Hi there, do you guys think this thing may be too difficult for a 1st timer?

Truth to tell I actually wanted to 3D printed it, but it turned out the thing is too big to be printed, so /diy/ told me to turn it into a papercraft thing.

Is there a way to...degrade the model so it would be more blocky?

If you want make it by paper you need to decrease the total faces on the model.

Haha, OK. I took you guys's advice Simplified and cut it by hand.

It looks grotesque though, and there is no symmetry. I used Window's shitty default 3D viewer to auto-simplify it, so that's probably the problem.

I created this model in SolidWorks. I have no knowledge whatsoever in any other 3D program. What should I use to simplify the model?

Waaaaaay too many vertices in that model.
You are making a dome shaped...thing, but paper can never be anything but flat. But you can get close; and if you coat the papercraft after it will look very smooth. Gesso paint, or if you fiberglass resin it you can put body filler over it.

Because I made a SUUUPER smooth, hi-res model in SolidWorks, then used the automatic Simplify feature in Windows 10's default 3D viewer.

I guess it's the 3D version of repeatedly save something in jpeg?

I don't know what else to do.

Not him, but you should look into the retopology features of your editor. Then like he's done, try and stick to building your form out of horizontal or vertical bands where possible.

I currently use Metasequoia4, its good at doing low poly stuff so its suited for papercraft.
Not sure how to share my "skills". I just started making models one day, best way to start is to just start, make mistakes, fool around with tools, watch some tutorials.
I think I have improved a lot since I started about 5 years ago, but my most popular pepakura is still one I made 4 years a go *pic related*.

selecte faces > filter > remeshig > quadric edge collapse decimation.
