Hey p.
sorry right away if I fucked up making this thread.
I was recently gifted a Canon 400d, with a sigma 18-200mm lens.
It has always been my dream to make memories through photos, and now that it has literally dropped in my hands as a gift, i'd like to start working on it.
I just don't know where to start, and how to get better at it. Obviously, snapping and snapping and snapping is gonna give some result, but i'm also looking for material that is usable to me and is easily understandable.
I also don't know anything about lens gear. Apparently, the lens I have is meant for outdoor photography, so I plan on getting a 50mm f1.4one as that was been recommended for me three times (within the price range I specified)
I truly am not snobby when it comes to walking around with a camera, I love manually tweaking it , snapping, and see what I get. I more so now realised that so much of the stuff that happens goes into mist. With photos, i wanna try and preserve is as much as possible.
I'd appreciate any help for a starter photographer.
Picture related, a pic I took last night.

I know it somewhat has a bigger impact on the camera that I am using, but i always try to get the focus right, adjust and tweak the iso and shutter to get the best stuff possible.
I know it's nowhere as good as the stuff I see posted here, but i wanna learn!

a 50mm on a APS-C sensor gets a "1.6x magnification" because of the crop factor so you'll be actually using it like a 80mm
>>2989214
i somewhat get the cropping factor, but does it even matter since the lens I already have is for outdoors, and the 50mm one I was gonna get purely on it's indoor photography properties?
bcs what happened is that some people pointed out while I was having the camera in a closed, dark space, that it's not the best.
So I was like, oh ok... so?
And they pointed out that the 50mm one I stated already would compliment the other lens I have. (to kind of fill in the spectrum of what kinds of pics I would be able to take indoors and outdoors)

the lens you already have is bad
get a 50 1.8 stm, on crop there won't be much diference betwen it and the 50 1.4
>>2989217
>i somewhat get the cropping factor, but does it even matter since the lens I already have is for outdoors, and the 50mm one I was gonna get purely on it's indoor photography properties?
You are the one who decides that. The lens you have is "for outdoors" probably because it's a dark/slow lens (3.5-5.6 i guess).
Do you mind using 80mm instead of 50mm? Because that's what you're gonna get.
>>2989217
Set your 18-200mm lens to 50mm and you will see it is quite "tight/close". A wider lens will be better for indoor shots on crop, play with the zoom on your lens and find a focal length you like.
>>2989221
well I just tried and it seems too.. 'crammed'? Is that what I would be getting with the 50mm lens?
>>2989220
according to the lens, 3.5-6.3

>'crammed'?
yes.
Looking at the exif details of the shots you have posted they are all in the 18-42mm range. It's personal choice on how wide you go. To be logical the average is 30mm, then zoom with your feet.
>>2989225
>well I just tried and it seems too.. 'crammed'? Is that what I would be getting with the 50mm lens?
you'll be getting 80mm on the 50mm lens because of crop factor
you get 50mm with a 35mm lens
>>2989234
>>2989235
What is the 50mm lens used for then anyways? I'm more confused than I was before.
I asked my friend if he could recommend any lens for indoor photography as the one i was using was apparently for outdoors.
BUT. looking through my lens adjusted at 50mm it's way too crammed. Does the 1.6x multiplier apply to my lens? im not even sure how to tell.

Don't be stupid. The difference between 50mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.8 is the same on FF as on APS-C.
>>2989243
>What is the 50mm lens used for then anyways?
most people like to use it as portrait lens, mostly because of the bokeh too.
since you seem more comfortable with wider lenses i'd go with a 24mm or something. They only say your lens is for outdoors because it's a dark lens (the largest aperture is small), the 50 would be a """"indoors""""" lens because it's bright (wide aperture at 1.4 or 1.8).
You can just get a 24, 28 or 35mm lens with 1.4 and 1.8 if that fits your style better.
>Does the 1.6x multiplier apply to my lens?
To your 18-200? No because that one was made with APS-C (crop) sensors in mind, it comes with the camera. The other ones are fit for Full-frame (not cropped) sensors and are backwards compatible with crop sensor bodies but as the name implies, they get to the 1.6x multiplier feature.
>>2989243
Also if you think real (your) 50mm is crammed, cropped 50mm (aka 80mm) will be hell for you.
35mm (for full frame on a crop sensor instead) would be the same as your (real) 50mm.
So you wanna go even lower than 35mm, i'd sugest looking for a 24.
>>2989243
>What is the 50mm lens used for then anyways?
On full frame (not crop) the 50mm is "standard".
>I'm more confused than I was before.
It seems like a lot to take in at first but it isn't really rocket science. There's plenty more to take in.
The reason for a prime lens is it's brighter (and sharper). Find one you like.

ok, now some stuff is clearing up. It seems that the 24 one would fit me best. Any links to a lens ? I'm flying back to Denmark tomorrow and i'm pretty sure i'll be able to find one there.
Any clue about the price? The 50mm one I was gonna get was in 120euro price range. Is it gonna cost me more or less for the 24mm one?

I use both the 50 1.8 and the 24 2.8 STM all the time on APSC, and I can tell you that you won't use the 50mm inside, at all, it's way too tight, not many buildings will have enough room inside for you to move back enough to frame your shot, and it's awkward anyway when you're among people.
Get the 24 STM, it's the best start imo, cheap, faster than your current 18-200, and very low profile too (pancake) which is a neat feature when you're in a social environnement.

that sounds like a plan.
For the most part, I can try to utilize my current lens in an indoor environment but the light never seems to be quite the way i'd want it to. tweaking the shutter and ISO doesn't really do much besides either making it UGLY bright, or too dark.
I was wondering what kind of platform would be suited best for displaying the work I've done?
stuff like .tumblr and .blog seems so... weak to me.
Is there a platform where people like I or better than me display their work and is more or less professional, you know?
If I want to display some of the work I'm doing I want it to look neat and orderly.
I have registered on gurushots and so far I'm having fun there, but the thing is, it seems to be a glorified version of instagram.
Something free would be glorious.
Pic from today! :)
