getting a little bored with photo and looking at others photos, specially. looking too much at classic, modern painting, painting in general.
on the mood of switching to oil painting in the near future. used to draw so i have some stuff on the skill set.
photo feels plebby and entry level, no matter how "advanced" it is.
anyone feeling the same?

formalist photography is garbage, agreed. there is genuinely good photography though. you won't find much advanced painting
I do both. I get enjoyment out of both. I don't care if one is technically easier than the other.

Photo to me is akin to hunting, or seeking to find something. It's adventurous and is me interacting with the world.
Sketching/designing is taking inspiration from the world and synthesizing it into something new. The act of creating is a retreat into myself and my experiences.
Both play off of and contribute to each other.
Photography is definitely less organically creative, so if that's what you're looking for these days maybe it's a good idea to put the camera down for awhile. I think abandoning photography indefinitely would be detrimental. Any good artist dabbles in various forms of expression and aesthetics as they all feed each other in various ways.

a friend of mine and I were having this argument a while back. He claimed that photography was less of an art than drawing or painting, because the camera does the work for the artist.
Really, it all comes down to your idea of art. While a camera paints a photo for you, it takes a snapshot of that instant time, while a painting is just a recreation of a memory.
In short, if you're trying to use photography to paint pictures, you're doing it wrong. >>2986405
has the right idea, or at least right idea imo. Apparently 1/3 of people dont think photography is an art form at all.
