Hey guys, I bet I can guess the next film Fuji will kill off.

Better stock up.

Never shot this due to it's criminal price in Europe.
What's it like?
>>

Really good. Amazing for anything from sunny day to night shooting. I've rated it anywhere between 400 and 2000 on the same roll and then developed normally and it came out terrific

Cheap developer scans though. Haven't picked up a film scanner yet (recomendations anyone?)

What's happening on the left side? Window frame?
>>
>>3092644

A wall.

I was leaning over a railing to take the shot. There is a window there too, but it has a weird coating on it and I wasn't sure how it'd turn out, so I wanted a shot not going through it. I thought I had the wall out of the frame but I didn't realize the viewfinder wasn't 100%.

I want to buy Minolta X-700, people say its bad quality, anyone have opinions about this machine?
>>
>>3092649

I have one. It is a pretty solid camera.

I hear the caps are prone to blowing, but it is an easy fix for a repair shop.

The other X-500 is supposed to be a little bit tougher, plus it shows metered and set shutter speed in the viewfinder which is pretty nice.

X-600 has focus confirmation if you can find it. But they are rare, and a little fragile. The film wind lever on mine sometimes needs a second pull.
>>
Couldn't decide wheter to post my question here or in the gear thread.

I got myself a Canon Canonet 28 for 15 bucks, seems to be in a good condition, only the lightseal is falling apart.
Is it easy and worth it to replace the lightseal or should I just sell it?

>>
Made my first batch of d-76 a couple nights ago.
I'm sure when I mixed the powder with water, the water was not warm enough so there was still some small pieces suspended in the solution so I just decided to leave it for a few days. That was Wednesday, it's Saturday and there is still some small soft looking substance floating around the dev.
Any ideas?

If I make a 1+1 solution with warmer water when I develop my first roll do you think it'll dissolve whatever this thing is?
>>
>>3092631
They announced the end of the 3 packs over a year ago anon. Shouldn't come as a surprise that they can't be found anymore.
>>

>>
>>3092667
are you retarded

>hey guys I bought a chemical mix that needs hot water to properly dissolve
>but I used cold water
>why didnt it work !?!?!? so confuse X(((((
>>
>>3092649
I have had four. The first one was flawless, but was stolen. One had a jammed shutter and the spring in the winder was worn out. One had an electrical problem, probably the cap. One is fine. They are generally built like tanks, but they are still old machines. Nothing lasts forever. Be sure to try it out first / get the squaretrade insurance, because there's no way to tell if it's been well-maintained or left in the rain or whatever.

I got a pretty good Minolta x-7a for $20. It's lacking the full auto feature of the x-700 and the power switch is in an inconvenient place, but it is also crazy cheap.
>>
>>3092667
>the water was not warm enough
why are americans like this? the bag fucking calls for 50° water why the fuck do you use anything else? what a retard. i hope you lose all your rolls.
>>
I haven't had much luck with infrared film lately. I got one of these* and it just isn't getting picked up by the film. I've tried both the ilford sfx infrared 100 and the rollei infrared 400.

That light can illuminate a dark room for my cheap point-and-shoot digital that I took the interested filter out of. Do I need a different kind of light for film, or is infrared film an inside joke?

* https://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Rechargeable-Camcorders-Digital-Cameras/dp/B004AA2Y9Q
>>
>>3092754
pretty sure youre underexposing it. light is too tame.
>>
>>3092756
How do you expose for light you can't see? Any tips?

The point and shoot says it's as bright as a room light, but it also won't tell me the ISO it's using because it was $5.
>>
>>3092758
do a test roll where you progressively let in more and more light. write down settings.
>>
recently got a ton of expired darkroom papers, what should I do with them? mostly FB, but I'm lazy and don't want to wash prints forever.
>>
>Local camera store apparently found a shit ton of like new Paterson Super System 4 tanks in the basement and are selling them for $20 each
Should I cop one? That's around the going rate for ones on eBay if not less.
>>
>>3092827
expose them on big neg cameras? i have seen some stunning stuff put on agfa brovira paper from the 30s.
>>
>>3092658
Easy. Kits are avalaible on ebay. Alternatively you can use foam from mousepads or this crafting stuff. Remove the old and sticky stuff with cleaning alcohol and a toothpick.

