Hi, I just want to post some photos that I took in my photography class. It was a beginner class, so I just want to how my photos stack up. I'm fine with critique.
Also what could I do to help improve my photos? The instructor said that my exposers were done fairly decently considering how littler time I had with the camera. Also we had no light meter.

If you're shooting with a Nikon D5200 why would you need an external lightmeter? It has both automatic exposure and an inbuilt lightmeter
That said, I'm following this thread and I'll post some critique when you're done posting your images

Yeah I don't know why I said that, just being an idiot. Some other people still managed to awfully mess up their exposure though

this is probably the best one of the 5. The tower is placed in the bottom third which is good and provides context for the scene. The eye follows the tower and then up and outwards with the birds, so nice job on that. The only tiny annoying thing is the branch on the bottom right, but I understand it would have been difficult to frame it without that.

Interesting subject, and it fills the frame well, but you could have probably done more with it. Once you seen an interesting subject don't just snap off a frame and leave it at that. Think about an interesting angle you could take, frame it carefully. Take multiple shots, working through your ideas.
Also be careful with motion blur. If either you or the subject are moving at a reasonable pace you'd want to be shooting at 1/500th or so, unless capturing the motion was your desire.

centered composition is a bit boring. Think of what you're trying to say with the photo. Are the statues looking at something? Are they juxtaposed with something else? At the moment all it says is "i saw some cool statues, stood still and took a picture". Work with the subjects once you recognise that you have a subject
More to come
>>3021538
Similar advice to the previous photo, although I like this one better since it's composed symmetrically. If you're trying for an 'objective' style, keep the vertical lines aligned. See how if you follow the vertical lines on the wall upwards you can see that they're all gently moving away from each other? Keeping those lines aligned is one of those subtle things you can do to improve a photo.

I like the red subject, but compositionally I don't think there's much going on.
Overall you did a pretty good job if this is your first foray into taking photos. Keep shooting, have a camera on you as often as possible, be harsh on yourself and make sure it's fun. Read books on composition, not just in photography but in other visual mediums as well. Find a photographer you really like and study the elements of their photos. One thing I tend to do when I see a subject or a scene is to 'unfocus' my eyes and look at the scene and the shapes and lines that make it up. If you don't have the details to distract you, it becomes a lot easier to compose.
Keep it up man
