Good afternoon /p/,
It's been a good while since I've made a thread and I have some new stuff to share while I'm between trips. I took a trip to California last month and have some other stuff to share. Maybe I'll even get around to developing the black and whites sometime this week and I'll have more to share then.
I'll start with this one from Death Valley, the most unreal and huge mud cracks I've ever seen on Velvia 50.

Great, another faggot shows up.
I've also been working on getting a drum scanner up and running and finally have results to share. It's been a heck of a process acquiring the machine, getting it halfway across the country (it weighs nearly 600 lbs), and then getting it working. Now I've gotten rather proficient at fluid mounts and have learned some of the additional features of the scanner. This this is no Epson flatbed on so many levels.
Getting it working required a lot of technical experience in which my last career of working on German cars was rather helpful, especially when using the diagnostic software written by German dudes from the 90's. The software is slow but intuitive, you need to use a Power Mac G4, but if you turn off all the auto features you get an outstanding scan of slides. I'll be posting a few old favorites that I've re-scanned as I edit them.
Here's a scan of Provia that was rather unusable on the flatbed. If you've seen this image from me before it's because the other shot was on Ektar from the same morning. I'll try to put some comparisons in this thread eventually. For the time being I'm waiting on some more RAM to show up for my computer in a few days. The 2gb files take absolutely forever to work on with only 8gb of RAM.

Sand dunes on Provia. Not all of these will be drum scans as I developed a ton of film before I got the scanner running and ran them through the Epson.
On top of that the drum scanner takes money to run every time as you have to use quite a bit of expensive tape, mylar sheets, and mounting fluid. I'll be scanning everything on the Epson and then only stuff that will be getting printed will go through the drum scanner.

gday alex nice photo this one. Still travelling in a van?
Also, do you know of any portable printers I could use otr? hopefully powered by usb but wall plugs should be fine too.

I'm at home now but will be back in the van for a couple weeks soon. It's a great way to get around, but I've never done any on the road printing at all. I rarely get any work done on the road aside from actual photography and answering emails. Sorry no help in the printing department there.
Yes that is an older shot, I'll probably stick to my Ektar one for printing.
Here's a rescan of an old 645 slide that I need to be able to print bigger.

Awesome to see some new shots dude. Also hyped for you getting a drum scanner! Will be chillin in this thread.
>>3035589
And here's a closeup showing the old scan versus the new. I was playing with the scanners aperture function, which a scanner tech explained that stopping the aperture all the way down resolves all the grain better. I think the guy was a bit obsessed with grain though and I will be scanning with the default aperture in the future as it's too much for my taste.
You can see there's a ton of additional detail, but the grain is too sharp. I'll be rescanning this one again next time I load up a drum with roll film. I'll post more crops perhaps tomorrow, I'm not kidding these files practically blow up my computer, I can't even have a web browser open during file saving and such.

That's funny, I was just thinking about Alex the other day. Somehow we've got to coax, cajole, or coerce you into shooting more B&W.
Maybe my eye has become corrupt, but it's like most, if not all, of these (especially the cracked earth, close-up of stones, dunes, bushes, anything with strong game in texture and shape porn) would look majestic on t-max. To contrast, in colour they seem more like there's real nice light in the sky and it's also colouring this dried-up lakebed, which doesn't do much for me -- in particular when the colour medium doesn't seem to represent texture as I'd expect of photo film. (but, I know jack shit about slides anyway.)
Nice thread, thank you based Alex

