I'm a semi-experienced cinematographer that started on digital and want to learn more about film. Shooting motion on film is way outside my budget but I want to get a 35mm Camera and shoot photos with it.
What's /p/'s recommendation for something not too basic that's reasonably affordable but allows me to experience the process of using a microprism ring, turning the crank and developing photos etc?
I'm looking at the Minolta x700 (found one for $120AUD with a 50mm 1.7), but also interested in the Canon AE-1 as I have some FD lenses and some of my EF glass could potentially be adapted to it I think? Should I look at even older rangefinders?
I don't need a full pleb proof camera, I have a solid understanding of photography fundamentals and light.
Post some cool photos you shot on film I guess.

I have an AE-1 Program, and I highly recommend it.
Any big name 35mm cameras will be good though

my advice is be patient, keep shooting on digital and scour gumtree + op shops until you get a really nice deal on a camera
I wouldn't fork over $120 for that. remember, these ancient cameras are in closets all over Australia and are trading hands for peanuts all the time. why, just last week, a guy I know bought a working Nikon FG with a 50mm 1.8 from an op shop for $5. five fucking dollaridoos.
just hunt around until you find something, do a quick google search to find out about possible quirks while you check its physical condition, and if you're satisfied, buy it.
you could even ask around if anyone you know has got an old camera. spend the money you save on film, that's the expensive bit.
I'll sell you this Canon F-1 for $140 shipped. Works great and is way fucking better than an AE-1. Was Canon's top of the line camera, used by the Navy Seals and what not. Fully manual, can work without batteries (only the meter relies on battery power). 1/2000th top shutter speed. Built like a tank.
FWIW EF glass can't adapt to FD. Well, it COULD...but it'd be incredibly difficult due to the FD mount locking mechanism and I'm not aware of any adapters out there.

X-300 is 99% of the camera for 1/5 the price.
>>3090900
Back in the day, that was true. But with both of them under $100 now, you might as well grab the X-700 for the P mode.
If you have EF lenses just get an eos film body if you're married to the idea of having a 35mm camera or get an A-1 to use with your FD lenses
List all of what you've got already

Good advice. Thanks. I don't mind spending a little bit but hunting for a deal could be fun.
>>3090897
I can't seem to find much in the way of how much better it is. The AE-1 costs like $250 on eBay though. What are the advantages of the F-1? I like the sound of built like a tank though.
>>3090900
1/5 of $100 is pretty damn cheap, I'm not stingy enough to care about that price difference, but if I found one in an op shop I'd probably get it I guess.

I shoot video mostly so I have:
Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Art
Sigma 50 f1.4 Art
Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS II
And then FD lenses:
I have a 70-210 f4 with some mould in it and a 50 1.4 (New FD I think) lying around.
EOS film bodies seem gross, I'm sure the quality is fine but I like the compact and mechanical deal with one of these older cameras.

Also if I'm keen what's the normal process for going from anon to non-anon on here? Don't reaaaallly want to put my email address on 4chan. Maybe I'm being a pussy though.

Canon F1 is the camera I learned on and it is my backup camera now.
Keep in mind if you find a "New F1" there are more electronics = more potential problems.
Otherwise, they are very precisely made and accurate machines, just like the other pro SLRs at the time.
FD glass has gone up a bit in price due to people reading those articles about adapting it to Sony cameras, not to mention hipster tax in general. It's still possible to find deals of course.

I own a Minolta x700, canon ae-1 program, and Olympus infinity stylus.
The Minolta is elder god tier and the Olympus is amazing. Fuck Canon. Hipster shit.
Check Olympus OM-10
just scour thrift shops, Craigslist, and garage sales. you'll find people just trying to get rid of shit because they don't know what it's worth. I picked up a om-1 w/50 1.4 for $10. the deals are out there if you're patient.
shot on AE1, Agfa Vista 400

Why do you need P for?
You already have Auto shutter speed with the X-300 so essentially aperture priority mode which is easily changed on the lenses.
I've used an X-700 for years until it's caps died, then I just started using an x-300 I bought earlier for it's lens and it really is almost the same camera, hell the X-500/570 is better then the X-700 due to its viewfinder anyway.

The body is stronger and uses better materials, it has a faster max shutter speed, it has tons of accessories (you can change prisms for example), battery only needed for the meter (the ae-1 defaults to 1/60th shutter speed when there's no battery). In short, the AE-1 was the consumer camera, the F-1 was the top dog. The one I have is the original, mechanical F-1. I've attached my email if you're keen.

Whether you decide to buy my camera or not, DO NOT buy an AE-1 for $250. That's an absolutely absurd price.

I used to own this model (it broke, my bad). You can get them really cheap anywhere. If you don't like working with film there is no harm done if you throw it away and if you stick with it, you'll have a blast.... from the past.
Good camera, very cheap, good for your experiment. Commit to something better later on when you KNOW you will actually get into it
