as most of these buttons do nowadays, it either grounds a pull-up resistor or powers a pull-down one (both of these very likely to be integrated in a chip because discrete resistors cost money) connected to an i/o controller that is either (most likely) integrated in a chip that does more things or (less likely) a discrete one that's interfaced to another chip that does more things

That button is completely useless, I never managed to successfully focus manually through the viewfinder or get a real estimate of the DOF (same thing).
