>>

50mm is a nice "normal" look, but if you want to shoot big things, you need a wide angle. I'd say 24mm if we're talking fool frame here.
>>
>>2927195
I use a 35mm on my aps-c for the same things. It is sharp, virtually no distortion so the best tool for stitching panoramas. Light and cheap. Compact.

Non-rechargeable lithium batteries are lighter but more importantly give out a lot more amps while retaining their discharge voltage. Simply put they are much more stronger. Also lithium batteries have very very low self discharge so they keep their charge for a loooong time, say a year or so.

What are the pros and cons of a canon 700d vs a sony a6000? I borrowed a canon 600d and enjoyed it, I'm looking to buy my own and the size of the a6000 is tempting me. There must be drawbacks to the sony, though

Like bad UI, menu system designed to punish the user, no service or any kind of support, bad lens selection if you can't afford $3000 lens a piece, that sort of thing?
If you want the performance then you are better off with a D3300, D5500, K-50, K-70 or K-S2.

No. When the battery is under load it drops voltage no matter what. The nominal voltage written on them is for unloaded state. Plus the regular alkaline and carbon-zink batteries died quickly dropping voltage more so the devices needed to be designed for a wider voltage range to work.

the menu might not be as good but when you get your main settings done you only need to change a couple of things max, plus you get those two mappable buttons

the rest doesn't matter, you're only gonna get 2-3 lenses max anyway unless you're a pro or something. So you can get used or get an adapter for your canon gear

>>
Why are there no weather protected low-end cameras? k-70 or k-s2 for first camera? I'll be out in the mountains, lots of light but the camera needs to be sturdy. Going to get the 18-135mm WR f3.5-5.6, seems the most reasonable.

I cant figure mine out; even after adjusting the diopter to most clear, the image is still blurry as fuck! Really dont understand what I could be doing wrong. Even focusing to infinity and looking through the magnifier it still looks blurry as hell at best.

Using the TTL prism is difficult unless its very bright out. Should I get a different focusing screen? I have the standard one atm I believe.

My friend is selling his Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens for $150. Is this a good deal?
I only have a kit zoom with my oly pen and I want something with a fast aperture. At first I was looking at the oly 17mm 1.8 but they price is considerably higher at $250 in the used market.
Is the panasonic 20mm already wide enough for my needs like everyday snapshots, street photography, indoor family photos and selfies?

Even the amazing SEL-55F18Z is just around $800.

The E-mount has a lot of lenses a normal hobbyist can easily afford.

And if you were tight on money this month and just broke it, you could buy a FE 50mm f/1.8 for under $160.
>>

Pentax has the 50/1.8 for $100 and the 55/1.4 star lens for $500.
>>
>>2927673
>>2927669
If you also have a telezoom, get a Marumi DHG +3 or maybe +5.

Don't bother with non-achromat filter lenses, they suck balls.

Advantage vs extension tubes is that they keep more light. And unlike the other anon suggested (probably with shitty close-up lenses in mind), a quality achromat's glass is not very noticeable on most lenses.

> 50/1.8 for $100
That's not even a FF lens.

And my point was that you can afford a 50mm on the Sony E-mount. That you could go down to a 50mm Yongnuo -which is an actual FF lens- on Canon doesn't matter for that.

> the 55/1.4 star lens for $500
It is *so* great that you can pay $500 for a much worse, non-FF lens.

https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-FE-Carl-Zeiss-Sonnar-T-STAR-55mm-F18-on-Sony-A7R-II-versus-Pentax-smc-DA-Star-55mm-F14-SDM-on-Pentax-K-3__1252_1035_538_914

Just check the sharpness field map for starters.

Now Canon/Sony, at least for this month's 8 newly announced lenses.

Which will initially be EF and E-mount followed by PL mount later.

Cinema lenses, so they'll probably actually be too expensive for /p. But I'd say in the context of who gets ignored, (not) getting 8 Sigma lenses must count something.

