Thanks for the feedback. I've been trying out warmer photos since I've received criticism of my photos looking too cold, but I'm clearly still going over in that respect, just the other way. Here's a more neutral gator photo with only a little contrast retouching, for context.

when using a dslr you should rely on the autofocus, if you arent using vintage mf lenses.
dslrs usually doesnt have ground glass optimized for manual focusing. if you look through 35mm slr film cameras, you can see that the focusing screen often has a split prism or something similar to help you focus.

alternatively, you can try to adjust the diopter, that little wheel on the side of the viewfinder, until you see the exposure readout as crisp as possible, and see if that makes it easier--

Nah, the contrast slider isn't everything. Colors standing out aren't always the result of contrast increases—I brought up the saturation, actually. I also got rid of the noise, which was making the background kind of hazy-looking.

use the hsl sliders to ensure that the oranges dont have too much green in it because that makes that vomity colour one usually sees in photos like this. drop saturation a teeeny teeny smidge, use the split toning to give the highlights that cold complimentary shine to the orange shadows
