My school is giving me a $2,000 technology grant (I'm an MSc in compsci doing research with computer vision). I figure a lens or lenses are appropriate.
>Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8
>Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8
I was thinking these two with $200 to spare. I shoot Nikon crop; do you guys think it's a good idea?

shouldnt you be using the grant money for the research? presumably that's why they gave you a grant for.
>>3139770
not op but technology grant usually implies materials used in research
>>3139771
yeah, but it doesn't sound like he's buying any of this to use it for his research

It's not our problem when they demand the grant money back after finding out OP bought toys for himself.

Lol, no, why spend $2k on lenses for a $300 body that will be useless when you upgrade your body and have shit resale value.
Get a 24 - 70 and 70 - 200 or a trio of ff primes

This. A 70-200 VRII is under 2k used. A trio of 1.8G primes is $1800. An 80-400G VR is under 2k used. 16-35 VR is $1000. 70-200 2.8 VR is $1000 used. An 85/1.4G is $1500.
The 18-35 might be worth it, the 50-100 is going to be a portrait specialty lens.