>>3092667
Only one way to find out if it works - it's likely to work, but also it might exhaust faster.
>>
>>3092832
Get a few.
4 roll tanks are good for getting a decent amount of 120 or 220 done.
I suggest taping your 120 film end to end, then loading from the centre of a paterson reel to maximise your dev-fficiency.
>>
>>3092704

For a specialized film like Natura 1600? I always found the 3 pack to be a bit much since I don't use the stuff much.

>>3092996
The price of a 3 pack was ¥2510, or ¥836/roll. The price of a single roll is ¥881. Not much difference thankfully. Fingers crossed they don't up the price.

Ok, stupid question time. If I purposedly overexpose film by one stop (shooting 400 film at 200 setting), do I have to tell the lab so they can compensate it during development?
>>
>>3093126
No.

Why are you overexposing film a stop if you don't even understand why you're doing it?
>>
>>3093128
Trying to get higher contrast and brighter colours out of 400 film.
>>
>>3093130
Doing what you're doing gives less contrast and more pastel-like colors. Shoot the film at 400.
>>
>>3092667
I too had this problem being a dumb ass
Take a bigger container you can fit the container you mixed d76 into.
Put it in the sink or the bathtub.
Run hot water all over the original container and into the smaller container.
When the 2nd container fills up, turn the flow of water down and let it sit and overflow if it's safe. Remember not to put water * into* the first as you'll wreck the dilution.

got a minolta 7s that seems to be in bretty good condition.

any tips or advice (about this exact camera or otherwise?)
>>
>>3093247
I don't have much to offer in way of advice since I'm a novice myself, but shooting with film on fully manual cameras really lets you appreciate what each setting does. It's a great way to learn.
>>
>>3093249
thanks, it certainly seems that way. ive ashamedly been using the A (auto) settings for shutter speed and aperture on this camera. I think I need a bit of a better grasp on those settings before I mess around with them
>>
>>3093253
you learn by using them

if you're gonna use auto settings you might as well shoot digital
>>
>>3092734

Do tabs that rip from a pack film camera really make that particular frame a dud? Is the white paper that sticks out from the spreaders too weak to pull through with a pair or tweezers?
>>
>>3093366
I used to shoot a lot of FP100c and I never had a ripped tab mess up my shots. It's just there so you can get a good grip for pulling the film out.
Try a pair of needle nose or lyman pliers if you can't grasp it with tweezers.

You have to be shitting me. That's the rewind release, not a mirror lock-up.

t. OM-2 & OM-4(reg & Ti) owner, phat-ass camera but the older one's meter is a disappointingly primitive frame average thing. Cool if you can get the appropriate TTL auto flash for 'em though, automatic bounce for indoor balance is really good for a camera that age.

My grandfather bought a Hasselblad Xpan about a year before his death in about 2000 (unexpected cancer). It's virtually mint condition and I didn't even know my dad had it until a few months ago.

Anyway; he's a bit of a stickler with his gear but I think I'll have no problem convincing him to lend it to me (he doesn't intend to sell it and he doesn't shoot film anymore at all). What I'm asking is if anyone has any experience with it? It seems to be quite the unique piece, so any advice is more than welcome.

Those are bigger and won't fit into the slot where it rolls out at. Some people suggest opening the camera in the dark to slide the photo out that way though it won't open all the way unless I use force (which may ruin the rest of the pictures if they fall out).
>>
>>3093436
These cameras are fucking awesome. Used one for a couple of rolls and loved it but unfortunately had to give it back. You get 21 pano exposures on a 36exp roll if I remember correctly

What lens is on the camera?
>>
>>3093444
Sounds promising. It's the 45mm one, by the way.

