What the fuck kind of camera did you buy? DSLRs generally come with a handful of useless programmed settings and four you'll actually use:
>Programmed
Automatically sets f-stop and shutter speed
>Shutter Priority
Automatically sets f-stop based on user-set shutter speed
>Aperture priority
Same as above, reversed
>Manual
Self-explanatory

If your camera doesn't have those settings it's probably worthless. You'd be better off just using your phone

Shooting RAW in b&w is like buying a pack of pre-chewed gum.
Let's say you want to take a picture of blood running down a leaf. In person it looks great; the sharp red contrasting with the bright green. So you take the pic, in b&w of course because you're an artsy hipsterfag.
Then when you get home and review the pic of the computer, you realize the red and the green both just look like the same shade of grey. Looks like you took a picture of some light grey muck hardly visible on an equally grey leaf.
Had you not been retarded, and taken the pic in color with plans to change it in post, you'd be able to change the red of the blood to be much darker than the green of the leaf, turning a shitty snap into that artsy bullshit you crave.
