Afternoon, /p/. I've had some time to work with a few scans so I'm going to post the latest stuff and hopefully have more ready as I post. These are from a variety of location and formats over the last couple months or so.

This one is from a solo backpacking trip I took in Wyoming. Never before had I seen mountains so rugged or so much cliff face in one valley.

Ok last of the squares for now. This was a different place in Canada, took a week backpacking and hanging out by this impressive mountain with my girl. She was a trooper, even with the 18 mile hike in and the one day where we woke up in the middle of the night to 6 inches of snow pushing in on the tent.

I need to develop all the c41 from that trip still, but I'm waiting til I have more after an upcoming trip.

So, you shitposted as anon any lately, Alex?
Nothing exceptional in this thread, I'm afraid.

>>2942372
Why you chose to take another photo of a rock mirrored in a lake instead of a tighter shot of the much more interesting rim-lit details to the left is beyond me.

>>2942374
This is good.

>>2942375
Very sloppily composed for someone of your stature. The cluster of trees could be centered better, and the tree cut off on the left omitted.

>>2942376
Not as sloppy as the last, but still not great. Lower right brush is very soft, and you've again bisected a tree with your frame on the left. A square of just the center area of this frame with that one exceptional tree in the middle would be far stronger. You're better than this.

>>2942377
You've taken better versions of this before.

>>2942378
Now there's a proper photograph, good job. I might buy a copy of this.

>>2942380
Too much yellow and not enough green to excuse you for using such a bad cliche.

>>2942384
it feels like you didn't pay much attention to the placement of the crop tracks. Why didn't you frame further from the left?

>>2942522
Come the fuck on Alex, why is this panoramic? A standard crop of only the rocks, in black and white or velvia either, would be a far and away stronger photograph.

Not going to rub your nob, everyone else is doing that for you. Still proud of you on quitting your job and making this full time, but you appear to be regressing in light of admiration.

Oh cool someone actually writes out their thoughts, that's why we come here right? However I don't see why people are thinking I've been shitposting as anon lately. I don't really have the time for /p/ between the threads I put on here and and the occasional browse while pooping.

I appreciate the thoughts. It's been a crazy year and going full time has it's way of getting in your head in both good and bad ways. Of course, I've always used /p/ as a way to weed out lousy shots and have ideas bounced back at me. I really only add maybe 5 to 10 new printable photos to my collection every year and there's more than that in this thread alone.

>>2942534
It's pretty nice, a classic good aspen shot. Not super thrilled about the random pine branches creeping into the frame but oh well.

Not really liking this one. The tree on the left is bothering me and it really looks like it would have been better taking the picture further to the left and angling right.
I'm just going to assume there was a trash heap on the right or some deadly lava stream on the left.
>>2942376
Again, not really getting this. I feel like it wants to have some depth and for the pano I want to be led down the centre of the frame to the yellow tree in the distance. However the two nearest trees on the left centre of the frame take away some of that depth and instead I find my eye being drawn to them.
It really doesn't give the magic of the format for that reason, but composing for pano has never been easy.
>>
When I opened this thread, I thought 'oh cool, Alex is posting'... and then that quickly changed into 'méh...méh...méh'.

Undoubtedly they are good photos in a sense, I don't do landscapes so I'm not going to try and give any crit on them. But none of your recent photos, including these ones have so much of a wow-factor.

Keep it up all the same, and kudos for making it into your bread-winner.

>>2942613
Yep. That place is incredible! We took two days to hike in but decided to pay a small fee to fly some gear out (there's a helicopter for rich people) and hike out in one day. Absolutely stunning scenery, though traveling in Canadian National Parks is a good bit more expensive than I'm used to.

>>2942942
Glad to hear it.

>>2943094
>>2943152
Thanks for the honest feedback fellas. There's always a challenge with someone telling you to compose differently after the fact. I always play around with comps as much as possible in the field, but there's things out of frame the the viewer can's that often make it just not quite work. For all intents and purposes it might as well be a lava stream and trash pile as you said. Sometimes the more you walk around a subject the less the angles play out as desired.

