Hey, got a question about Bronicas:

So I already own a Hasselblad 500c. Bought it when I was like 18. I only have the 80mm for it. Want to get other lenses, but they run at least 500$ apiece for even the most basic shit (120mm, 50mm). Is there any appreciable difference in image quality for the lens glass between Hasselblads and other 6x6 MF cameras? Is it cheaper to just grab a Bronica body and 3 lenses (normal, semi-long/portrait, and wide) than go for another 2 lenses with the Hasselblad?

Asking again for more feedback.

Also here's a contact print I fucked up.

How big do you print? Aside from different rendering signatures, I doubt you'll notice a difference of sharpness unless you're planning to print poster sized or larger.

>>3005190
If my camera has a meter I use that. For my Bronica I use a Sekonic l-308.

This is cool but a super overplayed concept. The rest feel pretty unnatural. I don't shoot portraits though, so wtf do I know.

Sry if this doesn't count as an 'original film photo' but it's from today. Killed 2 rolls of Provia 100F in 120 and a roll of Ultramax 400 in 35mm.

Don't listen to him. HP5 is amazing. Try it in HC-110, 1+31 or 1+63.

HP5 and Tri-X are the most forgiving b&w films there is.

Like the details here. I've actually just used Ilford for everything because it's cheap through Adorama. I've heard HC-110 is what Ansel Adams preferred, though, albeit he used Tri-X, which is apparently much more contrasty?

So far I've just used Ilfosol 3. Cheap enough through Adorama.

Just won a Revue AC4 SP for 28 Euros on Ebay. It will be my frist film camera, it apparently is a rebranded Chinon CP-5s.

A friend of mine which started shooting film recently is telling me I wasted money on a shit camera. So I basically just want a second opinion on this since it looks like a fine deal to me.

This was a photo which I didn't expect to turn out. I was loading the camera when it was taken, back in early November. The spots probably occurred due to bubbles forming while developing. I could edit them out if I wanted to, but I think they look kind of cool.

Don't remember. Bought it from KEH a few years ago. Probably somewhere of $2400. With center filter.

>chinese knockoff.
They get the job done. Is it for mounting on a view camera? If it is, it's in a way a lot better, because you get movements and 100% accurate framing. I don't.

>>3006058
I think delta looks better in XTOL than HC-110. You could also try it in Pyrocat-HD.

I use XTOL / Pyrocat for T-grain films (acros, delta, tmax etc) and HC-110 / Rodinal for C-grain films. (HP5, tri-x, ortho etc)

>>3006081
HP5 is good. Bruce Barnbaum recommends it and Tri-X in The Art of Photography, with HC-110. Although, I am trying to switch over to Acros 100, because I very often end up with long exposure times. Acros has no reciprocity failure up to 2 minutes! After that it's half a stop extra up to 1000 seconds.

Pic related, Acros. It is higher contrast, so therefore I will use Pyrocat-HD or XTOL 1+3 to bring it down. Pyrocat is also semi-compensating.

Any of y'all niggas ever done a bokehrama (aka Brezinger Method, aka Bonanza Method, aka Bazinga Method) on 35mm film?

How long a lens does one need? Is it a good idea to shoot 6x6 frames for a 216mm x 144mm maximum total image area? Do stitching programs work adequately on hand-cropped film scans?

>>
>>3006343
I tried the one you slap on the 4x5, and it didn't really work. Very limited on which lenses you can use due to mechanical vignetting, and the movements aren't as handy as you'd think. It also sets the film back a further 20mm or so, which means that even with a recessed board, you can't use a 90mm or 75mm with it on some cameras. You have to carry all your normal 4x5 equipment, plus a viewing GG which isn't heavy but very bulky, and the back itself. Too unwieldy.

>>3006344
I got an near-mint DaYi 617 Shift IIA with a few lenses. Guy was selling it for the cost of the body new. Came with 3 cones, 3 lenses.

