Hey /p/. I'm having trouble loading 120 film onto paterson reels.
It keeps getting stuck at the ball-bearings and I have to play with it a bit and wind it forward tiny bits at a time or it'll get stuck completely. Once this has left scratches on the neg.

I bought new reels, same thing.
I cleaned them in hot water and with a new toothbrush, same thing.

The only thing I can think of is maybe when I'm loading them on inside the dark bag and my hands are sweaty that might be what's causing it.

I'm probably going to try blocking out all the light in my bathroom to try loading out in the open tomorrow.

But if you have any ideas it'd be very helpful, thanks

I am looking to upgrade from my shitty point-and-shoot.

Somebody suggested a Canon T3i Rebel. I found a used one on B&H for $280. The used condition has an "8+". Is this a good deal? Is there a better camera I could get for the price?

Here's a link to the camera

Hello /p/,

I currently use an Olympus EP-1 but need to upgrade to something that can shoot 1080 video. Looking for something cheap around £250-£300 used, not married to the m4/3 format. Looking for:
>1080i50 and 1080p30 video recording
>fold out or flip up screen
>external mic input
>hot shoe mount
>1080p24 is a plus

I'm currently thinking of either getting an a5000 or GH2 and video hacking it, any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

In Nipponese, i is always an EE sound

It's "Nee-kon". Only you Americans say it like "Ny-kon".

>>3072317
no because it's two pp so the "ee" sound is cut off. There's something like a very short pause before you say the "ppon" part

Hi /p/
Can you recommend me an entry-level body+lens for landscape photography? Preferably something i can capture pictures of the night sky aswell. Thanks in advance!
>>
>>3072351
Rokinon has a superb APS-C mirrorless lens at 12mm F2.

Combine it with a good 24MP APS-C body like A6000 or some Fujifilm body and you're good to go.
>>
>>3072356
Thanks, appreciate it
>>
>>3072356

I equally use my 70-200, my 16-45 and 14mm for landscape. Your suggestion only shows you never, ever took a single landscape shot.

>>3072351
Any entry level camera, DSLR or MILC will do with the kit zoom lens and a tripod and set of a 2 and 3 stop ND, a grad and CPL filters.
I would avoid Sony because the kit lens is shit and the decent lenses are hella expensive. Something like a Nikon D3300, Canon 700D or Pentax K-70 will do nicely with the kit lenses.

So my trusty folder developed holes in its bellows. (Found out about that about shooting 7 films on vacation)

Any suggestions for an affordable lightweight medium format rangefinder I could replace it with? The selection of folding cameras I found online seem kinda limited and the prices are pretty ridiculous considering there's no guarantee how well they actually work.

Affordable MF rangefinders made in the past 40 years are not really a thing. Unfortunately, I don't know much about older folders, but maybe you could patch your bellows? Lots of info on the web about doing that.
>>
>>3072375
>implying you don't use lenses at f/8 or more with landscapes
>implying f/2.8 is significantly brighter than f/3.5 or even f/4
A good sturdy tripod and a reasonable exposure time at ISO 800 is what you need for starscapes with a separate exposure for the foreground. Filters are for daylight landscapes. Also astrotracer or a vixen polarie expands your exposure time considerably, just google it.
>>
>>3072380
>I don't know much about older folders, but maybe you could patch your bellows? Lots of info on the web about doing that.
Yeah, that's another optoin I guess. Apparently you can fix pinholes with a spot of black acrylic paint, but from what I've read this is at best a temporary fix. The only proper way to fix it would be to replace the bellows, and that's probably more expensive than the camera's worth.
>>
>>3072384
Sounds like you are making it a lot more complicated than "entry-level".

