Oil painters will always have a reference image because it can take days for a layer to dry and is a slow medium due to its abundance of texture.

I am well aware of the properties of oil paint as I do in fact paint.

I am trying to out to OP that copying a photograph is pretty much a waste of time. Using photos for reference is another matter.

That is the opposite of what I was suggesting.

Look into getting some Liquin, it speeds up drying times. It's really good for glazes and reducing brush marks too.

The best thing for me about oils is they remain the same tone wet or dry making overpainting much easier.

Sorry about the speg. I just have a thing about people copying photos.
