Let's have a photography feels thread.

Whether it's out hobby or means of income, we all (hopefully) love what we do and we post here through mutual passion for it.

So whether it be good or bad, let's talk about some feels we get related to our mutual love for plastic and glass.

>tfw you do a photoshoot for some people and they all change their facebook profile pictures to photos you took
>tfw taking a bunch of photos throughout the day and finding out one you took that you thought was inconsequential actually turns out to be one of your favorites
>tfw you meet people from all walks of life through what you do
>tfw the world looks so much nicer because you've taught yourself to look at it a different way
>tfw you make a nice thing people enjoy looking at because you saw what other couldn't

Let's hear some of yours

You worded some of the major ones quite well there anon

>taking a pic of someone who never ever likes to have their photo taken and they smile and say they actually like it
>getting a random comment on an old instagram pic from someone about how much they enjoy your pictures and think you are great at what you do
>give someone a small tip about photography that seems small for you but makes the other person take the leap into the next phase of photography

What the fuck are all these positive feels here?

>tfw normies stare at you like you're a terrorist scouting location, a pervert stalking children or otherwise definitely doing something wrong which they just can't come up a label for
>tfw some comes up to talk and you awkwardly try to get out of the conversation because you're out there to shoot and not chat with some dipshit and there's only like 30 minutes of suitable light left
>tfw can't get a clean empty street shot because of car/person/cyclist always cuts into frame
>tfw no satisfaction whether anyone likes the photos or not, publishing feels completely meaningless
>tfw shooting itself feels great and everything after that is grueling shit
>tfw can't join any clubs or shit because dealing with people is a pain
>tfw can't sell anything anyway because the tax authority would have you flayed on a public square for trying
>tfw can't do the few gigs you've been offered because require gear costs 4000e and you'd have no other use for it
>>

Fucking this, especially on the beach if you have a long lens. I got stopped by beach patrol once because some lady thought I was taking creepshots of kids.

You know, I've never really understood the appeal of street photography. Maybe it's just me having grown into an edgypants 30-something odd job man, but I find nothing interesting in a typical street scene. People don't interest me, a street with people is a mundane, everyday sight. Empty streets on the other hand are incredibly aesthetic and calming, and the bigger the city the stronger the vibes. Tokyo for instance is incredible at that exact hour when the sun is still just below the horizon and the streets are almost completely empty and silent. I can't describe the intense comfy feeling it gives me, just that there's nothing else like it.

Has happened to me several times, not only in Japan, also in Hungary. Minolta was a popular everyman's brand so I guess it makes people nostalgic. Not him, but Tokyo does have a magic hour during which many parts of the city are very silent. Not completely empty, there are always some cars and people going about, but very few. It's in the early morning when the local normies are still either at home preparing to go to work or in transit on the first trains. Almost nobody moves about in Tokyo without trains, and most do not run at night. Also most of the employment in the inner city are office and service sector jobs, which don't have around the clock shifts like industrial work would.

That said, i just shoot raw and adjust exposure in post for daytime shooting.
Mostly I use it at night to tell the camera it really is dark. Similarly it's a good way to artificially keep your shutter speed higher than it would otherwise be when shooting Av.

let me elaborate.
My friend is a professional photographer. He began shooting on an Olympus OM1 and has a a few good oly cameras. now he's top shooter in the company.
In Alaska theres a shop owner selling an OM10 kit, so I buy it and he immediately regrets his decision to sell it. Too bad. I gift it for my friend and he really appreciates it. He can add this oly to his collection and do some traveling around mexico and the caribbean with it.

Same in Finland, but less snow. Shit sucks as work practically ruins four months of your life. I dropped out and live on neetbux now, until I find a way to earn enough money from home.

My camera has a highlight weighted metering mode and I found that the sweet spot for my shots is usually in that metering mode with +.3 or +.7 EV. For me it's not really about being that much more critical of myself. It's about enthusiasm and motivation.
A few years back I was really excited about photography, and I was better about making time to shoot stuff I enjoy and going out of my way to shoot stuff that was novel (to me).
>I wanted to shoot mountain landscapes, so I used my 1 week of vacation hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park.
>I wanted to shoot skateboarding, so I found where a skatepark was in a nearby town and just showed up one weekend.
>I wanted to shoot people tubing at the lake, so I asked around until I found someone willing to let me tag along.
I haven't been nearly as good about that stuff the past couple of years, since I switched jobs to one that has me working evenings and Saturdays.
>God, why won't that old bat retire already so I can get the Monday through Friday day shift?
It didn't help when my camera bag with almost everything got stolen. But I'm working on it. I have plans for a couple of projects in 2017 (including video).

