Would the Sony a6000 with kit lens be a good start for a beginner, or is the kit lens fairly bad?

How would a better lens help a beginner?

I won't be buying any more lens for a bit. I'm also concerned with the variety of e-mount lens and cost.

You need quite a bit of training with sony cameras because they are flimsy and their ergonomics is more catered towards talon-handed mutants from outer space than actual humans.
If you want a secure bid, go with a canon 750 or 650.

Is /p/ so positive on the a6000 as a joke?

No, /p/ loves Sony, you can tell by all the threads being made every day being made about the superiority of Sony and the inferiority of everyone else.
