So having that extra space overhead is a bad thing? I'm confused by the apparently paradoxical concepts of "filling the frame" and "negative space." Or maybe I'm using those terms incorrectly in this situation.

With portraits, the acceptable amount of space above the subject's head is much less than what you've got here. You've also missed focus on the eye, so this isn't a usable shot.
Keep it up! Just work a little more on filling the frame, and make sure the dominant eye is always in focus.
