How long does it take you to find a fox? Did you stalk it all day or were you just out for a walk and happened upon it? I've never been to Canada, so I don't know how prolific the fauna is.

In my case, I hear foxes yipping literally time I go /out/, usually only a few hundred from camp, but I have never, ever seen one.

Don't see them very often, but their territory smells, so it's not hard to know where to hang around. Just before sunset is the best time. I see one every few months.

This one was in a new spot (always looking for different settings) and he was sleeping when I saw him, which is always the best way to get close.

Every time I see one sleeping, I do the same thing:

I used to get a shot of them sleeping and let the shutter wake them up, but that way the few shots you manage to get before it's over, they are looking at the camera.

It's not the focal length, it's the quality. Sigma 50-500, I noticed that it needs a maximum distance where the focal plane is nice and the bokeh stays normal, then the focal plane starts to disintegrate and the bokeh becomes the distracting mess you see there. Between 100m-200m, but 200m is about the max for somewhat decent images. At 100m it is good. The longer the zoom is extended the more it is exaggerated.
I'm really torn between keeping it and replacing it with a 300/4 prime because it is very nice for closer distances.
In this particular case I was standing in the middle of the meadow looking at a pack of deer near the bushes when they jumped and ran away, that is when I noticed the fox. It came closer, didn't notice me and started hunting for gophers, at around 300m distance. I didn't try to come closer but there was nothing around to hide behind.
I know getting closer is the better choice by far but if I can't get closer at least I want some decent distant images.

Even 600 f/4 is capable of this in certain situations, especially with a TC. Some foliage is inherently shit for a backdrop.

I meant vsco for LR. I tried what you suggested (see pic), but I don't think every photo needs to have high contrast. I am more concerned with colors. I almost never like them in my photos.
You were right about the exposure, I didn't even notice how underexposed it was. I guess it's because I like dark images in general. They usually have a stronger sense of mood.

What lens did you use to get such bright pictures with such a low shutter speed, aperture and ISO?

I can only assume it is a 50/2.8, could be a macro one.
And the images are full of CA and the focus is soft. Could be an old manual focus one.

The first one is good, maybe a more profiled and lower angle would be better, but the second one feels off a bit and the third one is definitely soft. Looks like a bit of micro adjustment would be good and raising the shutter speed for BIF also.
Fourth one is a smudge of CA, can't really tell where the focus is really. I didn't know the Tamron 17-50/2.8 was this bad, how much did you crop?