>>2943171
Thanks, anon. Appreciate it.
>>
>>2943197
Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip up here to the Great White North! What exactly was more expensive about travelling g through the Nat'l Parks here? I've done a fair bit of travelling both N and S of the border and besides camping fees being a bit more cant recall any differences really. Camping up logging roads is usually the cheapest way to go. :)

>>2942378
I'll echo everyone else and agree this is THE shot. Never really scene a similar photo. Would love a print of this one day...

Oh yeah, not sure if you ever go back and edit your blog posts...but I recently broke my Hi-tech grad ND filter and discovered 2filter no longer carries them. You can order them direct from Formatt-hitech's website for about the same price and worldwide shipping is reasonable. Maybe worth updating your post about filters if you do that sort of thing.
>>
>>2942359
Something about this just doesn't do it for me, but I always think these have more impact in larger prints so I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

>>2942373
I always love huge front=to-back read scenes like this, they really give a sense of scale and make it appear endless.

>>2942378
Definitely a neat shot.

>>2942522

Very true, you probably know the tips about better places to stay for free and I was staying in a place that charges nightly camping fees and had to pay the entire annual fee for Banff just to park a car there. I guess when I'm traveling in the states I know better places to crash and travel for free. The place was beautiful though and a wonderful vacation, worth every penny.

Thanks for the tip about 2filter! It would be a good idea for me to update that post.

Great stuff as usual, but there are a couple of standouts in this thread.

I'll just echo what everybody else has already said about this shot. It's fucking killer. I really hope you have some more aspen snow shots coming.

This is really nice. It's different for your stuff. I can't tell if I like that little hump on the horizon or not, though.

Thanks! I'm going to be all over out east over about 16 days. I've got a relative and a friend I'm visiting in a couple different states but in between I'll spend some time western and central PA, then wander through WV and VA. I'm leaving it pretty open and want to stay away from big touristy spots if possible.

I see you've been liking the Mamiya, as well as the Fuji.

Am I crazy thinking that you're tapering down on 4x5?

You still seem to get more detail out of your scans than I can for the same size film and similar scanner, good job. Jealous of the motivation to get to the locations, for sure.

Looking forward to winter?

Hey man! Good to see your thread up, can't wait to see the rest of what you've taken from the last year. I'm glad you're getting cozy in Colorado.

I wouldn't necessarily say I'm tapering down on 4x5 but I guess you could say I had some plans to use smaller formats throughout the year. Like I knew the whole time that I wasn't planning on taking the 4x5 to Assiniboine. It's 18 miles one way into there and I was taking the trip with my girl, so I wanted it to be fun and not back-breaking. I guess it would seem like I get a lot more from the smaller formats just due to the nature of roll film, you get so many shots compared to sheets that you end up with more to share. 4x5 is always the main goal and I'll push it hard on the trip I'm taking for the next two weeks. I'm headed out east to finish up the fall before strapping on the snowshoes in the mountains.

I think the Mamiya 6 seems to be a pretty sharp camera. I feel like the scans have a bit more detail than the ones from my 645, not entirely sure if that's possible but it is a joy to use and it's so tiny.

I had a blast on that bike ride, crazy storm and all. Not too many fellas will ride a bike that far out onto the plains, glad you're another crazy guy that's up for that!

Here's another snap from the entrance to Cirque of the Towers in the Winds of Wyoming.

You ever plan on shooting 8x10?
>>
>>2945645
>I'm headed out east to finish up the fall before strapping on the snowshoes in the mountains.

Neat-o. North or south? Much different foliage out there.

I got my snowshoes ready to go, but I don't think I'll be making quite as many trips up to the hills as you....
>>
>>2945651
Nope. I have a friend that shoots 8x10 and I'm not jealous of the weight, the cost of film, and the additional cost of absolutely everything. But he's a complete gear-fag and only buys the nicest shit so the costs may be skewed. Either way, I think 4x5 is a perfect middle ground.