Gotta say though, f/4 seems quite the high minimum f-number. Reckon it might be worth it to get a flash for indoor shots?
>>
I'm kind of limited with my Zeiss Nettar and about to pull the trigger on a Kiev 60
Why no love for them compared to Kiev 88s?

I think the SLR style layout would be much easier to hold and use, plus there's way more lenses available. I'm thinking of getting the 80mm volna and the 65mm mir 38 for landscape and such. Any suggestions?
>>
>>3093447
It's got a smaller minimum f number because it the lens has a bigger image circle. That's why it's not uncommon to see large format lenses with a minimum aperture of f5.6 or f8 or even higher.

Could be worth getting a flash for, but it's probably not an ideal camera for shooting indoors anyway. It's far more suited to landscapes and whatnot, since the panoramic format lends itself more to that

You'll want to be shooting it around f/8-f/5.6 most of the time, that's the sweet spot. At f/5.6 there's a little bit of vignetting and at f/4 it is pretty noticeable. You can mitigate this by using a centre weighted ND filter that is available for the lens (although it increases your exposure time so in the end it's not that different from just stopping down).
>>
>>3093455
>>3093456
I'll definitely take this into consideration. Thanks for the tips, anons.

>f/4 sounds small

Everyone is used to reading f numbers for crop cameras with terrible sensors.

f/4 is more than sufficient for film/full frame.

sup folks
I can get a GW690 (III) for a pretty good price, and since I'm loving 120 and 6x7 so far the idea of having a much more compact camera than my GS-1 with an even wider field of view sounds pretty neat
anything that I have to know about that thing?

6x9 has the same aspect ratio as 35mm. It's also a rangefinder so make sure you know what you are getting. Also no meter. I guess everything I mentioned is pretty obvious but just keep it in mind. If you are getting it under 300$ I don't see why not get it.

Depends on where at the camera you want to replace the seals. The ones marked red can be replaced by wool (if there is a slit to stick the wool into), the green ones have to be replaced using some foam.

Supposedly the designer figured that his camera now has a smooth enough mirror mechanism that it doesn't need mirror lock up anymore -- at least in proportion to the shake caused by a cable release. Still, the OM-4 etc. prefire the mirror which is proper and correct.

And yeah, the Ti is bretty gud. Light and well balanced, and doesn't chew through the batteries like the worse version.

I'm doing a a japanese/American hybrid absurdist, erotic photo shoot soon, it'll be the first one I've done, all outside.

Any tips? I'll be shooting film, probably in the early morning hours while it's still completely dark and then when the suns coming up. I'm curious if it'd be possible to achieve an effect like this one in Onibaba which is a stunning display of cinematography with a low budget. What equipment aside from my camera and 50mm would I want for that effect? Also maybe some film Recs? I'll probably be using ilford 100-3200, fomapan 400 as well.

For the foam parts you can also use the felt of a film roll slit, works like a charm. Pry open an empty film roll canister and peel it off. Just neatly and precisely cut it to shape and glue it in place with a good contact glue. Of course, after you carefully removed all of the old foam and glue residue with alcohol.

So I just bought some Fuji 400 speed and on the back of the box it says it isn't suitable for zoom lenses. I just dropped off 3 rolls of 400 speed film to be developed, most of which I shot with a macro lens, will my pictures come out? Also why can't you use a zoom with 400 and lower iso?

It just says that because typically zoom lenses have small apertures and using them may result in slow shutter speeds and thus, camera shake.

Basically advice for bottom of the barrel, clueless photographers. Your photos will be fine if you stuck roughly to the 1/focal length rule for minimum shutter speed.

400x can be found un-expired, though late 2017 seems to be about the limit.

Not sure it is worth the ~$25 a 135 roll it runs for though.

Can't 100F be pushed to 400 pretty easily?

And yea, pretty excite about Kodachrome. Any idea when?
>>
>>3094240
Provia 100F can be pushed to 200, 400 is a bit iffy (super blocked up shadows).

