OP, if you dont have experience with 3D modeling software, Wings3D is a good start, there's not much of a learning curve and it can export to .obj. And pepakura is free, (you can get the licence keys for free online) plus it's basically importing and spamming Ctrl+L to get it the right size.

make sure to use cardstock if its a large model.

designing a papercraft isn't a lot of work. Designing a good papercraft that doesn't suck is a lot of work.
Its literally an hour at most to brute force your way through blender tutorials(even less if using a pre-existing model), shove that into pepakura's horrid auto unfold, turn on edge numbering, export to pdf, and call it done.
