Hey guys,

Just bought my first slr to learn photography on (canon ae-1) and am now thinking about doing an intro photography course at uni. I was wondering if there was a reason why so many of the portraits in photography seem to err on the side of nudes? It just seem kind of odd to me. Can't similar blocking/composition be achieved in clothed subjects?
>>
People tend to be fascinated with the nude form - especially male photogs with female subjects. But there's plenty of non-nude portraiture out there.
>>
women are fucking sexy dude

Yes but spotty faced students and sleazy old men like to think the object of their fascination is art rather than just fap fodder.

Artistic nudes can be pleasing but 98% of the time they are just crass. Whereas porn at least is honest about the reason for its existence.

yeah but it seems to be that in uni it's women professors and female students who are all for it. Seem like it's more a sexual liberation thing more than anything else. Just seem unnecessary to me in most cases - a way to draw attention to your art piece making seem more artsy with nudity.

bruh
>>
>>3092103
That is porn, and needs to have clothes put on it.
>>
>>3092103
Yeah but classical art has a much higher male:female ratio than modern photography.
>>
>>3092193
So women start taking pictures of women and it's suddenly unnecessary?

bruh
>>
>>3092203
I meant subjects.
>>
nude bodies are a good subject for light and form, making sure the clothes look good and stuff makes things complicated so unless you're a fashion photog most people just ditch it
>>
>>3092203
>So women start taking pictures of women and it's suddenly unnecessary?
They are just copying what the rich white men with cameras do
>>
>>3092203
All I meant is that I see why it could be interesting in and of itself but usually it just seems as semi-erotic and I think that can distract from the photograph as an art piece.

Again, I'm just starting photography so I was wondering if there were reasons such as >>3092243 , but If I'm shooting in b/w in intro classes why do so many feel the need to go for nudes? Does it really make that much of a difference?

It seems like a counter-culture meme from the 1960's to me.

The nude has been a subject of photography since photography was invented. More women are practicing photography because there are fewer financial and social barriers to them doing so.

Look at the work of Lee Miller and Imogen Cunningham.

Naked people been a subject of fascination since forever.

It's a relatively cheap and easy subject for photography courses (as compared to documenting the elaborate funeral rituals of the Tana Toraja) and slightly edgier than shooting the local lampost and the cat.
>>
>>3091843
Because most """"""photographers"""""" are insecure beta losers and they see photograhy as the only way to get near girls.
>>
Because the "film community" (what they call themselves mind you) are a bunch of unoriginal circle jerking walking clichés who "got into film" for "the cooler looking pictures" (and of course the thousands of followers they get). Go look at any film hashtag on Instagram, the top 9 are almost all filled with nudes or women.
