Hi /p/.
It's been quite some time since I made a thread, so here we go. Got a bunch of film developed. I'll be posting as I get these cleaned up and exported over the next few days.

What grad ND strength are you using in some of these? Looks like a 3 stop which may be a bit too much imo.
>>2945527
Most of them are 3 stop. I've been meaning to pick up one of those inverse doodads, they look like a great alternative.

Yeah, once I looked at these on a different monitor I realized that. I'll probably re-adjust them before I print or anything like that.
I was disappointed when I got back almost a whole roll of out-of-focus shots. Not sure how I fucked that up but now I have to live with it. I guess even at f/22-32 you can still fuck up if you forget to set hyperfocal :( :( :(
I seriously need to get a hardware calibrator. Software calibration just doesn't cut it.

here OP, this is what i did.
if my judgement is to be trusted, this should be ektar. ive seen it tends to lump tonal ranges into colors that seem to be the same but aint. example: all that grass seems to be all shades of cyan-green, but if you pick the green, yelloe and blue chanel and shift them out of their current hue, they start to separate from the cyan and show tonal richness and contrast against each other, which helps the viewer to make sense of what hes looking at.
also your resizing/resampling/sharpening routine is all sorts of garbage (at least the OP pic) aka. hard halos and still smudgy image.

it's just a messy picture. you can tweak the colors all you like but you still wont be happy with it
>>2947839
put the sky from the first one and combine it with the foreground from the second one. The foreground is messy af so you'll have to rely on color contrast for separation and simplicity.

So the one with the people was at twilight, and the one with the headlamp trails I set up sometime around midnight, and left the shutter open just until the faintest hint of sunrise.
When I woke up I was worried that I'd destroyed the photo because of the sunrise in progress, but was pleasantly surprised when I got the film back.

OP and everyone else
Why do these pictures have such a /comfy/ feel to them? Is it the style? is it something inherent about film (gearfaggotry??)?
>>2950694
Probably the combination of film and the outdoors, but I'm guessing that it's got a lot to do with the format (6x6 film) that gives it a different feel.
I was pretty unhappy about this one. Guess I have a light leak, didn't even try to save it because THE BACKING PAPER BLED THROUGH REEEEEEEEEE

All the squares either came from a Bronica SQ (50, 80, 150mm lenses) or a Yashica-mat 124G
The wrecktangles are all either from a Leica with zeiss/voigtlander lenses, the body doesn't even matter, or an olympus XA
(or a NEX-6 with the voigt/zeiss lenses)

I like the idea of this photo, but the composition is imperfect and the processing looks kind of strange. My depth cues are kind of messed up from the large areas of high contrast layered on top of each other (light background, very dark midground, light foreground again). My monitor isn't properly calibrated right now, but when I check on my Apple devices it still looks like the colours are a bit wonky. Like a magenta shift or something.
>>2945459
I repeat my complaint about depth cues but I like this photo a lot anyway. It's got a lot of nice tones and colours to it, my only real complaint there's no clear main subject. Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

>>2945482
This looks super comfy but I wish it was framed just a bit looser. Hut takes up too much space imo
You responded to another anon about that, but I'm not certain that more trees in the midground is such a bad thing. It might be nice and [contextual]
>>2945496
Beautiful sunset and colours, but ultimately kind of boring
>>2945525
GET THESE DIRTY HUMANS OUT OF MY PRISTINE WILDERNESS RRREEEEEEE
>>2945535
It looks like something really cool is happening in the background. I'm not sure what the right way to approach this photo is, it certainly had a lot of potential, but there's no good middle and the foreground is lacklustre
>>2945580
I would definitely stay at this hotel if given the chance and a bolt cutter
>>2945775
lol why an outhouse shot? If this is documentary-like, or like a vacation photo for yourself, I can see why you took it. The depth of the snow is interesting (to me), but I don't think it's not a good photo on its own or part of a set.

Pretty good, looks like marketing material for an REI catalogue
>>2945894
Really cool rock, but again I think I would have framed it a bit wider

c r u s h e d b l a c k s
Also I don't know if square frame is the best choice, and also depth cues again
>>2950739
Thanks for useful feedback.
I think a lot of the out-of-context ones (like the outhouse, for example) are just things that I thought were *neat* at the time and snapped. Regarding that cabin that's framed too closely, I'm going back in a few months so I'll try it wider and see what happens :)

More REI catalogue material
>>2946212
This looks like the kind of street photo I would take. That is to say, you should have gotten closer lol
>>2946216
About the REI catalogue look: I would caution against being so consistent about using thin DoF all of the time, because it can quickly become gimmicky. Just because you have a MF camera doesn't mean you have to open up the aperture, and I'm not saying that just because I'm a filthy APS-C digifag
>>2946222
Too much falloff into the background, this is the opposite of the issue in the first few photos. I have to squint to see the mountains in the background. Again I question the appropriateness of a square composition.
>>2946225
>>2946370
Damn these would have been awesome if they were focused properly lol
>>2946366
This one's kinda lame.
>>2946372
This one is boring and it illustrates the issue with relying on thin DoF, just because the midground is out of focus doesn't mean the forest is not distracting.
I won't say too much about the rest, but of the urban shots these are my favourite:

You know what Dill always says, never shoot people's backs unless you have some compelling reason.
Overall recommendations: don't ask me for advice because I am not at all qualified to teach photography, pay more attention to what depth cues are doing to your perspective, ask yourself if a square crop is the most appropriate, and watch out for thin DoF/bokeh becoming too gimmicky. Finally, if you want to post critique threads, I encourage you to split them up thematically, or else the personal/outdoors/urban stuff in one great hodgepodge makes it harder to criticize (as we are not all experts in all genres at once)
