Too much. And I meant just the buildings, not a global correction. Just a bit to give them a little more weight in center frame (particularly the area with columns, and the big glass building.

I want the space between the columns to be just about as dark as the underside of the bridge, and the dark side of the glass tower to be almost as dark as the vignette in the upper left (without losing detail).

If you don't know how to adjust your images aside from the camera raw sliders, it's time to learn!

don't you look at the context of the photos? its clear this guy was at a runway show of some kind and just shot with existing light with his shit gear. he couldn't use any interesting light.

I would use the magic lasso (in PS) to select the buildings (which should be easy, since there's a hard boundary between them and the sky).

Play with the feathering stuff--you may want a slightly soft transition so it doesn't look too "cut out".

Copy and paste that onto a new layer above the rest of the image, and you can make adjustments without touching the surrounding area. Be subtle. Grabbing sliders and cranking them around is always gonna mess you up as dark areas become too dark, and mids tones slop all over.

There might be a better way, I'm pretty shit at keeping up with new techniques.

Even in the darkroom days, you used dodging and burning to adjust one section of a print.

Experiment with more sky/less water or vice versa. I think it would also be improved by having boats at various ranges--perhaps one in the foreground, with others peppered off into the distance.

All the open sand and sky may feel like dead space, depending on the context (ie print, hanging on a wall, whatever). Try a vertical crop, might be cool.

My only real criticism is that it doesn't say much, feels like competent stock photography.

Not at all, as long you're not one of those tards who can't function without AF. There are many situations where AF is the only logical thing to do. Especially if you're taking a portrait or something, there's nothing creating about buzzing the focus and landing on the subjects nose instead of their eyes.

Modern DSLRs are very difficult to use with MF lenses. They're designed for almost exclusive use with AF lenses (except for things like product photography where you can search for focus or use live view on the back of the camera)

AFAIK none have the focusing prism that was standard in film cameras. My GH4 is actually great with MF lenses because it has focus peaking and a pretty good EVF.

I liked the photograph, and I enjoy sharing it with others who might also enjoy looking at photographs. There's a lot of photographs here, and I don't open them just to critique or share my opinion - I rarely share my opinion - but because I legitimately enjoy looking at photographs.

I do appreciate your comments, even if they weren't what I came here for. I enjoyed your ideas about it, getting a glimpse for how others perceive the photograph, and your idea on how I could improve it.

Seriously, I do appreciate the thoughtful evaluation, and I actually think on what people write in response to the photographs I post, but it's not necessarily the reason I post. Posting gives me a sort of gratification, somewhat similar to what I get when I print a photograph at home.

If the subject is moving, use autofocus. If the subject isn't moving or going anywhere, use manual focus.

A tip for manual focusing when set up on a tripod, put the camera in live view and zoom in (zoom in the liveview screen, not the lens itslef), then set your focus accordingly.
