I just got it 2 weeks ago as my first digital in a long time. Got gr2 I like it a lot as a companion to my film compact. I think if you want to just get the gr1 because it's cheaper. Snap focus is hilarious for street shooting even though I don't really do it. It's lightning fast. You can take a picture before anyone even realizes what's in your hand.
>>3127706
no i mean in /rpt/ and in that youtuber's video, idk, i expected ugly looking shots from this camera but they're all really good looking and sharp. idk if i actually want to buy a camera without the manual focus and manual zoom around the lens
>>3127712
yeah i've been considering it. i mean i'm still between this GR, Fuji X-T10, or save some more for a Sony mirrorless. but is there any point of owning a GR if i have an iphone 7 ?
>>3127715
My man iPhone is peanuts compared to the gr. I also have a galaxy s7.

I like the large sensor compacts a lot. A friend of mine has the GR2 and I recently picked up an X70. Both awesome cameras.

It's a great camera. Had mine for a year and a half before it shit the bed and died completely, Ricoh wanted $500 to fix it.
the 28mm equiv is a bit wide for my tastes but you get used to it

aperture wouldn't open when you turned the camera on, making me take a blank shot before it worked. that evolved into the lens being stuck in the out position, which eventually evolved into the camera refusing to operate at all, citing an error code of which there is no documentation anywhere.
I sent it to Ricoh and they said they would only replace the entire lens assembly instead of trying to diagnose the problem, to the tune of 500 australian shekels (aka more than I paid for the camera in the first place). Obviously I said no
Mine's served me well the past few years. It's worn out, the sensor is filthy, but it still snapps like I want it to. It's a great little camera, especially with a finder in the hot shoe.
Don't ever send the thing in for warranty sensor cleaning, especially not to Precision Camera. Don't ask why, just don't. Get a screw driver and a blower brush and do it yourself if you're feeling adventurous.
>>3127783

The Fuji lineup is literal shit because of the controls and menu layout. Ricoh's are fully customisable.

no but digital pocket cams can zoom with buttons

>The Fuji lineup is literal shit because of the controls and menu layout. Ricoh's are fully customisable.
t. someone that never used a film camera and doesn't understand the value of being able to dial in settings with the camera turned off
The only thing about the Ricoh GR that is superior to the Fuji X70 is that the Ricoh lens is slightly better and the X70 doesn't have snapfocus.
>>3128082
The only reason to do this is if you have a handheld light meter or know sunny 16 like a pro. But not like it takes much longer to turn on a GR and get the settings in if not already set.
>>3128723
lol amateurs thinking its complicated to know when you need 1/500 for a moving subject
>>3128723
this isn't remotely true at all. you have clearly never used a manual camera and also clearly have no understanding of exposure
I've owned one since it came out.
It's a great camera will lots of custimizability.
But it's not a general purpose camera. It has a specialized application.
But I wouldn't buy again.
Mainly due to no viewfinder, low frame rate, and blackout after shots, and shit video.
Image quality is slightly better than my iPhone 5.
My 6s blows it out the water.
>>3128776

>>3128776

Hey, guys, what about fuji x70? Just received it. Wanted to get a compact point-and-shoot and firstly decided to buy ricoh, but it turned out, that it was not in stock in most shops, so i've chosen fuji with a decent discount. I'm shooting full auto, since I don't really understand the whole bunch of available settings. The problem is that in auto mode when there is not enough light the photos are blurry and as i see even my lg g4 takes better quality pictures. What am I doing wrong?

Your going to have to learn to shoot manual.

>Dat banding in sky
>>3128876
You're going to have to learn enough about the exposure triangle to be able to plug in good auto-ISO settings before it will really be a reliable point and shoot kind of camera for you.
Or just shoot in good light, and if it gets dark take advantage of the folding screen and set it down on things before you shoot. It's a very fun, versatile camera once you get the hang of it.

I own the GR, toyed with the X70 in a camera shop a few times. Also own a Fuji MILC but the GR is my favorite digital camera.
My pick is the GR because:
>Better lens
>Better ergonomics, perfect control layout for one hand operation
>Snap focus
>Touchscreen on the X70 didn't feel good to use in practice
>Black and white looks so good on the Ricoh
>Built in ND filter
The X70 does have a few things tho
>Much better colors with high iso
>Tilty screen
>Better OOC jpg's

I love it's convenience. You can customize it to a lot of shooting styles like street, or for me, low light shooting. The snap focus is brilliant for night shots since the focus is only fast in bright settings and shits out in indoor lighting, and good luck focusing in the dark.

okay but no one records video with the same camera they use to take photos. if you're a serious video person you might want to buy a serious video camera.
My GR just died. Lasted all day, and just seized up as soon as I walked through the doorway. Not sure if it quit on me early, or struggled to make it last one final day out.

But the Positive Film picture style coupled with correct white balance setting does produce some nice blues/reds and ok skin tones.