>>2945773
Mostly north and central Appalachians is the plan because the two week span I have will likely have better colors that way. I've never really done a fall trip out that, I'm looking forward to the experience.

We're up in PA right now headed west again, I copped that 11-16 in Denver, should be fun out west. If we're lucky we will make it back to the Northeast for fall colors, we've already seen the leaves changing color above 2000ft. elevation. 80 through PA is pretty nice up in them mountains right now.
>>
>>2942359
Like a hair away from perfect I feel, nice colours. But 5 feet higher and 2 feet to the left and i feel like you could draw 3 perfect triangles of Sky, Mountain / waterfall.

>>2942372
Love the water, dislike the dead space top right

>>2942374
classically great, but feels a bit samey without some sort of cloud / mermaid in the water or something.

>>2942378
This is my favorite, Though i think you need to lose the tiny bit of white space in the top left and top right of the picture. It looks like a painting, or someone randomly threw paint grenades into the trees. Lose the white edges and your viewers will second guess painting / photograph.

>>2942384
Nice and clean, lines entering from the right and the diagonals from the left are pretty much perfectly composed.

>>2942522
Fantastic light on the rocks, not so fantastic the rest. but what can you do!

>>2942550
I like that it's not 100% ND Grad pushed, but it's a lot of grey between the flower and the mountain.

>>2945556
This is my thing, But the Cyan / green tones in the mountain is throwing me off. Still fantastic shot.

Holy shit. I love your work but this one... one of my favorite things ever I think
>>
I miss the days when you shot oil field stuff and am a little sad to see you fully commit to the same ol' landscape stuff that every other colorado photographer is churning out by the dozen. Do you ever think that this change was forced upon you by your decision to support yourself solely by your photography? It seems like when you were working as a mechanic and were buttering your bread with that, you were more experimental and courageous with your photography.
>>
>>2946589
you dont
>>
>>2945645

Man I gotta get some time off and ride with you knuckleheads. I've got a somewhat decent mountain bike it weighs a ton and a half but rides good. Needs all of its parts on a better frame though, are you guys doing full suspension out there?
>>
>>2946857

I think between this and the other thread I am going to return to 4x5 and go all-in on that format instead of juggling 3 or 4 film formats. I still have my Graphic View and maybe I might even fix up my 5x7. I have most of the stuff to develop it in my truck so it's not entirely impossible to do on the road.
>>
>>2946857
>it weighs a ton and a half
Are you sure you're referring to the bike, and not your fatass self?

>>2946670
I definitely know what you mean and there's a lot of factors going into those changes. I certainly have focused on sellable landscapes for a while which is possibly a good idea while I secure an income for my first year being completely self employed. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I think I've already managed to secure a reasonable income so I may be able to branch out and experiment more in the future. There was also a huge collapse in the oil industry around here and developments are slow, and for some reason all new developments seem to have a lot more security and ways to keep people like me out. I've spent my ambitions chasing print buying customers instead of gaining access to sites.

If anyone is in the Dayton, Ohio area I just stopped by an Edward Burtynksy exhibit and can highly recommend it. I've always wanted to see his prints in person and they are wonderful. The shipbreaking photos are just so powerful. Today was opening day and it's open until January at the Dayton Art Institute.

Bonus, they also used my photos to explain to children what film is. See pic related for their (not entirely accurate) description of film for children. Still kinda fun.

It has been quite some time and correct me if I'm wrong but is stop bath entirely necessary for all emulsions?

I've got a pack of Tri-X 400 Pan and some sort of military black and white Ansco film dated March 1958 still sealed in it's factory wrapper.

I didn't say anything about resolution. It is just that Sony A7II images are sharper.

Could be due to the autofocus being better than manual focus.