I agree that tripod is a must, but the rest is a lot of extra cost to work around a cheap F2 Rokinon lens.
>>
>>3072391
That UWA is more limiting in 80% of the cases and you can do a panorama with the kit lens at 20mm f/8 or just use it at 18mm for astro. UWA even in astro starscapes is a niche, the focal range provided by the kit zoom is more important for a beginner than an arbitrary FL prime. It is you who suggested a bad option for a beginner.
>>
Looking at buying a DSLR on the cheap, is there any reason not to get a Canon EOS 400D in terms of value/price ratio?
>>
>>3072403
*28mm
Sorry about the typo, 20mm has too much edge distortions for a panorama.
>>
>>3072404
Get a 550D instead. Just as cheap and basically the same as new entry canons
>>
>>3072407
Cheers for the advice- On ebay I can pick up a 400D + all kit needed for about £120, and the lowest I can see for the 550D is about £210 so I'm not sure I can justify the difference though.
>>
>>3072403
There is a lot of wrong opinions in this post. That 14mm you have is probably the most widely recommended night lens out there.
>>
>>3072412
>That 14mm you have is probably the most widely recommended night lens
Yes, for people who know what they are doing. Not for a beginner as an only starter lens. Kindly fuck off.
>>
>>3072418
>UWA even in astro starscapes is a niche
>Yes, everybody & myself have that lens
Pick one. Your opinions are flying into all directions.

You don't have to know what you're doing to operate a prime lens by the way. It's a straight forward as it can get. And since you're so out of touch, I can reveal to you most new people prefer the wide end, and work their way up to the longer lenses.
>>
>>3072423
You just want to sell that lens, that is obvious.
>>
>>3072424
No it's just simple logic that beginners use wide because they don't know how to compose the frame.

And that lens is simply the cheapest, highest quality, brightest aperture, for the money.
>>
>>3072425
Simple logic? Of whom?
It is the worst idea to tell a beginner to use a single focal length. It is understandable with normal or ~35mm FF equivalent focal length because those are the most useful for many kind of subjects, where an UWA can only be used for one kind of subject. You are limiting a beginner with this and can only manage to scare him/her away from photography, Kit lenses exist and usually bundled for a very good reason, they cover most of the useful focal range so the beginner can decide on the next lens.
It's like you want to give bad advice and even defending it. This is nothing but malicious intent, not a sign of good will.
>>
>>3072429
You don't scare people by giving them what they want -> Wide and bright.

Wide is how they will use that kit lens, so they might as well get the best quality wide lens.
>>
>>3072432
Your point is moot, anon did not asked for a specific lens that is wide and bright.
He asked fo a beginner camera to take landscapes and starscapes with. Learn to read, pajeet!
>>
>>3072434
Camera is irrelevant. It's all in the lens. And that lens is the best beginner lens until they learn to compose and move up to longer lenses.
>>
anyone else with experience with the Canon FTb?
>>
>>3072366
>Nikon D3300, Canon 700D or Pentax K-70 will do nicely with the kit lenses.
Why are you recommending lenses that don't have DoF scale to a newbie? Isn't it one of the most important aspects to learn how DoF works with the aperture?

>>3072447
Pentex, but the same shit. Sigma 17-50/2.8, I shoot whatever I see, landscapes/cityscapes, street, portraits mainly. I thought about going for a prime but I just find it too limiting. Maybe if I were only using a small part of my zoom lens, but I use both end and the wide-middle, so I'm keeping my zoom lens.
>>
>>3072447
I have a 5D Mark IV and a 7D Mark II but I love using the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM III on the latter. It's such a good combo for low-light and action photography. Though, obviously, it more suited for full frame.

Fuji is hard to work with. Nothing supports their raws properly, and their .jpegs have false color issues.

Their raws are fine one you convert them, but the only app that does it is OSX only.

I'd say wait a few months. Sony should be announcing an updated a7 soon.
>>
>>3072536
Man that really sucks about Fuji. I appreciate the experimentation with x-trans in a pack of bayer but it seems like a dead end. Their bodies seem very nice and fun to shoot. I don't know, I think I'd rather have something I'd have fun shooting. I don't know.
>>
>>3072540

Some people swear by the Fuji jpegs, even with the x-trans issues.

I have shot both the x-t2 and the a7ii and found them both to be enjoyable (though god damn the fuji kit was terrible), but everyone is different.

Go to a camera store, bring an SD card and give both a try. Make sure to take a few minutes to customize menus and settings too.

There's nothing fun about silkypix or iridient developer, the only software that works with fuji files properly.

And personally, I think sony have a more fun platform as there's a much wider choice of lenses and autofocus adapters work great. Adapting lenses on Fuji isn't as good as it's only a crop sensor, so you end up with weird fl lenses that look soft because you're only using 1/3 of the glass.