Also, it's Ektachrome that's coming back. Kodachrome is long gone and never returning.

Yep, there were a number of 1600iso slide films and at least one 3200 (Konica GX3200 IIRC). In more recent times people found pushing Provia 400X to 1600 gave better results than some of the faster offerings.

The Ektachrome is supposed to go on sale in the 4th quarter of 2017 (or so says Kodak)

How can you put your camera on an enlarger lens ?
I'm curious to know, I might do the same.

What's the quality output of this ?
>>
>>3094781

Using a few adapters and a bellow device.

My setup is build like this, and might differ from others, depending on the camera, enlarger lens (m42 or m39) and bellows used. But basically it goes like this.

A6000 -> M42 to E-Mount Adapter -> bellow device with a short flange distance (important because im using a mirrorless camera, where flange distances are shorter than DSLR's) ->M42 to M39 Adapter -> M39 enlarger lens

Using a mask out of black paper for the negatives on the light table, is recommendet too.

I replied with a scan to my setup.
I currently only have negatives of portraits here, which i cant upload for obvious reasons, so these flowers should give you an idea of the results.

Kek, I'm the dslr scancuck and I'm currently using an lpl column in my scanning rig.
Your lense is fucking garbage though, and it shows, as does the grit and filth from that lightpad.
See how you have absolutely no fucking contrast? That's from using the most flaring light source possible, and an uncoated, trash-ready rodenon-meopta-domiplan-failtar lense. Get a six element, coated, 50/2.8 if you want to stick with an enlarger lense.
They are so cheap there's no excuse not to.
Also, make sure you've taped over the aperture numbers, because stray light will get in through those (although I doubt ur babbys-first-enlarger Failtar even has illuminated f/stops)
Then, mask off the entire surface of the light pad except for a 35mm-frame sized hole, then make sure your scanning room is dark. No need for "darkroom" dark, but definitely "why don't you have the light on, anon?" dark.
But pls, even with ur trash lense, just do that last bit and post an a/b comparo for us, and also thank me.
>>
>>3094848

Yes I know about those, aside from formula 1 I don't find most car events that interesting or unique. I appreciate it though, im sort of blogging to see others experience.

>>3094849

>>
>>3094851

I know that this lens isnt the best. I got it with my bellows for free. I didnt expected it to be such a crappy performer though.
Can you recommend me a better one? I heard the EL-Nikkors are nice.

The pic above was a quick (and dirty) scan i made for the anon that asked for an example.
Therefore i didnt waste time for removing dust.

Also, the image was taken in complete darkness and it probably lacks contrast, because the negatives were overexposed by one step.

I have no app. masking material here atm.

Can you provide an example of a perfect dslrcuckscan, cuck?

Nah, it's my only digital cam, and my film pics of it haven't been developed.
It's an enlarger column mounted on top of an old set of bedside drawers, or something like that.
A7 and canon fd 50/3.5 macro mounted on the column.
drawers gone, of course, painted flat white inside.
Front of drawers covered with a sheetmetal panel painted flat white.
two speedlights mounted inside the box.
Hole cut in top, hole covered with translucent plastic to diffuse.
glass pane to cover the hole.
tape laid on glass to guide the film.
cardboard mask to place over each frame as it's scanned.
flashes triggered/adjusted remotely by trigger mounted to camera hotshoe.

there's a lot of good pentax disassembly videos on youtube and there are schematics for all pentax cameras online. check them out. i was able to repair a busted camera quite easily.

if you dont wanna try fucking with it yourself or find it too complicated, send it to eric (pentaxs.com) he'll repair and CLA it for (what i consider) a reasonable price. i've had him replace a shrekt focusing screen, that's too advanced for me.

