You were probably shooting from up close with that 58mm? If you shoot from very close your DoF is short, even at f/5.

I'd suggest to include the neck and whiskers at least. It's annoying if almost everything your eye wants to look at is immediately heavily blurred.

Got focus peaking on my camera. But without any useful assists, it sure is a little trickier.

That, however, would be all the more reason to pick your DoF to be a little wider than absolutely necessary.