Most backpacks has horizontal arrangement compartment, only some has the vertical arrangement you need.

They will work on a bright sunny day, but otherwise they wont focus for shit.
>>
>>3072813
All Pentax DSLRs since the K-5IIs and K-3 has no AA filter, also K-S2, K-70, K-3II, K-1, KP.
You might want to look up the HD DA 21mm Limited prime if you want the excellent image like in the GR. Not fully 28mm equivalent, but close enough.
Keep the 18-50 kit lens as well for weather sealed option.
>>
>>3072868
Honestly bright sunny days are what I'd be using it for mostly. For indoor or less than ideal light I will probably be using something else. I plan on getting something with more reach and they seem to be the affordable option vs canon lenses and a good metabones. Was just wondering if they're worth the money or if I should keep looking/wait until I change over.
>>
>>3072867
>Right? Or nah?
The way things are developing, it's the Sony bodies that will break more and more barriers, while the Canon bodies goes to stand still.

Neither Sony nor Canon are taking APS-C seriously though. They are FF companies.
>>
>>3072875
If you want reach in good lighting, why not get an entry-mid range DSLR with a 300mm prime or zoom lens? Plenty of budget options, some even works with a 1.4x TC.
>>
>>3072875

Even so you'd be better off with a native body.

If you have the a6000 you don't even need to shell out for the MC-11, a cheaper one would work.
>>
Pentax 645 (original one) any good?
>>
>>3072882
yes, 67 is better tho
>>
>>3072882
Yep, 645n and the improved iterations are very fun to shoot. Motor drive, cartridge for the 120 film, it's a joy to use compared to the bigger 67 bodies.

The 500aw says it fits up with 500mm with body. Are you sure 600mm will make it in fine with body?
>>
>>3072919
500 is the focal length, not the physical size. The 150-600 is not much bigger than the 150-500.
My 50-500 fits in with a standard zoom on the body on top, the standard zoom lens size is roughly the size difference between the 50-500 and 150-500.
The 500 AW will surely fit your 150-600 with the body attached.
>>
>>3072387
Tape and glue fixes are fine for smaller holes, but if you have big tears then you'll have to replace the bellows. Also, I'd think that replacement bellows for Adox might be pretty hard to come by but if you find one, the replacement procedure isn't that hard to do. I'd fix the original bellows with tape, shoot a roll and then decide what to do.

These "dramatic" colors, for lack of a better word, on top of sharpness and the separation, is it achieved solely through the lens or is post process playing a heavy part?

I'm trying to figure out how people achieve a certain look on portraits
>>
>>3073480
There's a variety there.

There's seperation via bokeh in some, whilst others get their impact and pop from lighting (top right)

Post processing is pretty heavy on all of those shots, but a decent lens and full frame body will also help you get the look you want.
>>
>>3073481

Gotcha. Most of the shots on Pursuit of Portraits seem to be quite heavy with post, which may explain why they have that look, although the sharpness on some shots makes me believe it could be solely the lens.

I haven't done much portraits since upgrading to a full frame body, but I'm not sure I may get such an impacting portrait with a 50mm 1.4 - would it be safe to say these may have been taken with an 85mm or greater focal length?
>>
>>3073225

Yes, of course.

Some advice though: Get the regular high density foam and not the "pick n pluck" stuff... it won't look as pretty once you've carved into it, but it's going to hold up better over time.

I use 3 Pelican cases on my boat... one for my camera gear, one for my wife's, and one for our camping gear.

The boat is foamed in so is neutrally buoyant if swamped, but with the largest Pelican case lashed down, it will actually keep it and the outboard above the waterline.

They are ugly and overpriced, but built to last.

Posted this in the dead QTDDTOT thread but repost.

Just to be sure, can I mount my MC/MD lenses on Canon FD cameras? From what I've read they were around the same period and from when Minolta and Canon worked together.

Any clarification would be helpful.

I have a basic canon ae-1 from my brother I've been using for a few days now.

I work at a homeless shelter and mostly i'm going to be shooting homeless people in the next few months.

I have a basic lens but any I should go for in particular for close up shots, sort of like bergman (the director)

I imagine it'd be somewhat similar to Anders Petersen with cafe lehmitz.

I think bergman is one of the best especially for direct psychological representations of humanity on film. I like film much more then photography but I want to see what can be done with a camera.

