But i jave no useful lens.
What is the cheapest lens I can buy for good moon shots? Mirrorless, so pretty much and lens would work.

Canon FD 300/4 L or f/5.6 non-L variant
And a good tripod.

I was eyeing a 500mm mirror lens, but am worried about it only being f8
>>2961408
Those are usually softer than a proper older lens.
Mirror lenses are light and nice to experiment with but they are not meant for rendering minor details.
Another great candidate is the Tair 300/4.5. Russian lens meant for the photosniper stock and generally wildlife photography. Sharp as hell, easy to clean and service. And cheap.

mirrorlens guy reporting in
Disregard the haters, catadioptrics *can* produce very decent images. Some don't some do, depends on the lens. Yes they are a little soft and lacking in contrast, but at least a little of that is due to the sheer amount of atmosphere it's seeing through. Buy a decent lens and you'll easily be able to adjust it in post.
I own all of these:
ZM-6A 6.3/500 Mirror Zenit Tele Lens M42
Very good. Big, heavy, easy to disassemble. Often comes with rear lens element mis-assembled and therefore people think it;'s soft as fuck. Trivial to fix.

Sigma 600mm f8 mirror
Old, big, very light, not bad, but not great. Most of the currently manufactured chinese knockpoffs and bower lenses are copies if this design.
Also there are two variations of diameter. One is 120mm or so, the other is smaller.. for minolta iirc.
Front mirror reflector separation seems fairly common and hard to detect by average bozo.

About as good as a catadioptric can get at 500mm.
i saw an article comparing a bunch of 500mm's once, and iirc the writer was hard for a leica or zeiss cat.... i forget... but from memory I think the one lens he didnt compare.. the ZM-6A... i was thinking was as good or better than his pick. I have a feeling his objectivity was tainted by the brand thing too.
I really need to make oh-hi searchable by lens.
Start here. Scroll down. Most will be one of the cats or another....Click images to see exif. Compare focallenght and aperture to the lenses in the list i posted above... fixed aperture is nice like that as an ID.

fyi: i've never taken what I would call a good moon shot, but the better ones were with the 1000mm's, usually with a 2xTC
But take yourself somewhere cold and clear and I'm sure results could be pretty good.

Seeing these reminds me:
Rawtherapee's highlight compensation, and the way it makes everyhting pastelly and slightly HDR.... SHITS ME.
This lens always gave really variable whitebalance. Possibly because when I cleaned it I was dissolving all sorts of things inside the lens as well as the crud, so chances are I have some miniscule films of pigments in it still are high... but it may also just be the lens itself.
Still, I'd need to try it on a newer camera to see, and a little bit of character as far as rendering color goes is almost always a good thing.
Image is the pentax 1000mm with the least shitty 2XTC i have.. which is still a bit shit (dirty, separation).

It's still relatively cool at night, so presumably if you go a bit bush you'll at least get less light pollution and maybe slightly better atmospheric distortion.
The cloud cover might be a problem on the day, but that just makes for more dramatic shots if there is patchy cloud...as opposed to total coverage.

The tamrons I'm seeing on ebay are the older revision with the removable tripod collar.

also bear in mind that it's an f/8, really long focal lenght, AND small front element diameter. So it can be rather dark to look through compared to anyhting else you are probably used to. This is one of the reasons I prefer the larger ZM despite its weigght and stiff focus.. it's brighter.
...also has a less annular boke.. or rather is less obvious in most shots. But I am indifferent to the boke, so that's the least important reason.
FUCK
I was saving up to buy a nice 500mm lens for the moon when a $1,500 bill blindsided me out of nowhere.
All I have longer than 135mm is a Tamron superzoom from the film era(185d). It leaves a lot to be desired in terms of image quality, though I think that may be due to aperture limitations. I wonder if I can get a good shot of the moon with it?

I like these most. Everything else seems boring.

You are just lucky to be near some good scenery at the time and enough free time to get there. But you don't need a supermoon to make such landscape shots. Nor to make boring moon-in-center-crop, but it made some of us actually go out and take a few snaps.
I really like that shot btw but DISQUALIFIED for not being supermoon.

This one was taken earlier this year at home. I really wanted to go out and take pictures of supermoon but I was at uni and I forgot to bring my tele lens from home aswell.

Because everything else is boring. The moon is the moon. Even juxtaposing it is cliché. It should never be the focal point of any image you want to be considered "good" unless you're NASA.
It's the moon. It's fun to look at, fun to image, fun to discuss, but the photos all look the same, and nobody else cares about your efforts.

Have you heard about estimating bird numbers using the Moon?

Kek, yes... although I am not psychotic enough to combine these two hobbies. If you aren't submitting a paper or getting paid for it, something is probably wrong with you.
I've stumbled across a few hardcore birders on my travels, and they are some of the weirdest social retards I've ever met. Especially the ones who don't carry cameras, and keep journals. You can tell nobody loves them, or would even notice if they never made it back home. Sometimes, I am tempted to murder them and keep journals of my murdering.

Some train spotters in the UK still just jot down numbers in a note pad and don't take photos.
Also, your Huyton is showing.