I see that you're taking full advantage of vanlife, and am considerably jealous. You aren't neglecting bike-life, are you? Let me know if you want to go on a spring or autumn bike tour, you know who it is.
>>3035767
Holy shit that's such a big slide, that's beautiful. Do you mail your color film somewhere for developing or what? I've still never shot slides or really any color film at all, I've just done black and white for years. It would be pretty neat to shoot some medium format slides.
Also these photos are making me mad jelly, a road trip to Death Valley is one of my dream trips. The OP photo especially is great. Next week I'm doing a road trip but just to West Texas and New Mexico, I don't have enough time right now to drive all the way to California.
>>3035767
Realistically, if someone wanted to pay for a drumscan how much would you charge them? You mentioned earlier that it cost you a bit of money each time to do your own negs/slides, so I'd imagine it wouldn't be cheap for someone else to pay you to do it
>>3035826
Pretty sure he does all of his E6 and C41 processing himself. If I remember correctly he acquired a JOBO processing system which makes the whole thing a little easier
>>3035804
For one of the actual slides? I think I would settle for $150k. That's what I value a print run at so I think that would convince me to let go of the slide, heck I'd even through in a finished drum scan at that price.
>>3035809
Thanks for the thoughts, man. >>3035589 Yep, this one was Pawnee and we need to go there again. Of course on bike too. >>3035606 This sort of shot was surprisingly hard to pull off on 4x5, it's that shallow even at f16.
I haven't forgotten about bike life at all! I brought it with me on the back of the van when I went to Appalachia and really loved riding through the autumn forests - and all the extra oxygen at low altitude. I left my schedule open at the very beginning of May, and since I've rode to Pawnee the last three years I want to go again. I think I want to go for three or four days this time to increase the chances of having a day where we don't get pummeled by a supercell with inches of hail. You interested?
>>3035826
I do all my own film developing, it's really not all that bad. I did get a Jobo given to me a while back which definitely helps though. Where you going in TX and NM? Both states have beautiful desert terrain. Big Bend in TX is remote and wild, White Sands in NM is unlike any other place I've seen.
>>3035855
Thanks anon, I have an Epson v700 that I've used for nearly 10 years now.

I have considered doing scans for other people. Most labs charge between $75 and $150 for medium format and between $150 and $250 for 4x5... for a single scan. I'm thinking of doing other peoples scans for $40 for medium format (except for 6x17) and $75 for 4x5. I can get all the resolution and DR of a lab but I can't get the dust free environment so I could clean the files up later.

that's something that I was wondering. How bad is the dust with these things? Also do you plan on working on a set-up that would let you scan in a dust free environment sometimes?
>>3035973
Even in the same environment, wet mounting seems to remove about 75% of the dust I would see on the flatbed so it's already a good start. I don't think I'll be able to take any big dust-reduction measures at this time. I will get a humidifier soon and in the future I could possibly hardwoord the floor in the scanning room. Not entirely sure yet.

Always interested. HMU and let's make it happen!
A supercell is fine too. Maybe not ideal though....
>>3035970
I've been considering doing a van thing like you, shopping around to see what prices are like.
What are some of the bare minimum essentials for the interior of your van? And when you're out on multi day trips, do you ever stay at hotels to shower up or anything? Where do you shit? And I assume you take this van to your photo shows around the country too, do you sleep in your van from day to day when doing these shows?
>>3036004
Alright I'll hit you up soon!
>>3036054
Vans are the way to go. It's made traveling super easy and it's the perfect compromise between living comfort and size. I'm fine with roughing it a bit and don't need all the luxuries while I'm on the road.
Mine is rather spartan. I pulled out the back two rows of seats and built a raised bed that gives me storage underneath. I put a swivel on the front passenger seat that lets me turn it around and kick my feet up while having a place to sit comfortably. I shit in the woods or the desert, or at a gas station if I'm swinging through town. I usually take a sponge bath out of a jug of water every few days and then pay for a shower at a rec center or something once a week. Death Valley had a pool in the hotel where you could pay $5 for a shower and also do laundry for a few bucks. Mostly I just try to find camp sites like pic related. There's so much of this in the west and it's all legal and free.
When I'm doing shows it's a bit of a struggle because the van is full. If I'm in a Colorado mountain town I set up my booth and then sleep in my empty van down a dirt road while the van is empty. If I'm doing a show in a bigger city I'll get a room with airbnb which is often cheaper than trying to pay for a campground in a city. I haven't yet tried city street camping but I've heard of many traveling artists doing it.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm going to be saving up and testing at some upcoming shows to get an idea of what will sell better at these places. And I've been watching videos of people converting their vans. I was thinking of doing something like what you described. I don't need fancy, Just a bed with storage beneath.
>>3036088
Awesome. These old vans are so cheap too. It helps if you have some ability to work on vehicles too, mine has need a touch of help on the road a couple times but nothing too bad. It was just a couple grand to buy the thing and it's all wheel drive with a lift so I can't ask for more.
If you want to be able to fit yourself for sleeping in addition to an art show booth, then something like one of the Sprinter vans would be awesome. Too bad they are ridiculously overpriced. For the time being I'm pretty happy with mine, though I have considered a trailer so I can tow the show and then leave it behind when I want to go explore. I'll definitely continue with this setup for the remainder of the year unless I find I need a huge tax deduction...

