So when I posted this shot, I wasn't overly happy with it. I'd only seen it on my phone screen. The photo isn't the point of this post.

What does /p/ think of these comments? In instagram or in person?

I know I should just take it as a compliment but I reckon people here would be triggered by this stuff.
>>
>>2959499
>I know I should just take it as a compliment

you shouldnt. if there is nothing else to compliment the photographer for, people will resort to just praise the tool for its capacity of making clear looking pics.
>>
>>2959502
Fair call.
>>
>>2959499
Comments on Instagram are rarely compliments. People comment so you click on their profile and follow them, they most likely didn't look at your picture.

In person, such a comment suggests that the person is an amateur or prosumer. People like these see photography as a technical medium, they are impressed by specs, numbers and sharpness. /p/ is also full of these guys. They disregard that the technical side of a picture doesn't have to be the important part, judge pictures after exif data and rely on DXO rather than feels. Don't listen to these people, neither on Instagram, nor on /p/ or in person.
>>
>>2959511
This guy gets it.
>>
>>2959511
This was a comment from a cousin who rarely posts on Instagram so I don't think it was a comment for follows kind of thing. I know that happens but I'd say this was exactly what you mentioned about these comments in person.

And to be fair I'm very new to photography so I'm AGNI.

Disregard any feedback or critique from 99% of all social media websites.

Social media is bullshit it's nothing more than a high school popularity contest. Absolutely meaningless.
>>
>>2959499
Social network one-liners mean just about nothing.

'tis is people dumping their opinion and fishing for reciprocative ego-stroking while avoiding any possibly time-consuming and not necessarily pleasant discussion about the reasons and details behind the opinion they dump. Which also prevents that you can learn or verify anything.

To be fair, 95% of that image's quality is due to your camera. It's not an extra incredible shot that took hours or months of planning from you. You didn't hike your way 100 miles into the Himalayas, set up base camp at 15,000 feet and spend four months crouched in a snow-covered blind, eye basically frozen to the eyepiece, waiting for a snow leopard to come your way.

You went to the zoo in the middle of the day and took a reasonably sharp, detailed picture of a crikey. It wouldn't have come out as nice on your iPhone, so, yeah. Your camera is amazing.

>Turned a compliment into a burn
>>
>>2959618

I'm not trying to burn the dude, just give him a little perspective. I'm sick of the "that fucking idiot complimented my camera I'm so jealous" meme. Like, fuck yeah you have a nice camera. Be proud of it. Why is it alright for you to obsess over cameras and convince yourself you need a new one and be totally envious of photographers who have that new one, but the second some scrub says "hey, great photo! You must have a nice camera" it makes you apoplectic?

"Hurr this bread is great you must have a nice oven!" Fuck yes I have a nice oven. I have a steam injected combi oven that can control temperature to a tenth of a degree. I can preprogram temperature curves! Shit cost me 100 grand, yes I do have a nice oven.

Honestly for instagram, you can use almost any camera. the resolution they allow on there is so shitty, that you wouldn't even notice bad quality. All you need is a dlsr, and a lens that you can get DoF from, and edit the fuck out of it. 90% of the images you see on instagram wouldn't hold up on a print
>>
Would you like a critique from Clyde Butcher or from 200 people who only know pretty colors, cats and flowers shot wide open?

I rest my case.

If Clyde Butcher thinks your photo is great, wouldn't a normal person?

I assume you have Clyde Butcher on speed dial so you can get feedback on every one of you photos that you like? That's pretty incredible if you do, but of course, I know that's not the case.

Not shitting on you. Obviously, your social network is 4chan, so where I post my photos on instagram, you post them on 4chan, same thing.

Normal people won't tell you your highlights are blown out like Paris Hilton and your blacks are muddier than the Mississippi River because they're afraid to hurt your feelings.

4chan will. And for that I owe some of my hit-and-miss success to /p/ before I came here everything I shot was pretty flowers and cats. I got my shit roasted and have slowly come back to the straight and narrow. The only other social media I post to is 500px and even that I take with a grain of salt.

