I was bored so I decided to take some shots of different FD lenses on my a7 to give a feel for size and how they handle being adapted to the small camera body.

Lots of different reviews on manual lenses.
tell me why these all look like they've been photoshopped on. How would you get that many lenses??
Ey breh. Please tell me about the performance of the 100/4 macro?
I use the 50/3.5 for scanning film, but I would like a little more working distance.
The only problem is my EF 100/2.8 has lateral CA, and my SMC-M 100/4 has longitudinal CA and just isn't very sharp.
The FD 50/3.5 is optically perfect, but can flare with less than perfect masking, and only leaves me an inch or so of room in front of the cam, and the deeper dof and wider FOV of the 50 make it harder to achieve even backlighting over the entire frame.
I've also considered trying out FD 200/4 Macro and Nikkor 200/4 AFD, but they're both much more expensive.
>>3011789
Old manual lenses are cheap and plentiful. If you're a collector it's not uncommon to have too many to ever use.
>>3011808
I haven't used the 100 macro in a situation where flare would be a problem. I use it for product shots in studio where lighting is tightly controlled. That being said, I feel that it performs almost identically to the EF 100mm macro that I used to have before my 5D died.
Looks like prices are going up on them. If you can find one for less than $100 go for it.
>>3011789
Can't tell you why they appear photoshopped to you. I have this many lenses because they are cheap and they all have different uses.
>>3011817
They've been getting hella expensive ever since Sony got popular
>>3011751
I just finished pulling one of these apart to clean and lube it. Can you send me a photo of the mount side of the lens? I'm getting some rotation on mine and want to see if anything looks off.

>Adapted FD lenses
This is relevant to my interests. How do you like their performance on the a7?
>>3012691
Not OP, but I've only used FD lenses on my A7. If you do a biy of research you'll find there are some real gems in the FD line. A few of the 35mm versions are outstanding.
>>3012726
35/28 is my favorite range. What models in particular have worked well for you?
I know some of the 50s and one or two of the telephotos are great.
>>3012691
I'm not a pixel peeper sharpness freak so I can't speak to them in that respect. They perform well enough for any kind of work as long as you don't need AF. The more expensive ones rival their modern equivalents in terms of contrast, distortion and consistency across the frame. The zooms in general are a bit lacking but the 20-35mm f/3.5 L that I recently picked up is really nice.
The main benefit is how cheap they are even with the now inflated prices. I paid less than $1k for all 11 of the lenses I posted here.
FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU BRO
>>3012779
Yeah I'm not either, but I notice the feeling in the rendering that changes from lens to lens. I'm really enjoying my basic-bitch FDn 35-70 F4 zoom which surprised me.
There's a few 35mm FD lenses locally for dirt cheap I'll have to try out.
>>3012691
The FD system is based.
They're pretty much as good as manual focus lenses got optically, excepting Leica and Zeiss.
This is the 50L.

Yeah I've known about the 50/85 f1.2 L series lenses and they're amazing, but I didn't realize how many gems there are in the lineup.
The bokeh and rendering on the nFD 50mm f1.4 is incredible. I've seen some examples of video and stills shot with it and it's just so damn nice.
>>3013287
>Thinking about picking up the 35-70 f4. Looks like it handles well and it'd be a nice cheapo lens for travel.
What surprised me the most about it was how close it focuses. It seems to be parfocal and the minimum distance makes it almost possible to get full-frame headshots at 70mm. I had a lot of fun with close focus shooting street portraits.

>>3012745
I have the 28mm 2.8, 35mm 2.8, and 50mm 1.8.
The 50mm is alright, pretty soft wide open. Noticeable difference between f1.8 and f2. The 28mm is also alright. Both lenses get ghosting when shooting into the sun/lights. They aren't amazing or anything, but considering neither will cost you more than $30 they are fantastic. Once stopped down to f4 they are super sharp. The 28mm vignettes quite a bit wide open.
The 35mm is stellar. I got it because it's the smallest lens in the FD lineup and because the 35mm focal length is my preferred. No ghosting that the other two lenses experience. The 5 blade aperture is kind of a bummer, but I went that route instead of the other heavier and larger FD. 35mms.
I also have the 50mm 3.5 macro for film scanning. Damn sharp lens.
Pic is with the 28mm.