what about in digital?
>>3036086
The Kenneth puts a warming filter and two circular polarizers on his camera, then overexposes until Velvia has a gnarly colour shift. He can do this because his film is on a roll and his gear is a Leica. Stay good, Alex.
>>3036094
For shows and the like, have you considered a roof top tent?
I know they're expensive which is why I haven't made the jump, but it's worth considering.
>>3036094
Yeah, my prints and metal grids for my shows take up a shit load of space. It currently requires me to use two vehicles (mine and my gfs truck). I was thinking 4 wheel drive would be absolutely needed for photo trips, preferably if it is able to be disengaged for fuel economy purposes. I have more capability with cars than the average person has, and I would be able to fix minor things.
I was thinking of getting a ford econoline to ensure I could fit all my shit in there. But I'm honestly not to versed on vans, so I would have to look around a little bit, check them out in person and see what I like. Im looking to spend less than 5k for it, which I think is doable. There are county auctions all the time near my house and they sell vans like this, so Im going to check it out the next time they have one
my attempt at trying to color an image to look like velvia

>I do all my own film developing, it's really not all that bad. I did get a Jobo given to me
Speaking of LF dev, did you ever go full ghetto, and taco roll your film with rubber bands in a paterson tank? I'll inevitably pick up a big camera in the near future, and it would be good to be fully availed of the stock I'll need to support it.
My main concerns would be whether I got good even development with no streaks or bubbles, and whether there were any artifacts like imperfect fixing around the rubber banded parts.
>>3036107
Awesome. I would recommend going with a V8 engine if you can as they will often get better mileage than the V6 because you aren't flooring them all the time. Mine is a 6 cylinder because that's the only way Astro vans came. Shouldn't be a problem at all to find something well under $5k.
>>3036133
I never did the taco method. I tried the Mod54 and even the earlier versions of that just didn't flow well enough for c41. I bet the taco method could get you by for contrasty black and whites, but there's just so many ways that chemicals won't flow well with that method.
Developed some black and white today.

I think when I take the plunge I'll shell out for one of the B&W King tank/reel systems. They seem like a once in a lifetime purchase.
I believe they're essentially a reproduction/refinement of Nikkor ones that were available back in the day, but now are unobtainium that old dudes guard with their life.
10 sheets at a time, uninterrupted chemical circulation, invertable.
>>3036200
What film are you using for B&W?
>>3036210
I always wondered how well those did. I could see the fact that it has a support in the middle of the sheets causing a problem. That's what didn't work about the Mod54, agitation is never consistent around objects like that.
>>3036258
I used Delta 100 on this trip.

Wow! How do you keep the land the the tree so well-exposed while shooting into sun?

DUDE. Based Alex shows he kills it with the monochrome too. Amazing composition.
>>3036287
It's the Mequite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley. My camera didn't record the GPS points so sorry :(
>>3036313
There were insane lighting conditions that day which made that possible. The sun was diffused through miles of lightly falling snow which made it a deep orange and softened the light. This allowed me to expose properly without any filters. The snow is closer to a middle tone than I would usually do but it still appears bright in a scene like that.

Well damn I guess I'll just have to go back there again a few weeks earlier in the year when the sun rises further to the north. Sounds like a good time.

I spent some time diving into the first color negative scan from the drum scanner. The scanner software is rather lousy at the inversion process so I scanned it in as a positive and inverted it manually with a curves layer. Right away I noticed colors that were impossible on the Epson, I can't even explain it. The bright parts of the sky were much more colorful without being over-blown and there's no more of that dreaded cyan that the Epson loves to exaggerate. And no more shitty color banding. I can't wait to work with more of the old negatives.

I should post the old scan to compare. Of course it's incredibly hard to compare negative scans because there's really no "correct" colors, and showing the raw scans out of each one would mean nothing (especially since one of them was scanned as a positive). Either way, the new scan has colors I would have never been able to get before. I didn't think it could vary this much.

flatbed 4lyfe.
a lot of these I feel would be really weak if not for being large format
I'm not sure if I'm getting harder to impress or you're declining in artistry though

hi alex, question unrelated to your photos but when you export from photoshop how do you get your name on the metadata information?
>>3040648
Interesting. I'd like to think I haven't gone downhill, but rather each thread has always had its weak images and ones you look back through the images that have been further curated it appears to be a quality body of work. A nostalgia for that past if you will. Of course, we all have our peaks and valleys and we all have room to improve.
>>3040649
Go to File>File Info in Photoshop and type in an artist name.
