven down the cost of junk food incredibly, pesticides and GMO is ubiquitous in products containing corn derivatives (A LOT of stuff), and crop genetic/biodiversity has fallen off a cliff.

I think corn needs to be knocked off the pedastal, along with soy. Over reliance on too few crops has proven fatal in the past. I fear its only a matter of time before a disease (natural or engineered) befalls corn and soy and wipes out a continents worth of food.