I may have that right now, I figured it was stock. It says on the inside of the camera lens CANON LENS FD 50 MM 1:18 S.C.

>>
>>3073907

The a6000 is slow to begin with, so it isn't fair to assume the a6300 would be as slow.

The 55mm Zeiss is a fantastic lens. One of the best ~50mm lenses ever made. It focuses pretty fast on the a7rii and a7ii, so I assume it is as good if not faster on the a6300.

'Indoor sportsy thing' are the hardest thing to shoot for any camera. As far as mirrorless goes though, you wont get better performance than the a6300/55mm unless you go a9.

Nikon's 105s are considered their best, and the 200mm is ever so slowly starting to show its age. The 55s and 60s are document copy lenses, and are sharp but with a short working distance in the macro range. The 55 and 60 aren't as good at infinity as the 105. There's also the 70-180, which is a bit oddball but it's a zoom.

How the fuck do you choose a camera?

I'm looking into buying an entry level DSLR, and there's so much shit around it's impossible to choose.

Like, I'm not even asking for specific recommendations, but how do you even go around narrowing your options in a smart way?
>>
>>3074630
You're a newbie, right?

You look at sony mirrorless, why?
Because they use an evf, which will give you an exact preview of your shot as you change settings, so you can learn the exposure triangle exponentially faster and get the shots you want straight away. Ovf, as found on a dslr is just a fancy window, and you need to use your education and experience to get the right settings for your shot, also the viewfinder will be much smaller and not be able to magnify an area so you nail focus or have focus peaking.

Sony mirrorless also let you cheaply adapt any lens from any camera on to it, meaning you can use high quality prime lenses from yesteryear to get great quality photos without breaking the bank. A dslr can't do this due to it's much longer flange distance.

A second hand sony a7 is a fantastic and affordable full frame option, the only area it really lacks is autofocus performance and battery life (about 400 shots per battery).

To narrow down your options

Full frame or crop? (Full frame has less noise at high iso, more bokeh and gives sharper photos, but is more expensive)

Is autofocus performance critical? the a7ii, a6300, a6500, a7sii and a7rii all have MUCH better af performance, especially if you want to use an af adapter for canon lenses.

How much do you want to spend?
The a6000 can be had for under $400, the a9 is over $4000.
>>
>>3074630
First you see how much budget you have, then see what are the available models in your range. Like Nikon D3300, Canon 1300D, 760D, Pentax K-S2, K-70 etc...
You compare specs, read reviews to figure out what specs mean what and do you actually need it.
Then you can narrow down on one or two models, then you choose.
With entry models you cannot go wrong either way, all of them do the same and has the same performance. Some have extra features or specs you might want to expand on, like pentaprism instead of pentamirror viewfinder, weather sealing, ability to use old AF lenses or even manual lenses with complete metering.
The kit lens will be good for you for quite awhile so don't worry on extra lenses at the start, maybe get the two lens bundles with the telezoom kit lens as well. Stay away from the superzoom lens bundles, those lenses are nasty (18-200mm or above). Exception is the Pentax 18-135 that is decent from 20-100mm. The new 18-50 is still better.
When you got the camera and kit lens then you stop thinking about brand stuff and go out shooting. Read Understanding Exposure from Bryan Peterson, put the camera into aperture or shutter priority and shoot away. Your first 10,000 shots will be the worst so don't worry about it. Practice, practice then practice some more.

I'll be moving to Japan in about a month. Would I benefit at all by getting my first camera somewhere in Tokyo? I've heard they have electronics stores with pretty cheap cameras
>>
>>3074669
Most of those stores don't serve gaijins. Look for one of the few bigger ones that state they do serve your western devil ass.
>>
>>3074669
No, camera tech has barely budged in the last 5 years due to the kumamoto earthquake, the west have a more consumerist mindset so you get better prices 2nd hand here.

New prices literally come down to tax rates between countries.
>>
>>3074669

Nah, not really. You are more likely to find something heavily discounted in the States.

It used to be worth going to Japan when the exchange rate was different, but now it fluctuates around 1:1 so it doesn't really work.

