Assuming I can get both for around $400 with a 18-55mm G VR lens, but the 3400 comes with an additional 70-300mm lens, which one should I get. I'm worried I'll come to regret not having an audio port. Are there add-ons to get by with this, or is audio better recorded on a separate device?

yes

You can get a near mint d7100 and 18-55 for $450. I would get the best body you can, then worry about extra lenses - the 70-300 is dirt cheap.

What do you recommend?
Variable Aperture Lenses Suck.
Buy used 2.8 lenses at 1/4 the cost of new.

>Is audio better recorded on a separate device?
Yes. The onboard mic is irredeemably bad. Only use it to match up audio in post.
But the real question is, do you really need the audio input? There are plenty of little devices you can buy that'll record audio for you.
It really depends on what you want to record. If you want to go out and about shooting documentaries, then yes. If you want to shoot narrative stuff, stuff where you'll get a chance to set up and plan what you're shooting in a controlled environment, then no. You should put your recording device somewhere where it will record audio better, which won't always be on top of the camera.
In the end, unless you know exactly what you want to do with it, it's better to go with the most flexible option. Get the 3400 since it comes with two lenses.

Actually, ignore what I just said. The 3400 fucking sucks without an audio input. You need that flexibility.
Look in to buying a d3300. If what I've heard is right it comes with everything the 3400 does, only cheaper.