Considering upgrading from a D3300 soon. Should I fall for the fool frame meme or stick with a crop sensor like a D7200. I've got 2 crop sensor lenses (kit 18-55mm VRII and a 55-200mm VRI, and an old 28mm f/3.5 AI which could be FX) and one 50mm 1.8G which I believe is FX.
Thanks for your help

I just bought this lot for €170, did I do good? Of course, the camera is quite old, but I didn't want to spend top dollar on a digital camera whilst I only really shoot film. What would be other cameras you could recommend for second hand DSLRs? Which lens system is the most versatile? I was originally looking for an Olympus OM-D so I could use my OM-system lenses with an adapter, but the OM-D is m43 and the crop factor will lead to weird tele effects, apparently. Is there no way to effectively use film lenses on DSLRs?
>>
>>2927952
Do you actually need FF? If not then stay on crop and get the high-end body with the features Nikon likes to lock down on entry level like two control wheels, ergonomics and firmware features with a D7100/D7200 or maybe the D500 if you have money to spend.
>>
>>2927952
Well, do you need a D7200 or D750... or can Nikon perhaps upmarket you even further?

The only reason I'd need full frame is for the low-light performance and any possible speed it might afford me (though as far as I can see, the most I can get is 6 or 7fps shooting RAW). The D500 is a bit out of my budget (being >$3k at the moment), but a $1200 D7200 would be perfect

Can work with some lenses on some DSLR.

But I'd suggest you just do the adapting with an A7 II.

Like I said in >>2927963 I need a faster and more professional camera than my D3300, and my options are either crop or full frame. I often shoot things at high speed in low light, so better ISO performance would be a plus. So I'm stuck between a D7200 or an entry level full frame like a D610, or whatever Nikon plans to release soon.

You can get 11FPS on a Sony A6300 or A6000.

Though the D7200 is a compromise for something cheaper too.
>>

>FF low light meme
Your D3300 is already capable of that, don't listen to the Northrup idiocy. DX does NOT capture less light than FX. Your sensor is already one of the best today. What you gain from an upgrade is AF performance, better controls and more in-camera features. While the D600/610 gives you upgrade in sensor AREA it lack in AF and you will have to spend a lot more on lenses.
The D7200 gives you the better AF, better control and features while you can use your lenses you already have. IMHO this is the better option.

Hello fellow /p/hotogs.

I just made a cracking deal on the Swedish equivalent of craig's list. Some dude posted an ad where he sold out out a bag of gear that had been lying in his closet unused for some five years.

He just put a pic up and said camera gear for sale, asking price $100. Saw the ad minutes after it was posted, recognized the pentax K10D w battery grip, a pentax flash, plus the two cheap kit zooms 18-55 and 50-200. On top of that two additional lenses where you couldn't see the brand.

Saw the ad minutes after it was posted and just contacted him right away saying I took his offer and that my brother would be over to pick it up very soon. Thought it looked like good fun and value regardless what the other two lenses were.

Turned out it was a Sigma 18-50 mm f2.8 ex dc macro and a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 ex dc. The flash was the fairly recent Pentax af fgz360.

My brother said the guy was a bit stumped cause he was literally flooded with mails in the half hour it took him to get there.

Making a conservative estimate looking at ebay closing prices I reckon this bag of gear would fetch around $650 on the used market today.

Will play around with the K10D but might sell it later together with the kit zooms. The Sigma lenses and the flash will go on my K-30 for sure.

Just had to share that with you guys. Anyone else with stories about good deals on craigslist / ebay / thrift store / pawn shop?
>>
>>2927984
Cool.
>>
>>2927984
Even if it went for $300 it would've been a good deal. Now it's a killer deal depending if the Sigmas are in good condition. Did you ask why he was selling?

How is the learning curve from Nikon to Sony? I've hated every other Sony product I've used and if it has shit menus I'll probably pass. I'll have a look at an A6000 the next time I'm at a camera shop to test it out.

>>2927969
So full frame doesn't have 2x better performance with high ISO than crop sensor? I was under the impression bigger pixels meant more light collection.

>>2927976
>zoom out and crop later
>50mm prime
Okay... I might be getting a 35mm prime in the meantime so I can get that wide aperture and speed. I'm still learning so I take snapshits for granted.
>>
>>2927992
He said it had just been lying around in his closet to no use and he was in the process of getting rid of stuff. He lived at a pretty fashionable address in Stockholm so maybe he didn't care too much about money.
>>
>>2927994
> How is the learning curve from Nikon to Sony?
Small.

