the road leading off in the distance is too overblown imo, couldve guided the eyes to his face if you stepped a bit to the right and framed his head in the point of dissapearance. again i feel like sharper but messy trees usually works better than oof mess.

Regarding the overblown highlights: I had them set "normal" at first, but the snow was messy and muddy so I've decided to push the highlights up again to make it a bit brighter and more white.
Tbh I didn't want to stop down further with the aperture because clients like this cliche bokeh stuff. He explicitly asked for this effect, so he got it^^
Is there any way to achieve a more tasty bokeh (except shooting wider open) or is this more of a issue with this specific lens?

I think this one is the weakest of the three. I generally like foggy/misty lighting (like in your first pic) but this feels a bit boring. The crop of the tree seems a little tight, and its not a particularly aesthetic tree to begin with. I'm wondering if this one would've benefitted from being shot a little farther out, with the tree occupying less of the frame. It would kinda emphasize the loneliness of the tree, with nothing else around. On the other hand there's the kinda distracting other cluster of trees at the right of the frame, so maybe the angle I'm describing wouldn't have been possible anyways in these surroundings. Just some thoughts.

When dealing with tricky scenes for lighting, like this one, I always remind myself that if grad filters were ok for Kubrick, they're ok for me.
You've got a nice sky (which you've made look nice enough, albeit with some weird haloing towards the right hand side where the sky meets the silhouette of the land), and a nice foreground and subject too but your exposure has made the foreground and subject look a bit shit. I would increase exposure maybe 1.66 stops and bring the sky back with a nice wide grad filter.

Portraits in poor light with cluttered backgrounds are never going to set the world on fire, and unfortunately that's what you've got here. Suggest flash in this situation, which won't be pretty but will at least make the subject sharp (slow shutter means he's soft) and move them away from the kitchen - frame very precisely with the paintings on the wall forming some kind of ordered background, ideally in a way that makes the subject stand out. See if you can get him to make eye contact as well. Also watch out for WB, this looks a bit brown.

Having the headlights coming straight at you is cool, and the sky looks ok but everything is massively underexposed (so e.g. sky looks murky) and you've got no compositional devices to help people navigate the frame.
You really really need to get your settings right - f13 is way too small an aperture (same goes for your other shots to a lesser extent). With this cam I would shoot as wide a shot possible - lack of dof is never going to be a problem with a small sensor, but you could be getting a lot more light on the sensor than currently.

Again with the halos, f16should be f4 or something and you need to arrange the street lamps in a more symmetrical manner - give it more of a sense of perspectiVe - there's potential to really emphasise the sense of space in this scene.
Sorry I don't have a silver bullet for you, it's a combination of lots of little things that'll improve quality rather than any one single thing.
I would definitely set the camera up to stay at base ISO, think about keeping aperture as wide as possible, shoot raw I found you can and expose as bright as possible to keep your skies clean. You can always drop exposure in post to get the vibe you want.
Keep shooting and don't worry about lack of response, happens to the best of us.

your dark shots seemed really underexposed to me. the one with the car lights is the only one of the three where the thumbnail was interesting -- like eyes staring out of the dark -- but full size it is just too cluttered and obviously underexposed (the sky gives it away)
I like the crow shot just fine but you should know it's a very old cliche. the interior shot is noisy blurry garbage -- motion blur has a stronger effect when the rest of the photo is at least acceptably sharp

Focusing at night isn't perfect for any lens. Next time try live view mode, zoom in, and manually focus.
But honestly I don't really like the shot anyway, a lot of the trail lights are done from a larger perspective like on top of buildings and stuff because it shows motion/activity and sets a mood..
Doing it on ground level I'm never a big fan of.

You probably missed focus. Do you liveview and zoom before manually focusing? I'd recommend it. Maybe if the shot you're going for is trail lights- that's cool, but I'd do a 400 ISO, f/6-8 aperture since higher apertures on kit lenses are shit and usually fuck up the focus, especially if they've been used. My EOS kit lens doesn't provide sharp images above f/9, probably optics but I don't even care anymore. I've had it 8 years.

one thing i've learned recently is to try and capture just enough, but not too much of people in your shots. IMO you did not capture enough of the gentleman on the left to know anything about him. I get your shot as 'is kid bette rhan adult?' but if you capture a little more of the adult i think it would work towards your goal better.

Read the exif data. That photo was taken with a HP Photosmart M417. There is no way to get a good shallow DOF in this situation with this camera while handholding and still taking a reasonable sharp photo. I tried standing back and zooming and every attempt came out blurry. Even still, this photo has fake blur added to the background and and unsharp mask added to the ashtray. This is the original photo.

there are some pictures that you should not take with such a limited camera (or any camera at all, as the case may be). this is one of them. there are plenty of scenes where you want everything to be in focus and the image quality of a compact camera is more than adequate. Try using this camera to photograph those.

what I'm telling you is you can take great pictures with the camera you have, you just have to think about them more. You can't rely on sharp detail or bokeh or subtle coloration to wow the viewer, but you can frame carefully, and you can work on lighting -- you know, the single most important part of photography? even just a portrait shot with rembrandt lighting would be a start. or if you REALLY want to do a still life (probably a bad idea bcause it's traditionally a form driven by technique) study some painted still lifes. you don't see a lot of paintings of crappy ashtrays on ugly tables in tungsten light, and there's a reason for it. any worthwhile still life has a carefully balanced assemblage of interesting objects, and it's well-lit.