>>3006340
I'd recommend getting a speed graphic or something, and then slapping one of the 4x5 backs on it. If you find a used back, and a real beater of a graflex camera, crown or speed, it could run you less than 1000. Assuming you get a cheap 150mm lens or something. Both the Gaoersi and the DaYi 617 cameras are well over 1000 for the body and one of the default size cones they offer.

I'm actually still trying to get rid of my DaYi back. I've got both the 6x12 and the 6x17 with GG.

I dunno bro, I just shoot according to the scene at hand and ballpark everything. If something's backlit and I want to see its details I overexpose by what my meter is saying by 1-1.5 stops. If it's a normal, sunlit scene I trust my meter. If it's dark and a really bright sign is in the frame I'll overexpose by 1-1.5 stops.

Turning photography into some crazy exact science by looking at data like >>3006632
would completely ruin it for me.

If you're shooting negative film all you need to do is ballpark guess and you should be totally fine.

Would using a lightmeter app be sufficient when shooting medium format?

No, because the medium format film collects more light so you need a light meter that can compensate the exposure calculation for you.

Depends on your phone and which app you use. My iPhone 4S and LightMeter Free app gave identical results to my Sekonic. My current Android phone is less accurate so I'm back to using my Sekonic.

>Should I shoot it at box speed?

Yes. Velvia has very little exposure latitude. Slide film in general really.
Anything over +2 becomes completely white with no detail.
Anything below -2 becomes completely black with no detail.

You need very accurate exposure to get good values. Don't over- or underexpose. Stick to low contrast situations. A spot meter would be best.
>>
>>3007180
yes, I almost completely fucked the last roll I shot because I didn't use a light meter

Also, the film has a very strong red tint, so prepare for that

Well I mean, people generally rate Velvia 50 at 40 and many recommend Provia at 80, which is why I'm asking. Cheers for the advice though, bod speed it is. No dice on the spot meter, shooting on my XA2.

>>3007359
Why the fuck can't Fuji make a slide film that doesn't have a strong tint. Not sure if I'll prefer the red tint over Provia's blue tint...guess we'll see.

Yes. I use an old iPhone 5 (used to be 4S) with the free, ugly and ad-filled Pocket Light Meter. Shot slides with no issues.

>>3007180
Just box speed it. From what I've read Velvia 50 is the princess of films, but I'd be careful with overexposing 100F too.

1:100 dilution, 60 minutes with two gentle inversions at 30 minute mark. Stand dev lessens the rough grain Rodinal gives you otherwise somewhat, although I mostly use it because it consumes very little developer.

Shops usually sticks to just one developer, D76. It's a good all round developer.

Some labs (most?) do not offer push/pull development.

More expensive.
>>
>>3008226
pros:
- you get to control every step of the process
(you can select the dev & fixer choice to your needs, you can contriol the processing times to the second)
- you gain new knowledge and skills
- no one to blame for fuck-ups but yourself
- cheaper in the long run
cons:
- initial cost is higher
- more time consuming
- you need space to set up a darkroom

That feel when fourth attempt at C-41 at home and the results are still so grainy it's physically scratching my eyes. Digibase kit at +25C, 10 inversions at start and then 4 every 30 seconds. Pic related is Portra 160, and it looks like fucking Colorplus.

Feels bad man.
>>
>>3008815
Have you tried stand developing it at 45 minutes/20 degrees?

How long at 25 degrees?
>>
>>3008816
13 minutes following the kit's instructions. I added some extra time for bleach and fixer to do their thing.
>>
>>3008821
Hmm, strange that it should be fucked if you followed the instructions, and are sure that you're doing it right.
Are you sure you didn't just underexpose the shot, if you let the snow trick your light meter?
I always meter Portra 160 at 120, and add a stop in snowy conditions, 2 if it's extremely bright.

Newfag to film here

Got a film camera. Used up all the exposures. Went to rewind the finished film but the back of the camera popped open half way through.

>>
>>3008861
The standard procedure is +37.8C, but I found it almost impossible to keep accurately with what I have at hand, and the process turned into panic-fueled chaos in my cramped bathroom. +25C takes a long time but keeping the temp is easy because it's only one degree off from my room temperature.