I've never posted anything here, as you people would tear everything apart.
I mean every review page - it appears that anything below 5000 dollar price tag is "useless" and "poor performance" as if everyone would have that amount of money to spend on a hobby.

I mean if you're a poorfag and need a telezoom and can't afford the 2500 dollars minumum, isn't a 400 dollar lense a better than no lense at all?

>I mean if you're a poorfag and need a telezoom and can't afford the 2500 dollars minumum, isn't a 400 dollar lense a better than no lense at all?
It's not, because then you are stuck with a shitty $400 sub-standard lens and are still $2500 away from buying a good one, instead of saving it towards the good one so you are only $2100 away from it.

In the end, you'll end up paying $2900 for the good lens because no one will want to buy your f/5.6-11 screw-driven soapy shitglass second-hand. The "I can't afford to buy cheap things" principle holds very strong in photography.

Getting that one moment on film.

It might not be technically perfect in composition and the like. It might not be lit exactly right. Your gear's operating at its limits with too slow a film, so the lens is wide-open and the shutter-speed's as low as it'll safely go.

It's a snapshot in the moment, but it's still just about in focus, all your settings were still close enough to right, and you got it with your last chance on your last roll of film for the day.

>Friend inspired by you
This happened to me. We used to vidya a lot with a friend and he wanted to learn photography, so I gave him some tips and introduced him to the medium. Some months passed and he started getting gud. I mean really gud, he was about to surpass me very soon.

So we were playing Rust I infiltrated this old guys guild and while I was talking to him he was talking about how tough hes had it and how his wife cheated on him and left all the while i was emptying out all his storage boxes onto the ground then i removed all the foundations to his fortess then he loaded in as his tower collapsed. Poor guy spent a month building up and I wiped it all in minutes, he got so mad but I kept calling him my friend and asked him to calm down because it's only a game then I spoke to an admin and got him banned from the server since he was spreading slander about me to other players. He ended up shutting his teamspeak down and blanked out his steam name and picture and left all groups and removed all friends. He didnt talk with me for months.

He was really upset about losing all that progress. It's a small world though because I think i found him in ARK last week and i infiltrated his tribe and drowned all of his dinosaurs. He even had a baby spino he was raising that I drowned. Worse part was hearing him cry and blow snot on teamspeak. Last thing I heard was that he dropped photography too.

So I dont know...comfy feeling?

With the same price of cameras and lenses here and there if he and I manage to save say 5% of our salary each month he's gonna save faster than me.

There are other factors to consider anon, such as cost of living.
>>2990371
Can confirm. My wageslave friend works 40-50 hours a week, spends all his free time sleeping or doing chores. Then he spends all his money on rent/transport/groceries/utilities/Tax.
To the point where he had to stop shooting film recently because he can't afford to pay for processing or take the time to process it himself. While recent tax breaks on the lower end have helped in some places, he still struggles to get by. Every piece of new gear he gets is 2nd hand from me sold at mates rates or requires him to sell something to buy. Guy's trying to buy a 35mm and has ยฃ140 "disposable" income for food and whatever else every 4 weeks. Even spending ยฃ3 a day on food, making his own lunches and buying nothing else he's saving up for over half the year.
Fact of the matter is, companies price their shit the same over the rest of the world and sometimes it's even more expensive when not in the US or Japan. Does it suck that the economy's in the shitter? Yeah. Will a big company sell their products and scale prices appropriately because of this? No. You're not gonna see Leica selling their digital bodies for ยฃ500 in South America, because then they have a grey import problem.

Yeah, 1st day actually.
My tutor had a bunch of cameras on a table and pass them round class, explaining the benefits of negative size. At the time FF sensors weren't really a thing, so it was explained as a crop body.

have basically the right idea. I wouldn't use the word "abuse," but tell your family that being relied on to take photos at family events makes it so you can't just enjoy the get-togethers. If they still don't get it, explain how much time it takes afterward to get cull and edit photos, and that you feel taken advantage of. With your family, you want to be valued as a family member, not as a photographer.