And to answer you I don't exactly have him on speed dial but we've met up a few times, I'm going to try to do the 1 on 1 swamp walk with him in April if my ankle is up to it. We usually swap war stories and development techniques. He *really* likes Tmax 100 in Accufine. I'm not completely sold on it I prefer contrasty Tri-X in HC110 Dilution-B with TF-4 rapid fixer but I might give it a try now that I'm returning to 4x5.

If you're ever in Florida tour his Venice location he does an open house periodically. The print room is the size of one of our reefer trailers and about as long. He has enlargers you can walk inside of.

He's also quite fond of the Sony A7 so there's some ammunition for you Sony shills, it's Clyde Butcher approved.

And there's your problem. You assume the people on /p/ are even worthwhile photographers, or even have any sense of photography. You're taking advice from gear fags, and people that wouldn't be able to pass a high school photo class. /p/ is harsh for the sake of being harsh, it's not constructive 90% of the time. Instagram isn't constructive either, but if you can't look at your photo and think "this is kind of shit, I should've shot it differently" then you're not there yet, or you're not being honest with yourself. At least I can look at some of my photos and be honest about them.

Obviously, I've seen your photos. They're not my style, I would never shoot the photos you shoot, but that's because I don't listen to /p/. You're the shining example of what your photos look like when /p/ shapes your photography. Not saying that in a bad way, this is your audience, so cater to them. I cater to other people

As I said originally, this is not a photo I'm proud of. I transferred to my phone and posted it a minute after I took it. So I'd only seen it while trying to shield my phone from the sun. It's a bit of a weekend snapshit really.

The point of the thread was more of a general "I bet you guys hate these comments". Not a case of me wondering why someone who's never owned a camera didn't compliment my composition (or lack thereof).

it's called instagress. Try the 3 day free trial

It likes photos, comments, follows and unfollows people. And you can target them by hashtags they post or by locations they post at. I get like 30-50 followers a day using it.
>>
>>2960197
Have you been able to use those followers for anything, like impressing a client?

I suspect normal people would respond better to a massive number than artistic quality.
>>
>>2960197

Wait a minute you mean there's a program or app that actually does all that shit just so you can feel better about yourself because you have more vapid followers and "likes" get the fuck out of here.

And you people ridicule me for saying social media and Instagram are a fucking high school popularity contest.
>>
>>2960203
Not yet, just started using it recently. It used to be different, but ever since Instagram started changing their algorithms, it helps. My goal isn't to really use it for clients right now, it will help to get my photos out to more people, because if I have enough followers, when I post a photo it will get enough likes to be displayed as a top photo. And it's only 9.99 for a month, it goes 24/7, it's worth it for me

>>2960205
Yes, Sugar, jsut like you're trying to be the most popular kid on fucking 4chan. I like getting likes, you like getting (you)s. At least with social media you have something to show people and connect with people in real life. What do you tell people??

"Uh yeah, i go on a japanese manga image board and that's the only place I post my photos. My name is sugar, so just go on the photo board and look for me please"

If you can't see the benefit of social media, you're either stupid or ignorant
>>
>>2960221

It's vapid narcissism.

I don't give two shits what you or /p/ thinks but it's the harsh reality that Instacrap is bullshit.

Measurement of "likes" and "followers" is not a measure of photographer skill. Look at some of the shit that graces 500px.
>>
>>2960224
>It's vapid narcissism.

Then dump your name and tripcode. If you don't care about the people that know who you are, dump your tripcode forever so you're just another shitty photographer on /p/.

Just for that, I'm going to keep a name on /p/ and make sure I have more followers than you on this cambodian basket weaving board
>>
>>2960224
He's right though. I work as a photographer and get a lot of customers through social media. A well kept Instagram profile is essential to some people. I hate to hashtag my stuff, but that's how I can pay my rent.
Using a program like >>2960197 does is a little ridiculous, but let him have his fun.

You being the one talking about narcissism is funny though. You are the guy tripping in every thread on /p/. This is an anonymous image board, keep your trip to threads with your pictures, it makes sense there. But nobody needs your name in a discussion like this or when people talk about gear. Stop being a hypocrite and let this guy get shallow follower.
>>
>>2960224
>Measurement of "likes" and "followers" is not a measure of photographer skill.
It's a method of getting a job in photography instead of truck driving.