I'd recommend a Sony a6000 or Nikon d3400. They can be had in nice little combos from $400-700. They use the same sensor and have roughly the same performance, so it pretty much comes down to your preference between dslr and mirrorless.
>>
>>3074652
Definitely leaning toward the a6000 since it's cheap and its autofocus seems to do the job.Would I buy the second hand body only and get a lens separately?
>>
>>3074652
>>3074655
Looking at local prices(kinda hard to convert directly into dollars), Sony a6000 is something I could comfortably afford new, but I could do $200 more if there was something that made sense. Stuff like a7 is out of my budget, I could at best buy a used body and that would stretch my budget to the limit.

One concern I have is I'd like something that would, if I decided to, allow me to upgrade incrementally - like buying some new lenses for my budget camera and then getting a better camera that can use them. But I don't know if that's something that makes sense.
>>
>>3074676
> like buying some new lenses for my budget camera and then getting a better camera that can use them.

That is the ideal way to do it. The phrase is 'marry the lens, date the body'. Lenses last decades (I use some older than I am), but a body will be outdated in 5 years or so.
>>
>>3074652
>>3074674
Oh, I should mention that I'll mostly be dicking around Japan taking pictures on the go, so point and shoot would be preferable, right?

>>3074673
I'll try and get one before I leave then, thanks. I'll look more into dslr vs. mirrorless as well.
>>
>>3074680
The sony a6000 would be smaller than some dslr options, if you're going yo be moving around a lot it might come in handy. If you're interested in learning how exposure works you can be just as fast as a point and shoot, and you would be happier in the long run if you continued with photography as a hobby etc
>>
>>3074674
See what comes up.
The signa dn range are fantastic little lenses for very little money and come in 3 useful focal lengths. The sony kit lens, whilst not the best image quality ever is very compact and versatile.

>>3074676
Sony does let you upgrade incrementally, starting at the bottom you have the a5xxx and a6000 bodies, at the next level you have either a very basic full frame body or a better featured crop body in the a7 and a6300, then we go semi pro with the a6500 and a7ii adding super fast af and ibis (image stabilization), then we get to the niche professional products with the a7sii, a7rii and a9.

Lenses, again, something for every budget.
Cheap;
Sigma dn range, kit lens, any old manual focus stuff with a dumb adapter

Enthusiast;
Sigma mc11/metabones adapter and canon mount lenses, sony 28, 50, 55 and 85mm lenses, samyang/rokinon lenses.

Pro;
Sony gm zooms, zeiss batis, fancy adapted stuff.

Bear in mind, bodies will drop value incredibly fast, lenses may hold their price indefinitely.

Is there any decent kit lens upgrade for the Sony A6000? I'm looking at getting the Tamron Canon mount 28-75 f/2.8 but it's a full frame lens so I won't have as much coverage on the lower end. The Sigma Canon mount 17-50 f/2.8 looks pretty neat too, but will I run into any problems with adapting this to an A6000?
>>
>>3074740

you deserve what you get for falling for the a6000 meme. we tried to warn you fools i don't know how many times.
>>
>>3074744
Yeah, poor me for falling for the best value camera for less than $1000 meme.
>>
>>3074740
you won't have any problems adapting that lens with a good adapter (sigma mc11 or metabones) but will have piss poor af performance on one of the cheaper commlite/villtrox models.

a6300 does work better with adapted canon lenses, but the af is still very usable on the 6000.
>>
>>3074748

Enjoy all of your quality sub-$1000 lenses. ;)

So I have bought a Sunpak flash with bracket and sync cable. I want to try something new for my nightlife photography.

Problem is, the 6D has no pc sync port. I also need auto focus.

So I was thinking of a solution but I have no idea if this is possible, was hoping you guys might know.

A hotshoe adapter with sync port which can fire both of the hotshoe on the adapter and the sync port. Thus...

Camera > hotshoe adapter > af light assist on the hotshoe of the adapter and my external flash in the sync port.

Would it fire both?
>>
>>3074751
Thanks, I do enjoy being able to adapt pretty much any Canon lens I want ;)

Anyone have recommendations for a cheap pocketable camera with passable image quality?

Define cheap, something like the Sony RX100 will give you great shots with manual controls for less than 500 bucks

A 2 or 3 gen old entry DSLR with kit lens would cost even less and give all the controls.

I use a bag and have a car to put that bag inside.
If not in the bag, I just carry the camera in hand or on a strap like every other normal person.

