How does /p/ pay the bills?

I work as a bartender during the week and have recently taken up nightclub photography on the weekends. Used to do a lot of event photography but that has slowed down a fair bit.

Currently earning $500 a week with the bartending and $400 with the nightclub work every weekend.

Was getting paid about $600 or so a week there with the event photography but I've only had one job in the past two months.

Are you still hoping you could >make it<? Do you still think you only have to invest a little more time and effort and eventually you will be able to make a living out of your photography? Because you are different from others and put all your energy in it? Because you put yourself into the situation of having no other choice? Because you missed out so much in life for the sake of your dream becomes true? Because you restrict yourself and spend all your money, free time and mental capacities in your passion?
Do you think in the end life has no other choice to grant you what you deserve? Do you expect people will finally accept and respect your work and will remmunerate all the good-will-power you put into it?

Do you think life works like this?

I got bad news for you: Nobody gives a shit about you and your great plans which theoretically could work out but in reality never will, because you made the huge mistake and felt for the biggest illusion in this world and this is: Everyone could make it. You have a chance. Just try it.

Waste your time.

It mostly died out for a few months while oil was under $40/bbl, but has steadily been picking back up over the last three months. It won't die entirely because of how mineral leases are generally written though. There's almost always a time limit for the oil company to develop a given property or they lose their lease and the money they've already paid for it. So even though they may be developing wells, they're just as often just shutting them in after flow testing.
>>
I made $52 an hour (over 200k/yr with the hours we worked) before as a Rope Access technician. We would climb and rappel structures and do repairs, inspections etc. Did a lot in chemical plants and refineries towards the end. Got tired of it. Took a job as a photographer making $15 an hour. Couldn't be happier.
>>
>>2933578
So how do you feel about job security?

Do you live in ND or did you move there?
>>
>>2933606
For the time being, good. My job relies on cold weather, so until it warms up, I'm good. I'm trying to get over to being a lease operator though, which is one of the more stable but lower paying positions in the oilfield. If that doesn't happen soon though, I'm getting the hell out of here. I don't want to deal with the boom and bust cycle any more...I mean imagine sitting on substantialsavings because you don't know if the bottom will fall out again, having the money to buy a house, but not knowing if in two years you'll be able to make payments, etc.

Yeah,I moved up here about six years ago. Had my fill of ND though, might do Colorado next.

Making payments isn't what I call "buying a house."

Do you like ND?

It is if you have good credit and know how to capitalize an investment. Just because you can walk in and plop down cash doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so.

ND is alright. Could be a lot worse, but dear God, so much flat nothing here.

I'm a welfare queen, currently waiting on a new 2 bed apartment in central London (average minimum cost of rent is about £2.4k for a 2 bed) and take home that, plus an extra £900 a month in benefits, and next year i get a free brand new car, insured and taxed, and a parking spot.

When alls said and done it comes to around £50k ($70k) a year, probably more if you factor in the cost of a parking spot in central.

Seriously, who the fuck gives up half of their awake hours to lead a similar life?

From 0 to £1600 per week, depending on work load. Been a busy year though.

Struggle with procrastination, should be working right now. I leave stuff until the very last second before finishing anything but always hit deadlines because I'm good at what I do, starting to stress me out though. Should really sort it out, could probably earn double if I put the effort in.

I love my job and I doubt you actually love being so frail and sickly you actually managed to catch TEN more than once.
How long do you expect to live and how miserable do you think the last, say, three years of it will be?

You remind me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer intentionally becomes morbidly obese so he can work from home.
Nobody here envies you your pathetic condition, no matter how much money the State is handing your out of pity.

As long as i don't have another reaction, i have the same life expectancy as anyone else. I can manage without Anti depressants and I've found an anti biotic i don't react to.

And I've never had ten, only sjs, and now i know how to stop it, the last 2 flare ups i rid myself of before they became an issue.

As for frail and sickly, not at all, i just don't have a great deal of explosive energy. I probably lose 1 to 2 hours a day to being ill, you lose 8 going to work.

Not to mention how much a career shortens your lifespan, takes you away from family and kids and introduces the main cause of stress in most peoples lives. My most stressful days are when a colonist in rimworld dies or if i have to go to the shop to get loo roll.

Start your own blog or if you're in high school/college join your school paper. After you've written enough so that you have a good amount of samples and are comfortable with your skill level, you can start pitching to publications.

Look for websites, newspapers and magazines that publish the kind of content you're interested in writing.

Find the editor's email and send them a pitch. A pitch is a short description (around 400 words is good) of an article you want to write for them. Make sure to include links to 3 articles you've previously written. If you're good enough and are consistent, you should be able to work your way up to regularly getting gigs that pay $100-$400 per article.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/may/08/how-to-pitch-freelance-articles-to-editors

Pro-tip: Games journalism is dying. The pool of paying gigs is constantly shrinking. Game reviews don't pay nearly enough for the amount of time you need to put in them to actually do them right. And a lot of the people with the most clout are pretentious, passive aggressive assholes who hate their job, hate video games, hate gamers and hate people who read games journalism. But if you absolutely insist on doing games journalism, specialize in VR and esports. That's what publications are looking for.

Jobs writing about anime are almost non-existent. The weeaboo boom is over. There's only one English language print magazine left in America, and they don't pay much and getting paid is a fucking hassle. I doubt they'll be around (at least in print) five years from now.

Comics writing is kind of a mix between those two.

You should be able to carve out a consistent run of well-paying gigs by working with local publications and find yourself a niche.
