I've been playing around in photoshop trying to create a VHS type effect with photos I have taken (significantly cropped). i could really use some constructive criticism on this method on how to improve it, and what might be good to add to it. I really like the way they come out but I feel like something is missing.

the biggest thing for me is the obvious colour gradient placed over the whole photo going from long side to long side.
>>3030920
Also just noticed the noise structure is all repeating pattern. Maybe try take some texture samples from real VHS
>that super fake and gay VHS """""""emulation""""""
lmaooooooooooooooooooooooo bet this millennial only knows VHS tapes from the ironic 80s themed gifs he sees in tumblr.
>>3030920
That was my attempt to put in a more "screen like" appearence, along with the texture. Pic related is a different try. How would you suggest I make it less obvious?
>>3030921
Sorry for being a photoshop noob but how do I do this?

Not helpful in the slightest, if your just gonna shitpost, leave

>mfw millennial is to dumb to understand advice
go and watch an actual tape you mongoloid. how can you emulate something youve never seen? how dumb can you be?
I suggest taking a photo of whatever you want to have this effect. Then, display that image on-screen through rca. Reshoot the photo on whatever you're displaying the image on while fucking with the video feed. You'll get more believable (and less cheesey) results.

go back to /b faggot

You'll probably learn a bit more on /gd/ although it would probably take a solid week for anyone to respond to your questions

You can try to find some on the web, even some free ones can help you.
For me, the only problem is that you trying to strong, only really old VHS or players will have a image soo bad.
>>3030918
that's not vhs at all.
>>3030925
how is that any close to a fucking vhs
kid, go watch some actual tapes
look like you seen a lot of them on tumblr
M8 you've never seen a VHS in your life, have you?
They're either somewhat washed out or really over saturated with some chromatic aberration. You generally don't see lots of weird colors or distortions unless the tape or player is fucked up. I know that Tim Heidecker would do things like beat on the tape player or lay books on top of it when filming their show to give it that distortion.
Old Japanese street racing videos are also a great source of finding videos with that stereotypical VHS look.

Yugoslav war videos too if you want more of that pixelated rainbow bukkake.

this starts to be pretty close, just add some heavy edge enhancement, tracking errors and chroma noise
>>3032044
You're right, I cannot remember having seen VHS material that didn't show massive CAs.
Not sure about the tracking errors.

I only saw it on CRT TV at normal viewing distance or even more far away, but you're right, the closer one got to such a TV, the more the RGB lines became visible.. should be more vertical lines. Forgot the different aspect ratio.
>>3032050
>>3032054
better? Don't think vertical RGB lines are going to be easy to add and were only visible at the viewing medium, but not part of the stock itself. Simple grain filter has to be enough.

Too sharp of you're trying to emulate a close up of the tv