I'm looking for some specific camera criteria without destroying the bank. Sort of a film question, but /tv/ is a fucking nightmare.

I love the flat image that something like a Canon with Cinestyle obtains. But I can't find any cameras that shoot 4k with a flat image. (Other than something like a Black Magic, but fuck BlackMagic).

Any recommendations?
>>
>>3074824
Try Lumix G7 or G80/85, I don't know if the G7 has 4k, but the G80/85 has.

Why are you asking gear questions when you apparently don't need an answer?

Torn between a 85/1.4 and a 70-200/2.8 for my next purchase. Would be used mostly for portraiture. Used on FF, currently I own a 50/1.7, 100/2.8, 135/2.8, 200/4.

Advice?
>>
>>3074831

I answered you a while ago. There are no good kit upgrades.
>>
>>3074836
Get the 70-200/2.8, get rid of the 200/4, 100/2.8 and 135/2.8 and get the 85/1.4.
>>
>>3074836
Why do you need the 70-200 if you already have a 100, 135 and 200? More convenient to just have one lens, sure, but it seems a bit redundant.
>>
>>3074844
I typically don't carry all three, generally 28, 50, and one of the last three. They are also manual, which isn't usually an issue, but an autofocus option would be nice.

On the other hand, I think I might be able to get away with the 85, and it seems to be the go to portrait lens.
>>
>>3074846
You can also use a 90 or 105mm macro lens for portraits as well, at least my Tamron 90/2.8 performs well for portraits.

Is 350$ for a 60D with a 30k shutter count plus a 50mm f/1.8 a good price?

Yes.
With that price you can also afford an EF-S 24mm that you should buy right away.

well I'd sell it immediately. I'm just looking on eBay and local craigslist and bodies alone go for 350-400
>>
>>3074897

>>
>>3074916
just curious about it, I have a d3200 right now but I really like my little XA rangefinder and want a digital one. Is it compact/sturdy enough to kinda throw into a bag?
>>
>>3074936
I don't own an X100, but the Ricoh GR meets this description. There's no OVF, of course but it's XA-sized.
>>
>>3074938
What do you think of the autofocus on it? And also how is the manual focus? Those were my concerns looking at it.
>>
>>3074946
The manual focus is not something you'd use to focus carefully, but then that sensor/lens combo will always get you a lot of depth of field. It's more for hyperfocal shooting at fixed distances, or zone focusing.

The AF isn't like PDAF, but it's mostly fine and unnoticeable. It's a little more deliberate in low light, and it can get fooled if you're trying to focus on something center-frame that's backlit.

So is Sony a6000 okay or is it a meme camera?

If I decided to buy it as a first serious camera would it be better to just get the kit lens or buy the body only and get something else instead?
>>
>>3074959
It's fine. The only thing that would put me off is the lack of a front control dial.

What are you going to use it for? If you don't have a specific subject/style in mind, the kit lens is probably fine until you figure out what you want to do. You could also get the 35/1.8.

What even is a meme camera, anyway
>>
>>3074959

it's a meme camera my man. Pentax outshoots it dollar for dollar, Nikon has a better kit lens and beginner body, Canon has the best system as far as lenses and accessories are concerned.
>>
>>3074970
So, use a mirrorless if you want to use a mirrorless. This is just DSLR cheerleading.
>>
>>3074959

It is a pretty solid choice. Good sensor, decent control layout, lots of available lenses.

Main complaint is the kit lens, because it is built more for compact size than image quality. But even so, it is worth having for travel/every-day-use because it is so damn small and flexible.
>>
I want to use old lenses on my mirrorless (mft). Is there any big difference in "dumb" adapters or should i just buy the cheapest one?
>>
>>3075022
Real cheap ones are gonna fuck up the quality, although you don't need anything ridiculous. Shoot for middle-ground.

Filmfag here. BlackMagic Production 4K Camera, or the BlackMagic Ursa Mini?
>>
>>3075022
Most of the cheap ones will be about the same quality, but some will be more usable than others. Most of what's out there is fine for at least casual use. Don't expect good QA, because you might encounter stuff like the focal plane not being even across the frame.