What are you using to keep thefilm still and to diffuse the light behind it?
>>
>>3094993
I bought a plastic white folder (for papers) and cut that little rectangle out of it. Superglued two magnets to the bottom spaced far enough apart for a 6x6 frame to fit between them. To hold the film flat I use two more magnets on the top to hold it down. Very simple, very ghetto. Get's the job done though. I can set up, scan a roll of 35mm, and disassemble in <15 minutes.

no underexposure causes grain and a lot of dull colors. Overexposure removes most of that grain and makes it look more "normal". Not at my PC atm, but pulled this shot from Google (Natura 1600 shot at 100 in daylight)

First actual roll developed, the Olympus camera I found at the back of a drawer was actually not busted, it was the roll staying there for 10 years what went bad (and came back from the lab mostly blank).

Some pics were out of focus or badly exposed but overall it was better than expected.

Also first lesson learnt: don't shoot Superia 400 in the shade with a compact that cannot be forced to overexpose.

Can anyone clear up a question I have about using Rodinal?
So I understand you dilute it to make a single-use film developer. Does that mean you're only supposed to use it once or can you use it to develop several films in a single session? (What about 120 film? you need twice as much developer to fill up the tank, but you have about as much film area as a roll of 35mm film..)

what? you should fill the tank to the same volume (i.e. fully) regardless of what's in it. rodinal gets diluted so much it's easily exhausted, reusing it would be unpredictable/risky.

>>

I wonder what are the main differences with a common flatbed
>>
>>3095447
The flextight keeps the film much flatter, it has better focus, a better sensor, and no glass between the film and the sensor itself.

That said, at the $20,000 price point you might as well just go all the way and get a proper drum scanner.
>>
>>3095444
obviously not. if i was paying attention i would have noticed there was no film.
>>
>>3095449
And what are the pros of using a drum scanner?
>>
>>3095477
Pros: Best possible image quality and resolution available.
Cons: Expensive and time consuming
>>
>>3095483
Is there a chance to get better quality scans (better than flatbeds) without spending 20k?
>>
>>3095488
it's 2017. dslr > flatbed
>>
>>3095449
You do know that in terms of image quality it's as good as a drum scanner since it's essentially a strange hybrid drum-scanner with a CCD camera?

>>3095488
Plustek, Reflecta, Braun dedicated scanners and the ancient Nikon's.
>>
>>3095502
It's closer to a flatbed than it is to a drum scanner. The original has to be wet mounted to achieve the best possible image quality.
>>
Friendly reminder that film scanning wank is silly in a world where the $200 flatbed will resolve grain in Delta 3200 at its "2400 dpi" setting, and often your seventies classic glass is already the weaker link. Also, with increasing resolution comes other annoying hi-fi shit, such as being absolutely perfectly anal about dust not just during the scanning process but during life in general.

Wetprint yo shit.

Will my film be okay if it was left in the car for the day in a compartment out of the sun?

It has been established that at least 3.5ml (other sources cite 5ml, mostly manufacturer) of rodinal must be present in a developing solution to develop all of the latent image activated grains of a single 36 exp roll of b/w 35mm film. If you develop at 1:100 dilution that means in a 350ml tank you'll only have around 3.5ml of rodinal. So after you dev your roll there will be zero developer left for any more rolls to get developed. That's the one shot nature of rodinal.

I kept a 1:50 used once solution in a bottle on a windowsill for 10 months and it still darkens film strips/works so the "one shot" thing is manufacturer "please use more of our stuff we sell" wankery, and while you're risking underdevelopment with a 1:50 solution you shouod safely develop 2-3 rolls one after the other in a 1:25 rodinal dilution. If you keep the working solution completely airtight and lightproofed it should even work after some time.

Push Tri-X/HP5 to 3200 and shoot with a flash and you'll get something like this, very high contrast and a lot of grain. Then add contrast in printing (or in lightroom if you're using a digital workflow)

Less than $300 would be ideal, and I only shoot b/w 35mm if that makes any difference. New or used, not a huge deal as long as it's functional and gives me decent results.
Whatcha guys got for me?

Friendly reminder you're a fucking moron.
Film has a window of spectral sensitivity, and will only react a certain amount to any given lux/seconds exposure within that range, even if you boil it in stock d76 for half an hour.
