ok, now THIS is something I'm actually qualified to pontificate on

you should never use onboard audio for any reason whatsoever. get a field recorder like the Zoom H4N or H5N or whatever they're up to. If you really want to do it right, get that and a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG2.

Onboard audio is never an appropriate solution.
