OP. If you truly want great cinematic art don't listen to these guys and their 8/10 films.
Watch Tarkovsky, Bergman and perhaps >>3026974.
And continue from here with Bella Tarr, Von Trier, Rohmer etc. etc.

TV, not a show, but the flashbacks in Baskets are beautiful.

untidy framing on the left though, huh?

could be parallax error because of no reflex viewfinder in those days.

I don't understand why this movie gets praised like it does. The story is mostly cliché, John Wayne was never a good actor, and the cinematography is hit or miss. The only praise I have for it is for the iconic door scene and for the unique themes presented by the main character.
I had to remind myself multiple times through the film that it wasn't another John Wayne B-movie.

Anything by Wes Anderson if you're into that kind of stuff.
Also just watched 'No Country for Old Men' that one was nice
>>3031811
Wes Anderson is great. The Grand Budapest Hotel is my favorite of his films.
>>3031813
Watch The darjeeling limited imo it's better idk why.
There's a movie called Rampo Noir that's an anthology. All of the films are good but the one titled "Kagami Jigoku" or "Mirror Hell" is mind blowing cinematography wise. The director is Jissoji Akio and I immediately noticed he was directing an episode of Ultraman from when I was recently watching it. I can't recommend that film and his other work (most I have yet to see but plan on it eventually.)
His few episodes in Ultraman are next level for the time and what the show was (just the company blowing budget for cool action scenes.) Pic related is a shtity screenshot I took, but god damn this guy was amazing for doing random episodes on some Japanese family super hero show.

Came to post this. Saving Private Ryan was breddy gud, story time.
When I was maybe 12, my father took my brother and I out to see that film, when it had just come out. We get to the theater and the first like 3 or 4 rows of seats are all WWII vets, back when you could find that many of them in one place. Some of these guys are in uniform and have all their medals on. I wouldn't have been surprised if there were Purple Heart recipients in that room.
The first like, maybe 30 minutes of that film, was the first time I saw old men cry, some of these guys had their heads in their lap. At 12 years old I didn't quite understand what was happening it wasn't until later in life I realized what I saw. To this day I still think that is the realest 30 minutes of war cinema probably ever produced. Not in terms of accuracy with stupid shit like clothes or helmets, but in terms of what happened in the war. Enemy At The Gates comes in a close second with the Stalingrad invasion scene over the Volga in the beginning.

I don't agree with this. The whole point was that Amy Adams charater was so in love with her unborn child that even the fact the she knew her kid was going to suffer in the end, it still should get a chance at experiencing life. That's how I feel about having kids myself. I know that one day my kid will suffer death and that it will be horrible for them, but the ride is worth it. I'll love them as much as I can and try to show them the beauty of life and everything that comes with it. Love, pain, and all in between.
