>you see the world in RGB
You see the world through three wide spectrum sensors which roughly correspond to RGB, but unlike any RGB sensors in a camera have a negative response to certain wavelenghts, which is why you can never replicate full visible gamut by mixing three primaries.
>sorry to break it to you bro but your lousy eyes don't even cover the full prophoto gamut
The full ProPhoto gamut contains some colors that are "virtual," that is, no electromanetc spectrum would create such a response in the human eye that it would match in a color matching experiment. In other words, it's not that we can't perceive these colors. They just don't exist.
>>
>>2976823
read the thread, little one
>>
>>2976880
it's true that our eyes have different spectral response than a bayer filter (although in some ways, it's worse!)
but just because a camera doesn't properly capture it doesn't mean you can't reproduce it. an RGB system can in principle produce a color that is indistinguishable to our eyes from true violet because it can stimulate our cone cells independently. in this sense we really do not "see" violet.

not all imaginary colors in the prophoto gamut are nonphysical. there are intensity limits to human visual response. and this has serious implications -- our perception of low-response colors, like high violets, is really quite limited

I don't know what you're talking about re: "negative response" but it sounds like nonsense tbf

Every time I see a discussion like this spring up on /p/ or /g/ I'm thinking I should write some comprehensive explanationof what is color, what are color spaces and how do these two relate together because it's a really large and confusing topic that brings together physics, mathematics and congnitive sciences and you can't really find it explained in one place anywhere. But I never do it because I'm too lazy and people would not read it anyway.

But I'd just like to point out a few things:
> an RGB system can in principle produce a color...
The keyword produce is important here. Some systems can produce colors, e.g. sRGB - you can build a display where the subpixels are sRGB primaries. ProPhoto on the other hand is purely a matematical construct - you obtain ProPhoto RGB values by integrating light spectra with spectral response functions. Or by transforming values from other color spaces. But the problem is that its green and blue primary are these virtual colors. You can not find a light spectrum that, when multiplied by the response curves and integrated, produces a result of (0, 1, 0) or (0, 0, 1). This problem just does not have any mathematical solution. And therefore you can not build a monitor that operates natively in ProPhoto RGB mode.
About the violet color. All 3-value color systems (including sRGB) can represent the color of even the most extreme violet. But some of these values will be negative. When a color has one of its components negative in a specific color space, it is said to be out of gamut of that space. This has practical implications because when a display works natively in some color space you can not display values that are out of its gamut - you can not make a display subpixel shine negative light.
Adobe RGB has a larger gamut than sRGB because there are more colors that are represented by non-negative numbers. ProPhoto or scRGB have even larger gamuts, but they have virtual primaries so they're useful for building displays.

>On the screens of computer monitors and television sets, a color which looks similar to violet is made, with the RGB color model, by mixing red and blue light, with the blue twice as bright as the red.

>This is not true violet, since it is composed of multiple longer wavelengths rather than a single wavelength shorter than that of blue light.

Deep glossy or metallic blue, a color that photos never do justice to.

More importantly, why do chicks in '60s photos always have such amazing tits? Have we been doing bras wrong for the last 50 years or something?
>>
>>2977103
>Have we been doing bras wrong for the last 50 years or something?

of coursh.

>Bullet bras first made their appearance in the 1940s, and featured a pointy, cone-like shape that created voluptuous results. The bullet bra rose to popularity when Hollywood stars, including Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and Lana Turner, began sporting one. The bra created a busty shape known as the "Sweater Girl" look, so-called because of the way that sweaters clung to the appealing shape of the bra and accentuated any woman’s assets.

>The bullet bra was typically created from nylon and satin. The majority included reinforced circular stitching, some with “spokes” from the center of each cup stitched outward. Bras of that era, void of padding or underwire, were constructed to provide exceptional support that lifted breasts to new heights. The bullet bra, known also as a torpedo or cone bra, created a silhouette that was a definitive part of 40s and 50s culture.

Well yeah I know the way bras look when worn has changed, but I meant that the modern ones must be making tits saggy or something. Boobs in these old '60s photos are always so much perkier for their size than anything natural is today.

Who knows though, maybe there are just as many like that nowadays and it's just that tastes have changed so porn and other nude photography doesn't show them.
>>
>>2976970
my fault, I should have clarified -- by "RGB system" I meant an RGB pixel display, not a color space. the fact that violet is out of gamut in a particular color space does not mean it is impossible to perfectly imitate using different intensities of red, green, and blue light. One reason this is true is, sidestepping any color space quirks, none of the cones in the human eye have negative spectral response. The limitations of the system are purely practical considerations of dynamic range and step. And this is the point I was making -- we cannot distinguish spectral violet from the collection of spectra that equivalently stimulate our RGB cones -- and this is the entire reason that RGB color spaces work. I'd be curious to read about the details of color space manipulation, though.
>>
>>2977126

Sure is, and you still can't post a photo with violet in it can you.

Perhaps your eyes aren't very sensitive to the blue end of the spectrum. Sitting in front of an RGB display all day might have something to do with it.

you can't optically define it actually
