its because white is represented in color negative as a pigment. while white and everything clear or bright is represented in slide film as transparency. so, when you see, say, a glowing source of light like a fluorescent tube, youre actually seeing the light of the scanner comming through a hole in the emulsion, since its a very bright light source, it tends to leak, and that translates into a highlight glow.

that short story "for sale: baby shoes, never worn" can teach a lot of how to make a picture tell a story in a succint way, because it reads as one reads a photo, on a flick, so it should be as striking and as precise and focused, it doesnt need to be bombastic or feature people crying to have an emotional effect in the reader/viewer. thats when, of course, you want to tell things or maybe compose poetically, some people do that naturally, some others just want to depict nice colors and shapes.

I get the feeling that it is pretty undiscovered in the sense that everybody wanks over the T2/Ricoh Gr but the Natura S is hardly ever mentioned.

I'll have a better answer for you when I develop my second roll through the camera. From what I can tell from the 10 frames I shot and developed so far, it's a pretty awesome little camera. Same size as a T4. Build quality isn't that great and it's not the quietist thing. But considering they are what, half the price of a T2/GR it's hard to go wrong. Plus, the NP mode seems to work pretty rad. I have a roll of slide loaded in it now so we'll see how it handles that.
I scan using an A7 and smartphone as a backlight. My 35mm scans aren't too great as I can only get 1:2 magnification. Just gotta buy the extension tube designed for the Canon FD macro lens I have to get 1:1.

This one is a bit different than the rest. I like the subject and the exposure, but I felt the foreground was distracting and it doesn't compliment the background as much, I think a better composition could have been achieved if you tried for a horizon shot, but regardless it's still one of my favs because you captured a lot of irony and that is way more difficult.

you have to understand what you are shooting, what is your primary subject and how does that interact with the enviornment. For example, the taxi driver smoking out of the car with the no smoking sign. that's real life irony, you successfully translated that into a photograph. Or the shadow at the trainstation, you took the subject, which is the projection of shadow onto a 3 dimensional material.
Both those examples, you showed interaction, and that's basically story telling. Many of your other photos lacked the precise aperature that best identified a subject or left fore ground in focus that competes for subject matter.

Awesome analysis on the interaction in those two photos. I can see that I've been shooting a lot of these with only 2 out of the 3 'players' in mind (typically the subject and the scene they are in) while forgetting to take the 3rd (the viewer) into consideration. I'll keep that in mind from now on!
I disagree about the use of shallow depth of field though. I find the interaction between subject and the background to be important most of the time and don't strive to create a hierarchy within a photo. The context is just as important as the 'subject'. I typically stop down on purpose to maintain that balance and other than that taxi driver photo, don't really see where a shallow DOF would have helped. Feel free to quote example shots you think could benefit from a shallow DOF though!
Also, fwiw all of the 35mm were shot on fully automatic cameras. No ability to adjust anything beyond flash modes.

the thing is, context can still be achieved by having a shallow depth of field. I do not mean 'interaction' as what is in focus, i meant it more metaphorically. what is your subject? what story are you trying to tell? how does the existance of a subject affect the enviornment and ultimately, depending on the intimacy of that interaction (or the geometry of your photograph) is how you decide the right aperature.
But honestly, you don't need my advice or anyone's here. You already figured out your style and what works for you. Just have fun shooting, don't worry about how it looks.

a 50mm lens at f1.9 has a really shallow depth of field which is why the picture quality isn't so sharp. Camera shake looks differently, the white light in the back has no motion blur, it's just that your range of focus in probably a little over a couple feet. There are a few ways to do it: show people in an interaction with an object/ another person in a way that you don't see it everyday. Just talking isn't enough there should be something interesting going on.
Have a subject that had impact from people and capture that in the best way possible, like pic related (not my picture, from someone on this board)
A picture of unusual people. If you take a photo of ordinary people they can be anyone, but if you take a picture from maybe idk a heavy metal fan, you can make up a story because it says something about their charachter.
Have a strong expression. That is a story in itself
Connection between two subjects or the subject and the background. Something like a contrast. Poor and rich, happy and sad. Or an old man in a old building.

About a month ago I bought 10 rolls of Fuji Trebi 100C. Not much info at all about it, but from what I've read it was a consumer Provia. I shot my test roll at 50iso thinking it was most likely stored improperly (a common theme with buying expired film here). Turns out the rolls are perfect, which resulted in me overcooking the roll and hardly having any shots worth scanning. Here's one that turned out. Think I adjusted the ISO back to 100 for this portion of the roll. It's too bad they stopped making this stuff. I'd shoot it over Provia any day.

No problem, I get asked this a lot.
The short answer is that my A7 is no longer a digital camera. I removed the sensor and the back screen, and replaced the back of the camera with a 35mm back removed from a Vintage Holda 135.
It's a little finnicky at times but, since I was able to leave the card door intact, I'm able to use my SD cards to record exif and merge the files in post.

You seem to shoot a shitload of slide film: what's the best way to shoot some Ektachrome 100 that expired in 2004?
I've shot the first roll at 100iso/50iso alternating, but I think 1 stop overexposure might be a bit much for slide film. Shot the second roll mostly at box speed.
Interested to hear what you think I should have done. I'm going to hopefully source a lot more of this film if I like what I get from these two rolls

I think you shot the first roll right. If I were you, I probably would have bracketed at 50, 64/80, and 100. But doing 50 and 100 works too. If the film was stored in the fridge/freezer the whole time it's probably still pretty damn close to 100 speed. If it was stored at room temp or worse, I imagine its closer to the 50 or 64 side. The main thing I'd be worried about is a color shift, as Ektachrome goes quite magenta when expired. Hope it looks good and you can get a bunch of it though! Shooting slide is the best.

Yeah I've never shot any slide before so it was a new experience. Wasn't really sure how to meter, tried to put highlights in zone 7 roughly but wasn't consistent with it.
A lot different to my willy nilly style of shooting B&W. Usually just take one meter reading of the highlights and shadows, smack the camera somewhere in the middle and just shoot.
I was lucky enough to be gifted some cold stored Velvia 100f, and I'd really love to use it for some portraits. Any experience in that regard? I know Velvia 50 is awful with skintones, but I've heard 100f is a bit less wild with colors

I shoot slide pretty willy nilly to be honest. Usually do the same with the highlights as you and just go from there. I'm definitely not meter every shot, that'd drive me nuts. As for Velvia 100F, this was shot using that film (albeit in harsh light). Not sure I'd use it for portraits, but might as well give it a try to find out yourself! In soft light like overcast I could totally see it working well.

I like your photos, many of them are good and the weaker ones are strong in the series.
Your scans look fine small but the slightest zoom in and they look terrible. This could be on my end however.
You should try for a book with a publisher, somewhere like the velvet cell might be interested.
