Can we talk photo projects?
I've been photographing for a couple of years now and I think it's time I took on an actual themed project.
However I'm really struggling to find a good theme to make the project around.... So far I'm thinking either multistorey car parks (dull as shit) or garden centres, florists and general plants in man made environments.
What have you done photo projects on?

all those ideas you listed are very much in the vein of "trying too hard to think of an idea for a photo project"

you're only going to come up with contrived or cliche ideas if you're actively trying to think of something.

I would say wait until you have an idea strike you or until you start to notice a natural theme emerge in your photography habits as far as what you are interested in subject wise and that type of thing.

you can not force inspiration.

sorry if my english isn't good

A guy I know did a great project on man made animal habitats in zoos and it's fantastic. The emptiness of the habitats produce a very distinctive theme.

I see what you mean but currenty I'm shooting street photography whenever I shoot and it's getting a bit samey. There hasn't been any theme emerge aside from street photography itself which is too broad.

"Starting from zero is difficult though. Always be on the lookout for a project. I was at a Mexican restaurant earlier this year and was watching the Mariachi band roam around the restaurant. The lead guy was fascinating and was pouring his heart out with each song they played out. “I’ve got to photograph that guy.” I said. Bam! Personal project! Not just that guy… more like him. Like, I have to start showing up at Mexican restaurants every weekend now to shoot for this.

I was walking my son to his class the first day of school last year and saw this awesome light coming through the windows of one of the classrooms. “That’s awesome light. I should shoot some portraits here.” Boom! Personal project!

Watching a news program about a white man killing a black man. Everyone was talking “race”. I wondered if maybe it had more to do with “culture” instead of just “race”. Personal project.

Was in the ‘burbs this weekend. Drove through an industrial park. Nearly every building had a “for lease” sign on it. Hmmmm. There’s a story there. Wonder if there’s a project there.

When I’m in New York I always love looking at the light reflecting off windows onto other things. Hmmmm. Personal project?

Look for things that grab your attention. They pique your interest. They make you google stuff. These kind of things can turn into personal projects. Ever looked at discarded things? Project. Intrigued by a culture of people in your town? Project. Are you a Democrat? Have some stereotypical view of what Republicans look like? Project. Break the stereotype or enforce it. Love dive bars? Project. Think nightculbs are stupid? Project. Always dreamed of being an astronaut when you were a kid? Ask kids in your neighborhood what they dream of. Make up sets and costumes and …. project!"

check out the post he links to at the start as well

Just shoot what you like, and what you find interesting. If you can shoot parking decks in a way that makes them visually interesting then fucking run with that. Or just keep shooting, and you may find your strength lies elsewhere.

A while ago, I started walking around my city with a wide angle lens with the intent of getting close up candid shots of people a la Bruce Gilden, but the only photos I liked were of dogs. A few months later, I have a whole series of candid dog photos.

I went to shoot reflections in street signs, either during night or a rainy day or both and while some shots turned out fine the majority was crap. But maybe Ill inspire someone else
I blame the crappy shots on my material but maybe I am just shit myself
