Trying astrophotography.
c&c would be loved. First night out, so still learning how to focus and find best iso and shutter to avoid star trails/

minimum shutter speed without star trails = 500 / (focal length x crop factor). Looks pretty good.
It's an awesome photo. Particularly for your first try. One thing to note is the white balance of the image. Its a bit hard with such contrasting WB's but you could try to make the sky black by increasing the Kelvin and reducing then applying a filter over the trees to reduce the Kelvin. If you are in the southern hemisphere i would recommend as well waiting for like 2 hours before sunrise to capture the milky way.

Meant to post with description: This shot is a little noisy, I took a bunch of pictures to stack for noise reduction but unfortunately with the aurora it screws up the stacking a lot. Still trying to find a good way to get it stacked and will post an update if I get it.

I wouldn't bother stacking with the aurora. The process of stacking takes any definition of pillars and bands out of the aurora, making that part of the photo lackluster. Dark, clear skies are much more common that the aurora, so when the lights are out, just focus on capturing those. Otherwise, shoot the stars on clear nights without the aurora.
You could also just shoot stars in the southern sky so the aurora is to your back. Pic related and the following picture were taken on the same night.

The last 4 times I have been out to shoot the sky my shots have been overtaken by glow from aurora. XD It's very common here where I live.
As for stacking I posted an unstacked picture and personal I don't feel as if any definition was lost but there are leaps and bounds in noise reduction. I did chose to remove the color and balance the whites a lot for that shot >>3027954 (It looked more purple immediately after the stack processing)
I also took this picture (Panorama) the same night.

I meant just facing south. Although if you're in Alaska I'd guess that you might still see the Aurora to the south, which happened to me on the shore of Lake superior, quite a bit south of you.
I'll be honest, its tough to relate to your situation. I have to drive at least 4 hours north to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. If I was you, I'd take advantage of all the activity you get up there.

Nice Andromeda! I got one too, but I only had my 18-55 kit lense at the time. Lol
On nights with more active aurora I enjoy taking pics of them, But on a standard evening when I just want stars, there is an almost constant aurora "glow" that just looks like a super slight haze to the naked eye but discolors my star shots. with vibrant greens. It's a pain in the ass.
Yeah, you missed focus. Zoom in on liveview and use manual focus. Also get out of town and get a decent tripod ~$100. Those are the three best things you can do for astro
Here's another one where the aurora photobombed me... Again to the naked eye it looks like a slight haze, a ~really~ thin cloud, but the camera brought out a vibrant green. Bastard Aurora.. and this was around October, the milky way was southwest.

Go into photoshop, set an adjustment layer, paint over the aurora, bring down the greens. Done.
>>3028953
I tried something like that, but i couldn't get it to blend with the bottom half of the picture, it looked really unnatural and pulling out the green made it really purple like a violet..
Granted I am not the most adept in photoshop, and I have been photographing with a dslr for less than a year so maybe I just don't have the skills yet.
>>3028974
>but i couldn't get it to blend with the bottom half of the picture, it looked really unnatural
just use a big soft brush.
it's a bit more work than he said, but here's like 2 minutes in ps. desaturate the greens/cyan in the aurora and ground then add a new layer in color blending mode and paste a bunch of the normal sky on it.
i added another adjustment layer for levels to adjust the brighter bits of the aurora

This looks a little over processed to me. It seems really noisy, but at 3200iso and 15 seconds I wouldn't expect that much noise. I do like the composition and the color but the sky is crazy.
There's going to happen a annular solar eclipse tomorrow, a 85mm1.8 and a ND16 filter would do it?
>>3029015
https://dropfile.to/460Xmfq
if anyone wants to take a whack at it thats the original .CR2 i'm not really good at PP landscapes most of my PP is portraits
>>3029020
Are you shooting on a crop sensor or full frame camera? The 85mm would likely be okay for focal length (Not ideal but you shouldn't have to stretch the image to see the subject) The filter is where I would have no advice.. I know a good solar filter generally costs $100-$200.
>>3029024
I'm thinking about to get more to a landscape together with the eclipse.. no money for a good solar filter.
Maybe stacking a variable ND with the ND16 would save my sensor?
>>3029025
Unfortunately I just don't know enough on the matter. But I would be really interested to see the results of your attempt.
>>3029023
So, I could process this a ton of different ways but I thought i'd try to do it in a similar "style" as yours. with a strong blue silhouetted foregrround and high contrast star field. But I tried to not blow up the noise as much.

You seem to know a lot more about post than I do. Got any tips for exporting? My pics look nice a crisp in LR or PS, but as soon as I export them it gets some fuzzyness and slightly off focus.
>>3029057
Nice exposure with little noise is obviously what we are all searching for. The trick is trial and error. I am working with a crappy d3200 who's low light performance is very mediocre and the pics listed below are mine. Most of my shots are taken at ISO 3200, but depending on your camera it might handle higher ISO with less noise. I have seen some sony a7 pics shooting 6400 that seem to have the same if not less noise than mine.
>>3028518
>>3028492
>>3028445
>>3028441
>>3027954
>>3027752
Ultimately next time you go out, open your F stop fully, take 20 second exposures, and set the ISO at 800, then 1600, then 3200, then 6400. Then see if the extra light intake is worth the noise increase.
The pic attached is no PP at 3200 ISO on my 14mm rokinon f2.8

I had to Cut it from 12 seconds to just under 4 to make it within the size limit here and the compression kinda sucks.. but still.... Also in PP I subdued the greens a lot so the other colors kicked a little more. the greens were super vibrant to naked eye and even more so to camera.

Kinda hard to get focus with a G3 camera cause you gotta first focus on a bright star doing a loop capture then you can start trying to do normal pictures I've been talking to people about the Orion Sirius ED80 EQ-G Computerized GoTo Refractor Telescope I think I'm going for it might end up trying to get a triplet next year with income tax I mean the Sirius mount is pretty pricey I only have $400 to send if I bought the mount problem is I don't wanna wait months to save up I want it now but don't have the money for a better OTA.

I want to have my own pictures to be proud of and say man I took?
One of the last pictures I've gotten to take with my current setup till that Orion ED 80 and Sirius EQ-G come back in stock the weather is shit here in South Florida I'll end up having to wait weeks just to get one night of use out of it.
