Simply epic.
To make matters worse, I fell for the DSLR meme AND the APSC meme as well.
Now comes the question, do I sell my camera and never look back, or do I sell it and buy a better one? Do I buy better lenses? Who knows.

Now there's your problem, you're just lazy and stupid. If you can't take a good picture with a dslr, it's your fault, not the cameras.
>Now comes the question, do I sell my camera and never look back, or do I sell it and buy a better one? Do I buy better lenses?
Yes OP, buying more expensive cameras will definitely fix your problem! Remember your lenses must be at least f1.4 to even consider taking better photos. And at least 25+ megapixels.
Post some of your pentax photos btw.

Really depends on what you're going for. Personally I've found it really shines in how far you can push the raws. The out of camera results are not great. I'd highly recommend using some sort of editor to adjust the raws to your liking and you'll be able to make presets pretty quickly
It's certainly not the camera that you buy to do anything effortlessly though. It really shines when you put a little work into your edits and come up with a proper workflow for

okay so first torrent/buy/download lightroom.
visit youtube and find a beginner tutorial. I vaguely remember a guy who did exposure with a picture of a boat, he was good but i forgot his name.
While you are downloading/installing lightroom look up some basic composition theory because that can also greatly increase the quality of your pics

I suppose I want my shots to look, I dunno, atmospheric?
The main issue is that I take fucking forever to get the settings right. Let's say for example I want to take a picture of a bird, I'll sit there taking a shot, looking at it, it's shit, it's too fucking bright, so I'll adjust settings, take it again, still much to bright, again, too bright, again, too dark now. I usually take like 200-300 or so pictures while I'm out and I'll only like, at most 5 of them.
By the way, I should have mentioned this sooner but I only shoot manual. Why? I don't fucking know, but I'm pretty dedicated to manual only for some reason.
Should I buy a Samyang 16mm f/2 and a Samyang 85 mm f/1.4?
Would they be good purchases? Would they be shit?
At the moment, the only lens I use (since I no longer use the kit lens) is the pentax 40mm limited pancake lens.
Is the K-50 fine or should I try get a K-70?
I'm not made of money though so I can either get the lenses first or the camera, I can't get both at the moment.

One of the benefits of working with raw is you can adjust the exposure after the fact. Generally you dont want to push it too far but like I said the k-50 raws are pretty malleable
From what I've seen the k-50 raws prefer being underexposed a little and then pull shadow detail up if desired
the 40mm is a fantastic lens. Better than any of the lenses I've used for it
>Is the K-50 fine or should I try get a K-70?

Just use your kit lens for now, buying more stuff may wow you initially but won't make your pictures any better. And typically people shoot thousands of images before any real improvement. This shit requires patience, reading and learning by experience. If ya can't deal with that find another hobby.
>>3128797
stop doing the manual stuff for now.
Use aperture priority for slow moving shots and control over your DOF, shutterspeed priority for moving stuff. there is no shame in going full auto if you need to catch the shot because you will only get one chance.
just learn one facet at a time, there is no point in trying to get a feeling for aperture, shutterspeed and ISO at the same time.
grab some pics you like and load them into lightroom, even if you just bang the auto button in lightroom most pictures will improve quite a bit, but some more magic with the sliders can make boring shots look interesting. so just start experimenting.
and shoot RAW, even if you fuck the shot up lightroom can often recover quite a bit.

Anon, aside for all the other pieces of advice in this thread, take into account smartphones do cheat a fucking lot with image quality and rely almost completely on two things due to the fact all of them use a sensor like 5 or 6 times smaller than the one on your cam:
- Heavy amounts of automatic post-processing done on the fly.
- Downsampling xboxhueg images with a meme-tier amount of megapickles their sensor just cannot resolve at all to a smartphone screen size.
The moment you try to use a smartphone to capture extremely detailed scenes like vegetation or grass the illusion is quickly broken as the sensor doesn't have enough resolution to resolve it and will just end up filling areas out of the autofocus with artifacting green blotches while your camera will manage to render grass correctly.
>>3128797
Are you using the exposure meter within the viewfinder? It tells you when you're under/over/properly-exposed. There is no reason you should have to retake a photo that many times if you use the meter.
>Why does it have to be difficult!? My sister's smartphone takes way better pictures with way less effort. This tool is inferior in every way.
>Oh, BTW, I shoot full manual.
So you took the training wheels off the bike before you could even ride, and then got upset when you fell. Not only that, you threw a tantrum and insisted that your sister's tricycle was better because it was easier. Then you deluded yourself into thinking that it wasn't YOUR fault, but the bike's.
>Maybe if I buy more expensive tires and wheels, I won't fall this time! It's not because I don't know how to ride a bike!
I honestly wanted to help you at first, but your shitty, entitled attitude changed my mind by the time I was typing the end of this post. I think you should work on THAT before anything else. You'll never make it far in life—especially photograhy—if you're that impatient.

The phone part of my comment was mostly referring to pictures of people. Her phone takes more...flattering pictures I suppose compared to my camera.
In terms of vegetation and what not, I agree though, there's no way a phone can get as sharp as say, pic related.

Because they're the type to buy things without research, then complain about it on internet. As you can see by the fact that they don't even use the exposure bar...the most basic tool for beginners starting out.
>>3128814
>It's pretty damn hard to see so I tend not to use it much.
Not that anon but if you want to shoot manual, using the viewfinder is almost mandatory.
My advice: put the training wheels back on and ditch the manual mode for now. Learn how do Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes work and what they exactly do, then leave ISO on Auto for now.
Then, after a few weeks when you truly understand the exposure triange and feel you are the one actually controlling the camera and not the other way around, start trying to use manual mode for scenes you're familiar with.

lmfao,
what plays music better, a guitar or a cd?
Photography is a skill, just like playing an instrument, speaking a language or whittling wood.
Unless you put in more practice and effort than 90% of other people, your photos are not going to be in the top 10%. With the ubiquity of cameras, this involved tens of hours every week over many months to stand proud from the average person.

If you keep the attitude you have then you're never getting better. > do I sell it and buy a better one? Do I buy better lenses?
Buying more/more expensive gear will not make a fucking difference. The bottle-neck for newbies is not their camera or their lenses not being good enough, it's post-processing and lighting.
POST-PROCESSING is the biggest reason newbies are disappointed that their pictures from 2 thousand dollars PROFESSIONAL DSLR doesn't take pics as good as their iphone.
The second biggest reason is SHIT LIGHTING. Taking pictures in the middle of the day makes all environments look like SHIT. And if we're talking about taking pictures of people, you can manipulate the lighting by using off-camera flash and/or light-modifiers to make light your bitch even in the middle of the day. Lighting gear is the only bit of gearfagging that I will allow you to indulge in because lighting is pretty big fucking deal in photography, way more than any camera body or lens.
If you're not into doing the WORK that it takes to make nice pictures yourself and you only bought a DSLR because you thought ``good cameras take good pictures'' and you wanted something better than your shitty phone, then you should cut your losses and get the latest iPhone who's software does all of that for you.

TV mode. Shutter to 640 or 500. F stop will hover around 6.3 to 7.1 in daylight. Set iso to 200.
the k50 comes with photo editing software to process the raw files. you can also download snapseed and process raw files on your phone if you transfer them with the wifi.
dXo optics gives away older versions of their software. it supports the k50 and just about every pentax lens made. i think, except for the newest plm zoom.
