Study colour theory.
The subject is infinitly huge, but that's exactly what makes it great - if I we're to do a PhD in photography, I'd write my thesis about colour.

This isn't a bad primer on a lot of the basic stuff. The guy kinda sounds like a yokel but it's a handy explainer.