> if it has shit menus
It has the Sony menus. Which are mediocre, but not shit.

Main settings is a sectioned a list of lists, fn button has 12 tiled settings according to your preferences.

There are some other UI elements like a color diagram for the WB correction selection and stuff like that, but it's overall not particularly fancy.

> I'll have a look at an A6000 the next time I'm at a camera shop to test it out.
Sounds like a good idea. Also look at the A6300 and A7S if you were interested in the D7200 anyhow.
>>
>>2927994
You need good lenses for that. Also the D610 has an old sensor with worse gain than your crop sensor in the D3300 or in the D7200 meaning the difference is small, smaller than 1 stop.
The D3300/7200 sensor compared to the Canon 5Ds R sensor the performance is pretty much the same with the usual worse shadow recovery in the Canon. The pixel sizes are the same more or less so the DR and noise performance will be very similar.
This is why I said you have to have a proper need to go for FF apart from sensor performance. You gain much less form the D610 than from the D7200 and for more money. Much more money considering buying FX lenses.
I say go for a fully pimped out crop body and maybe later if you have the need go for FF.
>>
>>2927994
>So full frame doesn't have 2x better performance with high ISO than crop sensor? I was under the impression bigger pixels meant more light collection.
No, you're basically right. Still very much depends on the exact sensor, though.

https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-D7200-versus-Nikon-D750-versus-Sony-A7S___1020_975_949

Look at the idiotically named "sports" measurement for a summary score based on a SNR and colour accuracy threshold. Or better, the detailed measurements.

The A6300 and A7S seem a bit far out of my budget, since if I'm jumping ecosystems I'll need lenses too (or a metabones, but they're still $$$). THe A6000 seems fine, same megapickles, quick autofocus, etc. so I'll just play around and see which is more comfortable.

>>2928000
Thats a good plan. And I'm really just saving up for this as a side business since I've lucked out that my recent jobs have been in bright, midday Australian sun, so I might be better off with a wider prime (like a 35mm f/1.8) and a better crop body until I'm pulling enough for a full frame or comparable better crop.

Judging by that blurry as fuck photo you have more of a lens problem. Getting better lenses is always preferable to switching bodies.
That blurriness though is messing up my eyes, did you have a bit of hazing on the front element or were you shooting from behind a window (and glass sheets)?

Because I've been using legacy glass almost exclusively on both the a6000 and now the A7. I mostly do landscape shots that do not require (fast) af at all.
>>
>>2928022
Yeah, you shouldn't do that mistake again. Glass sheets in windows are not even and usually have some gunk on and completely destroy the image. In that plane shot though there is no other way of making the shot (that was made by every plane passenger ever).
Shooting through window glass is to be avoided at all costs unless there is really no other option.
Also next time try to plan ahead, visualize your shot and try watching the scene with one eye closed to see how depth translates in your perspective. And learn about hyperfocal distance. Have fun.

Admittedly that skyline picture was a snapshit since I was taking photos from a balcony. Yeah, normally I avoid glass but its difficult when I see a shot while I'm riding in a car and I can't roll the window down in time.
Still not too aware of how to do infinity focus since instructions differ like "focus 2/3rds of the distance to the horizon" or use a hyperfocal calculator (which isn't perfect if you're up in the air and unable to judge distances. Let me know if theres an easier way

I guess so.

>>

You need proper DOF markings on the lens or at least distance markings, without them you can only guess.
What I do is I set the aperture between f/8-f/16 depending on light and scene and just use liveview and put the DoF over the scene. I tried guessing it in the OVF but some parts of the scene were always a bit out to my tastes.
With distance markings only you can guess quite close.

But it's not 35mm, it's MF, like a lot of the old Agfas. Pic related is a somewhat old (1966) 35mm compact, but it uses that ridiculous Rapid cartridge system so I barely use it. It requires you to hand load 35mm film into an old rapid cartridge (max only ca 12 exposures) with risk of scratching the emulsion and the ISO is given by the length of a small metal bar, but I can't seem do get lucky and find some cartridges with normal ISO counts, only the ones for ISO 64. I once even ordered a whole box of old Agfa rapid cameras just for the cartridges, but they were all for 64. The 'fun factor' is heavily outweighed by the difficulty of use, even though it does give very comfy square photos. If you want a 35mm film point&shit, just go for a Trip35, they accept normal 35mm cartridges and have manually adjustable ISO up to 400. Also, the AE is somewhat better. They lack the classic look of Agfas though.