You can do stand dev at 20 degrees, for 45 minutes instead of the usual 3 minutes and 15 seconds at 38 degrees.
>>
>>3008916
Interesting. How's the agitation, just 10 shakes at start and then let it be, or some in between?
>>
>>3008924
Supposedly just initial agitation, then nothing for the rest.
Disclaimer: I've never actually done this myself.
I suspect it will suffer from the same issues with uneven development as you go up in sizes as for stand developing B/W.
120 slightly sketchy, 4x5 slightly disappointing.

>>3009130
Either small bottles of concentrate for 1:2-3ish dilutions that keep with air displacement (8months+ supposedly) or one-off powder mixes but weighing out miligrams of phenidone at a time every time you have a roll to dev is a bitch unless you do batch. desu I just wanna try xtol and raw ingredients will cost me less than a single 5l packet of the real stuff and will be enough for 50+l :V
>>
>>3009136
Yeah, maybe do this as a public experiment instead of actual instructions. Seeing as you've yet to do it yourself, from the sounds of things.

I had no idea Xtol's contents were well-known, though between metol, phenidone, vitamin c, caffeic acid, whatever it was that Rodinal has, hydroquinone, and cathecol, there's not all that much sleuthing that needs to get done. GC/MS should basically spill the whole poop already.
>>
>>3009136
>>3009210
Unless the process is relatively complex, surely you could pre-mix ingredients into "one shot" packages ready to be mixed fully before processing.
>>
Was going to Peru this summer. Looking at GSW690III and GSW680III. Is 6x9 too long vs 6x8?
>>
>>3009213
Seems to me that powders should be mixed to a larger quantity, given how e.g. microphen's mixing instructions call for 46°C water. And they also take a while to dissolve, so there's quite a bit more stirring than what HC-110 requires. But again, stock doesn't keep.

What's the way to determine of my xtol is still fresh, by the way? Leader clip test? What am I looking for?
>>
>>3009218
Also looking at the GS645 (for cost, film use and compactness), although the bellows on the normal lens version looks flimsy as fuck.
>>
>>3009218
>too long
What? They're meme 6x9's with shitty focal lengths in 35mm equivalents. Literally the opposite of long.
>>3009223
>bellows
>flimsy
You may think that, but there's a couple of factors to take into consideration.
They're only exposed when you're taking a picture
You can replace them.

>>3009219
Finally a non-meme.
>powders should be mixed to a larger quantity
Wouldn't that be more of an issue? I'd rather take 20-30 small, sealed bags of pre-mixed powder to mix as and when required kinda like Rodinal.
Though I've never touched xtol because I'm not a kodak basic bitch.
>>
>>3009223
Seriously considering getting a gs645s for travel. Anyone have a picture of one next to other, more common cameras so I can get an idea of size?
>>
>>3009210
That's exactly the idea and premise anon. Will make a thread after I see the photos souped in it.

>>3009213
That would be ideal but even in perfect conditions there's always some moisture/oxygen in such a packet and the dry ingredients might interact with eachother in unknown (to me) ways, deteriorating - note how some developers come in two packets etc - plus the quantity of fenidone (30 miligrams) would oxidise with even a tiny amount of oxygen present. Again, seems people mix up concentrated solutions in airtight lightsealed bottles to streamline using it. To be determined.

>>3009249
when you're working with miligram quantities even a few grains stuck to the inside of a one-shot ziploc packet will change the developing properties and we want identical results always. I wanna try it because of the supposed nominal film speed boost and fine grain versus rodinal's "lol, unless you stand dev" century-old nature.
>>
>>3009354
Looking forward to seeing it, I enjoyed your DIY Rodinal posts very much.

I am a complete and total ameture, just started a few months ago. Have not had the heart to develop my other roles yet because my first roll came out so overexposed and I got sucked up into DSLR stuff, I know it is not a great quality photo but at least it is slightly pretty.