>>3013372
that's not too bad, but noticeably soft. I wonder how the F2 version hold up compared to the 2.8.
>>3013370
I'm actually going to pick up the 50mm F1.4 for $40 soon. The guy I'm talking to doesn't know exactly what model it is but I think it's the nFD version. If so then $40 is a steal.
Any examples of the 35mm? That's the focal length I shoot on 90% of the time.

50 1.8, 28 2.8 are pretty mediocre. this was their bottom barrel kit lens. get it if you like pentagon lens flare like dem chinese cartoons.
the zooms are mediocre unless it's an L lens.
also look into bentax or minolta.
everything else is pretty good.

How does such a wide angle cope on mirrorless? I've seen some horrible purple splodgy messes out of wide angles on the a7 series
>>3013846
It works fine. Mirrorless isn't going to change how a wide-angle lens works.

The a7 doesn't play well with some non retrofocal uwa designs, like those designed for m mount, the voigtlander 21mm f4 is a great example of a terrible failure. Big purpley green gradient across the frame.
>>3014138
It won't work, you dummy.
This is why FD lenses have been worth peanuts for so long, and are just picking up now; they don't adapt to EF or Nikon F or K-mount, because they're designed to sit much closer to the film/sensor than any of those mounts allow. That means even if you can physically attach the lense to the camera, you won't be able to focus more than 1 or 2 metres away tops, probably less with a 24mm.
The Sony A7, with FE mount, was the first time since 1986 that a new camera has been able to even mount these lenses, hence the resurgence in interest.
>>3014159
Aah, well t-t-thanks. I guess that makes sense with the mirror system and all.
>>3014166
bruh, if you wanna shot street, buy a fucking Canon T70 for like $12 to mount your 24mm on, load it with tri-x, and shoot street like a fucking patrician.
Srsly, you could probably find a working, less-desirable FD body for less than an ebay adapter.
>>3014172
I have a Canon EF, some lenses for it like the 24mm and have used them before. Shooting film IS the shit, I know, but building a darkroom and wasting all my money on papers just worries me too much. Then again, I always did feel like the photos were better the harder taking them was. I hate myself.
>>3014143
I did not know that was a thing. The 20-35mm doesn't have any issues.
I've been looking at a FD 70-210mm f/4 lens. I don't know much about lenses but I think this model allows four fixed focal lengths e.g 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 200mm. Macro focusing from infinity to 44cm is possible when the lens is set to 70mm. Any advice? Anyone own this model?
>>3015826
i had one.
it's a push pull zoom.
you will not know your "fixed focal lengths" unless you look at the scale.
it does have a macro mode, can't remember if it was on the wide or tele side. anyway it's just 1:4 macro. not that close.
if you know you wouldn't shoot tele much, it's a nice lens to get for peanuts.
ibis will help.
>>3015840
Thanks for the info, I recently got given a canon AE-1 and I've been looking at better lenses for it for cheap. Some one on here said that a 35-70mm F/3.5-4.5 is a better all rounder. Do you agree?
>>3015842
well duh a 35-70 is a better multi purpose lens than a 70-210 but that's like comparing a cleaver to a paring knife and asking which is better. They're used for different things. The 70-210 is exclusively for longer range
>>3015842
What lenses do you already have for it? Why do you need more lenses?
>>3015911
It came with a 50mm f/1.8 lens but I was out shooting today and found that I wanted to do some animal shots but I couldn't get close enough without the bastards flying/running away. I also want to try some macro shots as well.
>>3015826
You get a continuous focal length range between 70 and 210mm. There are no fixed steps.