If u intend on using sooc with ricoh, the 'portrait' effect is really a difference maker with skin tones

How can a baby dick sensor be better than an APS-C sensor at capturing low light shots? Asking honestly, don't own neither an iPhone nor a GR.
If i wanted to get a GR, should i get the GR II new for like $600 or the older models like the Digitals are enough but for a fraction of the price?
Got one to take to Las Vegas in November, betting that it's ideal for nighttime streetscapes relative to its convenience.
>>3135297
You're confusing GR w/ GR Digital. Two different animals altogether, Ricoh's nonsensical branding notwithstanding.
Anyone have nighttime streetshit shot with GRD IV at ISO 3200? GR has risen from the grave but not sure for how long. Being able to shoot at night with deep DoF sounds neat.

Same here man, health issues suck thats why I'm looking for an alternative for my dlsr and the gr is the most ideal
I used it and still use it occasionally when traveling. It covered 70%+ of what I wanted to shoot so I was quite satisfied but I switched to a DSLR to cover the other 30%. Still a great camera though
gr iii tilt screen when?
d u s t fix never
>>3136848
>gr iii tilt screen when?
Hopefully never. the GR II got a hump for wi-fi which added bulk for a pretty useless feature, and a flip screen will only add more.
>>3136121
>the GRII
Fuck God. I was hoping it's a firmware update.
>>3136848
hopefully never. tiltscreen and touchscreen is a meme. it doesn't feel like real photography. if Ricoh wanted to make one with touchscreen and tiltscreen, they should make another series, NOT the GR, the GR is sacred and legendary and not as fad as X70
Any of you niggas know of a cheap viewfinder for this fucker?
I hate looking through that dumbass screen.
>>3136913
Sometines u can find the Ricoh one on amazon. I got the one that is 21mm aov bc I saw there was only 1 or 2 seller and after them a $75 price gap
>>3136923
I'm trying to avoid spending that much.
The cheapest I can find besides top kek Soviet ones is the Olympus VF-1 at €60.
>>3136993
Well now I found used VF-1 from Japan for €35 shipped from eBay.
Pretty solid deal, except I've decided I'm not going to spend anything and make my own finder instead.
>>3136993
>Olympus VF-1 at €60.
Better to spend more on something that works, than waste a small amount on something that doesn't.
Bought a second hand GR two days ago as an addition to my dSLR. Wanted a big sensor that was easy to take with me when I leave the house. First impressions are positive. The controls are well thought out and very customizable, it's easy to use with one hand and the grip is good.
Performance is good too, it's fast and sharp. I really like the default B&W effect, I mostly shoot B&W + RAW. ISO performance is fine, I turned off the noise reduction, up to 3200 the noise isn't distracting.
I wouldn't buy one new in Europe, it's almost 700 euros here and that's too compared to the alternatives. I do have some issues with dust, but for now it's fairly minor and I'll try to ignore it.
why are all the pics posted with a gr black and white
>>3137729
Its colors are worse than Sony and borderline impossible to make good looking in post. Buy a Canon, goy.
>>3137731
Damn, is this true? I like color photography and colors that pop. Can't post process to something good? This changes my mind
>>3137749
That's not true. You can see all the GR results in this board, they're actually great. Sony, Canon, Nikon, they're all the same. But Ricoh is something else.
>>3137653
>up to 3200 the noise isn't distracting.
Spot the digikiddie
>>3137729
Because it has a really good in camera B&W which after using a while learns you to see better, so people start to enjoy B&W more.
>>3137749
Ricoh colors are good SOOC and better with post processing.
The green tones are where most digishits fail(too much yellow) and blown out red channel (canon). GR has less of those.
I'd post some pics to compare 5D with GR but I'm phone and I've messed with the in camera color settings on both.
>>3137245
Probably right.
I'll wait until I can snag a decently priced used one off the German forums or something.
Meanwhile I've made my own.
Just needs some finishing touches, and a coat of paint.
And made a lens hood too so I can use a CPL.

Noise is insignificant. Even the noise at 25600 is not a problem.
>>3138101
In some cases it might not be a problem, but it depends on the purpose and the subject. I'm just giving my opinion, above 6400 the colors start to fade and the noise becomes an issue for me.
>>3138220
I don't disagree. Especially that 6400 and higher the colors start to go.
But this camera is a specialized camera.
If it was a DSLR maybe I would be bothered by the grain.
But for it's intended use (please, don't make me say the word), grain or not really makes no difference.
It doesn't distract or detract in any way.

I'd buy that for €20.
Just bought one myself
I don't really have much experience with photography but I wanted and needed a camera and figured I want something that's easy to carry around and is good quality and found bunch of reviews of it online. A friend who is professional photographer also recommended it.
>>3139410
Yeah, the Ricoh R1. It's fun albeit very plasticy. The AF is almost useless in low light, so be aware of that if you want to shoot indoors with it. If it can't find focus it focuses to 2.5m IIRC, so it works as sort of a crude snap focus.
