It consists of a LOT of quick masks and a LOT of the color balancing tool

Basically, my problem with regular unbalanced night shots are that the street lamps flood the entire scene with a gratuitous ammount of color, like orange or green or Terminator 2 blue.

My rule of thumb when editing is to exaggerate the light (make it much brighter) but leave the colors and tone exactly how i saw it.

Say i take a photo of a house at night, and a street lamp floods everything orange, i fix everything that need to be fixed by selecting (quick masking) only the objects that are being violated by this color, like sidewalks, roads, posts, and sometimes houses (always leave the windows alone, itll add character) Once these things are quick masked i will then (with only the quick massed items selected) use the color balance tool to fix the color of those things.

Rinse and repeat, every photo is a tad different but thats my basic process and has worked wonders for me. It takes time though so expect to edit for about 30 mins minimum per photo trying to get that perfect tone

Not everyone really has it in them to hike to such remote areas, sometimes in unfavorable weather, and getting up super early with such heavy equipment to photograph scenes like this. Much less doing it with a camera so highly technical and expensive to shoot on. He's really dedicated to his craft, and it shows.

I don't think he's a demigod or somehow the greatest landscape photographer that ever existed, obviously there is other talent out there. That doesn't make him worse - being among the best doesn't make you any less great at what you do. And of course, being able to attach a name to somebody you can look up and follow is a lot better when talking about this stuff.

The brightest thing in the photo are those two big lights on the top of the bridge.

Everything else is rather underexposed.

I would've positioned your camera so that 1.) it's more centered 2.) the lights are not as direct as they are. Right now they just steal attention away from everything else. You've got room for some nice light trails and a beautiful blue sky just before full dark.

I didn't take one, just set it down on hand railings and stuff. Those bridges like in the quoted picture were really useful for them. I'd actually consider just taking a beanbag so it didn't have to be a level surface being used, and I wouldn't need to take a tripod

No one paid any attention to me. I was nervous but once I tried it I realised no one cares. They've probably seen people do that in central Tokyo of all places anyway. However I didn't see a lot of tripod users except for observation decks and such, I'd feel a lot more noticeable with an extended tripod

I found night shooting to be really difficult because the camera wants to make the scene look like it's bright daylight. So when I'm in aperture priority I get like 30 second shutter speed. I need to experiment in manual to get something that looks more naturally nighttime.

it can look pretty damn good. film is very gentle with the highlights so you wont get blobs of white, but subtle transitions and lots of detail, awesome for that "cinematic" mood.

I see. I'll need more practice in manual mode with my digital camera, getting a feel for what aperture/shutter speed combos give me the exposure I want, then I'll do it with film.