The moderately priced ones ($60+) and especially the expensive ones ($150+) will show a noticeable jump in build quality, and will have tolerances that are correct, so that infinity focus is accurate.
>>
So how much does the Sony 18-55 kit lens suck? I got the NEX 3 as a temporary camera because I'm poor as shit and had to sell my old DSLR gear, but is there any point in getting a new lens until I can get something like the A6000?
>>
>>3074979

If any of those guys made a serious mirrorless the a6000 would still be the worst choice.
>>
Yi 4k, yi 4k+, or hero 5 black? Will be using in or around water fairly often.
>>
>>3074936

It's extremely sturdy. It's built like an old film camera. All metal, heavier than you would expect for the size. No plastic anywhere.
>>
>>3074962
>You could also get the 35/1.8.
Shit, that's almost the price of the body. I think I'll go with the kit lens for now.

Also, would it be worth buying a beat up a6300 instead of an a6000 if I find one that fits my budget?
>>
>>3075058
Also, related question - how many shots is too much when buying used? There's a used a6000 for 2/3 of the price of a new one I could get right now, but with 11k shots.

anon's who went from crop to fool fram, what was your upgrade path? Did you think it was worth it? Would you recommend it?

pic relate, thinking of selling my a6300 to go sony full frame with my canon glass
>>
>>3075070
Went from 35mm film to APS-C digital with some 6x6 film to a borrowed 5D to a NEX-7 to an a7II.

Full frame is totally worth it for me, because I like how FF primes behave at wider apertures, and it was never the same when I was dealing with crop factor, even at equivalent focal lengths. I shoot mainly 50mm with some 35mm and rarely 85/105.
>>
>>3075070

D300 to D800. It was pretty tight, not really as game-changing as I was hoping once I saw what a good aps-c sensor can do these days. It did increase my shallow lame-as-fuck bokeh whoring by roughly 1000%. It did not improve my photography in any way.
>>
>>3075090
>>3075092

The depth of field bonus, lack of crop factor and ISO performance really sell me because I really like astro photography and use a 35mm f2.

Just wondering if all that is worth ~$1400 -1600 after I sell my 6300
>>
>>3075070
>Did you think it was worth it?
No.
In the vast majority of cases you'll be stopping down to increase depth of field, or with a long lens.
In both cases you might as well be shooting crop.

>Would you recommend it?
Sure, for a laugh.
>>
>>3075093
>and use a 35mm f2.

So just upgrade to a 24 f/1.4 for the same effect?
>>
>>3075070

>what was your upgrade path?

D200 to D810

>Did you think it was worth it?

Definitely. The amount of dynamic range and detail I can see with full frame makes me feel like I'm learning about photography all over again. It's a massive improvement, obviously depending on how big of a jump you're making.

>Would you recommend it?

Only if your crop frame body is getting outdated and it's not able to deliver the results you want/need.
>>
>>3075102

Nothing you mentioned is specific to full frame though.
>>
>>3075099
That's something I thought about, the sigma 20 1.4 is $800 odd, but I'd like to get more mileage out of my 35 f2 (and other lenses) because it plays much better on full frame, and I've been buying full frame glass all this time because I wanted to upgrade at some point.

IBIS is also interesting to me because i've wanted an 85 1.8 but was sad it never came with IS.
>>
>>3075070
I sold my ff Sony/Gmaster gear to buy a Pentax k3ii plus a 18-50 sigma f2.8 and da star 50-135 2.8.

Fast primes are a meme. I get great bokeh, can shoot everything I need to, don't miss focus because memetier subject isolation like from 50-85 1.4, had enough money left over to buy a Fuji x70 and Olympus ep5 just to play with for fun and 1k cash to put back in the bank.

I really love the Fuji and wish they would have made a dslr like the Nikon DF.
>>
I need a Sony e-mount telephoto. The 55-200 is shit. Should I grab the SEL70300G or is there a comparable but less expensive option?
>>
>>3075058
The 6300 is a much better choice if you plan on adapting af lenses to it.

And don't worry too much about shutter count, it's unlikely to die under 100k.

>>3075070
Pentax k3 > sony a7> sony a7ii
Totally worth it for each upgrade, don't get one of the first gen if you want to use your canon glass.

>>3075154
Sigma canon adapter and one of the sigma super tele zooms, presuming you use an a6300/a7ii or better.