Then, if you want to, you can volunteer your time and photography skills as a gift for certain special occasions. Favorite cousin getting married? Engagement photos as an early wedding gift could be a possibility (but not shooting the wedding/reception, because you actually want to be there as a family member, not a photog). Something like that is no different than Uncle Doug making them a cedar chest in his woodworking shop or Grandma quilting a baby blanket for her new grandkid.

>The new setup is a 7-disk stack of 2tb drives in RAID 0 I believe, where all 7 disks have the same data
Firstly, that's not RAID 0. RAID 0 (to simplify greatly) combines all drives into one logical volume, so your 7x 2TB drives would give you one huge 14TB volume with NO redundancy or fault tolerance.

RAID 1 is the most popular consumer solution, it basically mirrors one drive to the other, so with 2x 2TB drives you have one logical 2TB volume, however if one of the drives fail your data is still safe (but you should ideally replace the failed drive with an identical model to the healthy drive, which after a few years may be difficult).

You can also combine RAID levels, eg. RAID 0+1, so with 14x 2TB drives you create one logical 14TB volume that is mirrored between two sets of 7x 2TB drives.

HOWEVER

Regardless of which option above you use, you are still retarded thinking that it gives you actual data redundancy.

A fire, a robbery, an unfortunate lighting strike, and you are just as boned with 9001x mirrored 2TB drives as you would be with a single 2TB Seagate Green you got from ebay for $50. All your data is gone and you can't do shit about it.

Off-site backups is the only real solution. You can keep a simple RAID 1 at hand for convenience only, so in case of failure you don't need to re-synch your shit over the network, but all the NAS boxes or "home backup" solutions are snake oil for the naive gouging them for money and offering no real protection.

t. /g/
>>
>>2993112

This computer actually is the offsite backup, there's another one just like it that stays in Florida with almost the exact same setup. I can swap the OS drive from one and load it into the other.

t. /o/
>>
>>2993115
Fair enough, I guess. But:

- how often do you synch data between the two setups, and is it actual automated synch or just manual copy from one to another, and

Well I think it's reasonable to assume that Sugar can't drive for shit either, I'd bet on him crashing one of these trucks sooner rather than later.
>>
>>2993214

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you steering wheel holder? Iโ€™ll have you know I graduated top of my class at Roadmasters Inc., and Iโ€™ve been involved in numerous secret deliveries to Wal-Mart, and I have over 300,000 safe miles. I am trained in alley docking and Iโ€™m the top driver in the entire fleet. You are nothing to me but just another bill of lading. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before at Iowa 80, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over CB? Think again, lot lizard. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of truck drivers across the USA and your 20 is being traced through FlyingJ Free Wifi so you better prepare for the storm, two-pedal snowflake. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your career. Youโ€™re fucking dead, geek wobbler. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can alley dock in over seven hundred ways, and thatโ€™s just blindside with my Kenworth W900-L. Not only am I extensively trained in winter driving, but I have access to the entire lineup of Kenworth trucks and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off of the Eisenhower Interstate System, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little โ€œcleverโ€ comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have shut off your CB. But you couldnโ€™t, you didnโ€™t, and now youโ€™re paying the price, you goddamn 4-wheeler. I will shit diesel fuel and roller dogs all over you and you will drown in it. Youโ€™re piss bottles, kiddo.

Is there something wrong with practicing using cheaper stuff?
>>
>>2994092
maybe, just getting into it, he thinks a D3300 and a 50/1.8 is really nice gear. I've had normies think I have a "really nice camera" for carrying a K-50 an an 18-55. (put the lens hood on. Normies love lens hoods)

or maybe he just didn't give a shit and bought expensive stuff because he was interested in it and could afford it. It's not a mortal sin, it's just wasting money on a hobby. Anyone with disposable income has wasted some of it on shit they strictly speaking don't need.

So if we assume 7 drives in raid 1 that's three 2tb raid 1 volumes with a hot spare. If it's raid 10 then it's one 6tb raid 1 volume with a hot spare.
Just buy 2 ssd you crazy person.

Took pictures at my NYE party, half the party used my pictures for profile pictures.

feels good man

this one is somewhat annoying if I'm shooting in the streets, waiting for people to clear.

Awareness about them was definitely not as high. Most would go to the doctor to get some antibiotics and go right back to fucking like bunnies. No uncurable death sentence STDs existed before AIDS.