I like how the color of the rock came out, but it was raining and bright out when I took this and I had no idea how the rain and light would combine to be so weirdly washed at the top of the tree line, it looked much darker in person and my light meter was definitely in line. Oh well, its a learning experience.

Low ISO is better, I usually shot my stuff on 100 or 160iso film stock. If there aren't any lights in your frame just set your camera to f4 or something and leave it open for 1-7 hours. Yes you'll need a cable release. This shit is experimental, so there are really no rules. In my opinion always err on the side of exposing too long...because even that is probably not long enough.

Also not sure how the ae-1 would fair, as I found the batteries die quickly in the cold (if it's cold where you live).

Not really. It's a pretty standard resolution if you've been brought up with baby cameras. If you've shot 135 or digital shit before, you'll be right at home.

If you're used to shooting Pano 135/120, it'll even feel a little cramped.

>>
hello lads. is it possible to scan film with a regular flat bed with a light table over it?
>>
>>3010698
I really don't think the flatbed will have enough resolution to get a good scan and it'll probably be really hard to get the film flat and in the right plane of focus without a proper holder. Also I don't know how well the scanner will be able to compensate for the brightness of the backlight not exactly matching the brightness that it expects from its own scanning light, which also reminds me that you're going to need to figure out how to force the scanner not to use its own light since that will cause reflections.

I guess it should work if you can sort out those problems, try it and tell us how it goes.
>>
>>3010705
i have a CanoScan 5600F
but i only think it does 35mm and maybe 120
i just shot some 4x5 for the first time and was wondering if I could scan it with the same scanner but with a light table over it since the little light strip doesn't cover the entire 4x5
i just ordered a light table and i'll try to experiment with it.

>>
>>3010750
Yes, Kodachrome is not coming back. Ektachrome is.
>>

The problem with Kodachrome is that virtually nobody does K-14 processing anymore. So even if they decide to bring it back, they need to find labs able/willing to develop it or do it themselves

That's usually it. Sometimes add vibrancy/saturation layer. Fix vignetting and dodge/burn

I saw a Pentacon Six with a 50mm lens for sale on eBay for 50 bucks. I would be careful, though. That price seemed pretty low.
>>
>>3010302
Where did you get it so cheap?
>>
>>3011433
im watching the prices of the Pentacon six on ebay and boy have they dropped. it would be pretty nice if it wasnt such a mediocre camera.

I had some credit from a return and Amazon had a really good deal for a 5 pack of 120 for $28 but the shipping was estimated February-March. I just got an email that they'd be able to get it to me faster and it should arrive on Friday.
It's a good deal if you're looking to get film stock to have for spring/summer.

but alas, as you say, none seem to be in focus. the lenses are extremely clean and pretty much mint condition, can it be something with my aperture? I pretty much adjust my fstop so that the exposure rate is always near 60 or 125. these were also developed at walmart, don't know if they could fuck up THAT bad. attached was taken with same lens as 3009812.

check the diopter, and if not that then maybe the mirror or focusing screen is out of alignment?

After a 35mm lens for my OM1n
Zuiko f2.8 or f2? There's a big price difference and I shoot mainly during the day so don't really need the large f stop, is the quality difference THAT large?
>>
>>3011362

Appreciate the critique. She'd actually never modeled before, so she was a little uneasy about it; as for the atlas, that was accidental. I tried focusing manually but fucked it up. The statue looked in focus too, I guess I need to leave it to auto-focus.

Thanks.

You could probably get an F3 and an AiS 35/2 for the same price as the oly lense.
But really, I'd say the 2.8 is probably pretty good. Usually simpler, slower lenses exhibit fewer abberations like CA and distortion, as well as higher contrast.

