Tell me /p/
Is it really true that small product photography businesses are basically dead?
I was told that unless you work for one of the few giant already established studios OR work for a large company as their in house photographer then you couldn't really start your own small product photography business.....

There's no reason you can't take your resume and portfolio to small local businesses for front of store and mailer advertisements. Maybe big companies, sure, but local businesses just can't afford a super professional. Try bakeries. They love that shit.
I started pursuing product photography last year to supplement my real estate and wedding photography. Now, a year later, product photography is my main source of income. I don't work for a big photography company and I'm not an in-house photographer. I do all of my marketing, shooting, and editing. Its taken me a little while to get the ball rolling, but now I have a consistent stream of products showing up every week. I'm on course to quit real estate photography by the end of this year and pursue product photography full time.
tl;dr im a single person running a (mildly) successful product photography company that started last year.

Any resources or further information/tips? I would much prefer to be doing product photography than dealing with real estate agents. Did you used to do all your real estate retouching yourself? I usually outsource the retouching.

depends on what kind of product photography you're talking about. just packshots for webshop use? no way you can beat the prices the big studios offer. doing high quality product shoots with excellent retouching can be done as an independent

You could probably get people that make stuff on sites like etsy to pay you if you sent them a portfolio

How did you get into it?