Again, you're still a cunt, and missing the point of the quote. It does in now way imply she was surprised by their deaths.

this. my friend got a shit camera, 3 years later i get an old film camera (only thing i can afford)
start gitting gud, develop some of my film. its really fun, my friends and i like getting drunk and taking pics, and seeing what i develop.
about a year of this passes, friend stops talking to me and about the same time, maybe a little before (its kind of a long story) gets a film camera. after hes had his film camera for a little bit, a mutual friend of ours (one of his friends that i just knew cause we all went to the same high school) gets a film camera.
now this third guy, every time i post a good pic on fb, or snap about photography, will hmu and ask a question and ill help him out. hes getting pretty good too, much more artistically inclined then me, but doesnt have that autistic drive to read the same things over and over and over again so i know a lot more about photography than him. im more than happy to help him out, my legacy is to live on in the works of others i guess. its happened before (i gave up guitar, gave my guitars to some friends who formed a band, still play to this day, 8 years later) and will happen again.
its kind of sad that im not as unique as once thought i was, but its also cool knowing there are a lot of people out there who like the same things as me, and a few who i directly impacted for the better.

this will never happen
t. service industry scrublord
those office workers need to have their offices cleaned. this happens at night. those office workers need to eat food, these places dont close until the office workers went home, got the wife, came back, ate food and left again, then they have to clean and wash before they get to go home.
there are lots of jobs that necessarily happen at night, and some that happen at night just because its easier to move around with less people on the street.
its certainly not 24/7 activity because something up to like 80% of the city can be diurnal, but cities are never silent. doesnt happen.
even in a small city like boston, unless youre in an alley or a neighborhood, youre never alone.
ive walked from south station to the common a bunch of times, ive got off on the last train (11 pm or thereabouts) and wandered around and there are still plenty of people out and about.
>>
>>2979838

im an environmental major and more than half my friends are qt art girls and non qt art people. they can be pretty interesting quirky people. they can also be huge pretentious dicks.
>>
>>2994742
>a small city like boston
You really don't know what small means.
>>
>>2994745
boston only has 600,000 people mate. you get much smaller than that and you arent much of a city. you dont even have to google it, another anon in the thread said tokyo had 13 million people.
its just a sprawling metropolitan area, but most of that isnt boston.
>>
>>2994746
>only
>23'rd largest city in the US
>it's small compared to one of the largest cities on earth
>>
>>2994746
If you walk around Asakusa or other similar areas at night there are almost no people on the streets, and you could easily walk through side streets without seeing people for 10-15 minutes.
Certainly enough to get a feeling of isolation, and to make photos without people in them.
>>
>>2994748
i was never arguing that you cant get shots, i was saying that cities are never empty. b
i wash dishes, and we stop seating at 9pm. then we have to still cook and feed these people then wait for them to take their sweet fucking time (heres a tip to anyone who eats at a restaurant, once youve got your food, get the fuck out so they can clean your table) then get their plates and wash it. after all the cookwear is clean, all the silverwear put away etc. then we have to sweep and mop and set up for tomorrow. if i get to leave before 11, it was a really slow night.
i have also done floorsets. i would go into retail stores after they were closed and fold clothes, dress mannequins, stuff like that. the latest i ever stayed for that job, one time i left at 5 am.
if you are in a city that is small enough that you think you are the only person out there, its probably small enough that nobody outside of that city has ever heard of it.

>>2994747
i guess living in the northeast megalopolis has skewed me to thinking that smaller cities arent really cities. for example the town of hempstead has 800,000 people in it, more than boston, which >>2994745 apparently thinks is a fucking massive city.
>>
>>2994763
Don't exaggerate, mate. I don't think it's fucking massive. But it certainly isn't fucking small.
>>
>>2994763
I don't think anyone implied they were actually devoid of people altogether, just quiet.

Even in my small city of 150k there will always be some people out at night, that's unavoidable.
>>
>>2994769
it has a pretty large land area, yeah. the boston metropolitan area even goes into new hampshire depending what source you use.
which, shouldnt their be an official parameter for that?
>>
>tfw there's one other dude on my photography course
>everyone else are middle class white girls who took it because they want to take "cute pictures of their friends"
>having friends

why can't they fuck off and let me use the darkroom in peace /p/?
>>
>>2996447
will it make you feel better to know that i tried to bypass the prereqs to get into basic photography and the prof said she thought i belong in intermediate photography so im signed up for that course?

i just want to use the darkroom dammit! just let me use the dark room!
i guess the people who have to dispose of the chemicals are bitches about it. fuck it, ill carry them in a plastic bottle on my person for the rest of my life just let me develop my film!