I use an FD 35/2.8 and it is razor fucking sharp, even on digi, but they're quite different designs. The canon has 6 elements to the oly's 7.
>>
>>3011788
Lens is $100AU
F3 is $300AU+ for just the body
what are you on?
>>
>>3010803
Noone does it. Full stop.
>>
>>3011790
I meant the f/2 version, which seemed to start around $300US.
The Nikkor 35/2, on the other hand, is about $150, and big-pimpin Nikon bodies start around $150 for "user" condition.
Go to Japan, you could fill a wheelbarrow with all the 35/2's and F3's in most camera shops.
My point was that the Oly lense comes with quite a lot of collectors tax.
>>
>>3011804
On a bit of a budget so only looking for a lens, in the future I could sell the Olympus lens + my OM1 to fund an F3 or something but for now I'm just after a 35mm lens.

Neither of the scans are processed. I did some curves adjustment on the second but that's it.

Chaika (Чaйкa)(just chaika, chaika 2, 2M and 3) are full manual 28mm halfframes for around 20$ if you want control over exposure/dof/focusing.
Konica Recorder/AA-35 for automatic everything in a very neat little package and reliability.

Nope. You can rewash the negative as long as the emulsion isn't gone or it wasn't placed there before processing. If it's physically on the neg and can't be removed, have patience and heal brush it in photoshop.

After that a good flat scan and a bit of old PP will correct the colour casts. Emphasis on getting a good scan.
>>
>>3011909
also: Don't use alcohol on the negative to clean it, use water and washing up liquid, don't scrub it but gently massage the area with your finger then hang it up to dry.
>>
>>3011909
Wew lad that's fucked. Your best bet is post, or maybe try running the film through a wash again? This time run your fingers along the film lightly to wipe excess water off but not hard enough to rub off emulsion.
Good luck m8

>also: Don't use alcohol on the negative to clean it,
?????

I used up over half a liter of IPA(pure isopropyl alcohol) to clean a huge collection of extremely dusty and awfully preserved negatives. It removes any fats, fingerprints, dust, virtually anything while denaturating and hardening/protecting the emulsion.

I have no clue where you got that piece of advice from, maybe trying to use <55% ethanol where the water content softened the emulsion? Or are you straight up trolling, because using water and softening the gelatin + any mechanical action on its surface = last thing you want to do with film short of straight up sandpaper.

The 35mm f/2.8 is rather good, and cheap enough to pick up just because. During the day, stopped down to f/4 or f/5.6, it should be about as good as the more expensive option.

It really depends on whether the f/2 version has close-focus corrective elements in it, or not. Zuiko wide angles tend to get worse as you focus closer, though much of that is due to hood-preventable flare (mainly because of the compact physical design). Sticking a hood on them doesn't fix distortions though.

The 28mm f/2.8 is also rather good. Certainly outresolves all my 400 speed film at f/5.6.

I got a roll of black & white czech Fomapan 35mm film developed

the first half of the roll is crisp with nice contrast, good blacks, a couple of duds from misfocusing

the rest of the roll (some shot on the same day) is 100% washed out, fuzzy, and almost brown, with fucked up contrast

I can't figure out what the Hell went wrong. could it possibly be the film that was bad? I brought it back from czech republic last year. or is it definitely user error? I don't recall exposing it accidentally at any stage.

>>
Any recommendations on a 35mm camera for beginner? Up to £100.
I was looking at an asahi pentax but idk
>>
>>3012622
Could have been fucked in development. I.E half of the roll was sitting properly on the reel in the bottom of the tank, and the rest wasn't wound onto the reel and was just floating in the tank so it didn't get enough developer.

The symptoms you describe sound like under/over development.

If you're gonna be shooting a lot of B&W film in the future it makes sense financially (and creatively) to develop it yourself. It's super easy and way way cheaper than having a lab do it

>>3013384
Anything that works. The Asahi Pentax is nice, but really you don't need anything too specific. A nice cheap working SLR with a decent 50mm lens will keep you busy for a while
>>
So I developed a roll of film and there was this strange white residue on some of the frames: I'm not sure where it came from. I used my usual chemicals. I'm thinking the film got stuck together on the reel; my fault for not loading it properly.

Anyone ever have this happen? Only on the last few frames of the roll.