If you weren't moving around the country so much you could network yourself over Instagram and Facebook, isn't that how Doppelganger gets all his models?

Does he get paid for those? I don't actually know.
>>

Anon ain't said shit about good photography, just paying rent. Quit projecting and grow some balls.
>>
>>2960290
There are way more effective ways to pay your rent than photography that don't involve cucking your creative potential to others whims.

But that's not what this is about. You're actually lazier than Sugar and want a low effort job, so you skirt by on minimum wage from selling mediocre headshots to future failed models.
Hey, it's enough to afford ramen.

If you are grossing more than 100K as a photographer and have been to 46 out of 50 states plus two Canadian provinces and Mexico in your first year then my hat is off to you. Anyone can call up someone on Craigslist who will charge 50 bucks for a session, the world will always need truck drivers, even when they are "automated" which will probably come to fruition by the time I retire, someone will have to drive them in the city and back them into a tight spot. That guy is me and I'll make fucking bank doing it. Coupled with the fact I have an immaculate record I'm set for the next 30 years at least.

Fact is, you've eked out your spot as a working pro and my hat is off to you for making that work, I did it for 5 years and got sick of all the bullshit if I was going to deal with people I may as well travel the country and get paid well for it. And the fact is, I've made a living in a field in very high demand that pays very well, and I get to bring my camera along for the ride and do shit like this.

You do you, man.

Instagram is still bullshit.

Come on man, don't pretend like you're making 100k per year your first year truck driving. Everyone knows you don't make that much. I'm glad we have truck drivers like you, we absolutely need truck drivers and people over look your importance in society. But don't pretend like you make $100,000 per year.

I'm considering taking a job as something that allows me to travel like that. But I was thinking more like working for an airline. They get unlimited flights. But I've been working as a videographer for the last 5 years. Going to miami on wednesday

Do Club Deuce, oldest bar in Miami. Al Capone drank there during Prohibition and the neons inside were put up by the crew for the TV show Miami Vice. I think it's on 4th street it's near Ocean Dr. on the beach. Look it up I can't remember how I got there.

Do Cavalier and get the mojito. If you can get a room there even better it's on Ocean Dr. Do Mangos. Clevelander is overpriced and they have like a 50 dollar cover charge for guys on Saturday nights but if you're reasonably attractive you'll probably bring home an 8/10 and get your nuts off. Definitely do Wet Willies. Get the Attitude Improvement and the Call-A-Cab. Food there isn't bad either. E11even is fun it's got nude male and female dancers. I've never been inside but heard it's good. Lincoln Ave. has good food up and down, there's a strip of restaurants where cars aren't allowed. Sushi Samba is nice if you're into that thing. There's a few good Thai places too on Washington. Club B.E.D. is overrated.

I don't know how long you will be there, but if you have time look for the Aerojet test facility if you're into abandoned Space Race relics. It's a bit of a hike you will want a bicycle. Google will turn up its location.

Key Biscayne is fun but expensive. Parking will be a premium anywhere. The Metrorail will get you around the entire Miami-Dade area and it links with Tri-Rail so you can go north to West Palm (do Respectables if you do) if you have no wheels. 5 bucks to ride all day. If you have the time, go to Key West. It's 170 miles from Homestead. Leave early AM if you're not off the mainland by 9pm forget it. Tourists clog up US1 and it's 2 lanes and the only way in and out of the Keys.

I've only ever once told someone that their camera was great, and that was with respect to the fact that I liked the photos they posted.

That was back when I used to shoot on crappy P&S cameras and I hated how I couldn't shoot at night because everything was a grainy fucking mess. I always wanted a camera that could take the kinds of photographs I aspired to take, in the light I wanted to take, with no real compromises on quality. But I never, ever meant to imply that the camera was responsible for the photographer's ability to lift it to their eye, frame, expose and execute the shot.

tl;dr a compliment about your camera's IQ is not a remark against the photographer, though I understand that it's annoying when somebody brings up your camera and you would rather talk about your own contribution to the image.
