Low barrier to entry, plus it attracts a lot of guys (at least 50%) who just want to use it to get girls naked.

Plus cameras are a cool piece of expensive consumer goods that you hang around your neck.

part of it is probably related to the fact that actual art photography is only taught in a relatively small number of academic environments, and outside of that everybody is living in a weird bubble of general ignorance and incomprehension re: photography

It takes virtually no skills or learning or training to be seen as a photographer. You don't even have to know the basics about exposure, you can always shoot in Auto or some priority. All you need to do is have several hundred dollars for a DSLR and some big lens and you're now seen as an artistic guy who can take cool pictures.

With music or drawing or writing you can't really pull this off. That's why photography attracts a lot of wannabe artist-types.