Yes, you're wrong on this. The LAEA4 adapter's sensor is based on mid-end performance camera.

In theory Sony could release LAEA6 / LAEA8 / LAEA10 and so on at a much more rapid pace of improvement that cameras.
It would essentially be like updating CPU on your computer.
But they won't, for reasons.

DX means that the image circle is only big enough to fill a DX/APS-C sized sensor and would vignette heavily on a FX/35mm sized sensor. The physical focal distance of the lens doesn't depend on the sensor size of the camera, only the perceived field of view changes.

If you're too poor to go fool frame, you might as well get the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. Probably the best cheap telephoto you can get for crop Canon bodies.

EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is not particularly sharp, I wouldn't bothere since you already have the f/1.8 STM.
>>
>>2928692

My budget is around $600 for a good telephoto lens. I have no real brand favoritism although I am quite fond of Tokina, Tamron, and Sigma warranties and build qualities. I'd rather not get another Tokina, though, since I really don't like the AF/MF ring switch.

I could get the Canon 50mm f/1.4 for about $300 (less after selling my f/1.8), it would be good for portrait photography but otherwise not sure. There are other 50mm f/1.4 or 30mm f/1.4 lenses by Sigma, Rokinon, etc.
>>
>>2928696
You are seriously going to regret getting the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM to replace the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. The only real upgrade in terms of a 50mm for you is the Sigma ART lens.

Alright so I'm upgrading from the kit lens on my NEX-6 (which won't focus for whatever reason). I'm like 99% sure to buy the Sigma 30mm f2.8 because i found that it was the most useful focal length and the price/quality seems hard to beat, but the Sony 50mm f1.8 is about the same price. Should I consider getting the Sony for that extra f stop or is 50mm too narrow on an APS-C camera for everyday use?
>>
>>2928783
There is also the Sigma 30mm F1,4. If you don't mind paying a bit more.
>>
>>2928783
50mm is pretty narrow for everyday use on an APSC sensor (80mm, like a short tele portrait lens). but I dealt with it for a better part of a year (got a nifty fifty first lens and ditched the kit lens entirely)
Unless you like it/can deal with it, you'll really never get any landscape shots and most likely end up shooting frames that isolate a subject. Which can be very good discipline for learning framing and composition.
the 35mm is more "general use" and would be more well-rounded. The aperture difference doesnt make that much a difference at all in terms of low light.

You might love or HATE using a 50mm on crop. I really loved it. But it's limiting.
>>
>>2928785
yeah i checked that out but i can't afford it because i get import taxes on $200+ buys

>>

I'd try to get the kit lens fixed myself. It is quite useful, even though I'd prefer a prime most of the time.

The Sigma primes for e-mount are almost all good. Only possible complaint I have is that they are not full frame (which doesn't matter on the NEX-6).

The Sony 50mm f1.8 is a fantastic lens, but it seems to be sold out everywhere. If you can find it I'd pick it up. It is a little long on e-mount, but it was my favorite lens when I was using crop.

Ya, Panasonic or Sanyo Eneloops *are* good, as are Hobbyking Turnigy.

You can also get the Eneloops as "Amazon basics".

Furthermore, things that don't draw as much power as a portable flash on 1/1 -say, remote controls, audio recorders and microphones, sound and light meters, ...- are theoretically just fine with Ikea Ladda, too.

I think they are using the same sensor as Hasselblad.

Developing new Medium Format digital sensor is insanely costly. Phase One had to charge 50 000 USD for the 100MP camera, just to keep a profit from the cost it took to develop it.
There is no way Fujifilm can pay for development of a new medium format sensor, and undercut Hasselblad's camera at the same time.

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4, a good buy at $450CAD (about $380USD)? I'm new to photography and only have a 50mm f/1.8 lens. Would like a zoom lens with a wider angle but also something for low telephoto.
>>
>>2929130
17-55mm f/2.8 is a good wide to sort tele focal lenght for crop sensors. You can get third party options like the Sigma or Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for a decent price.
>>
I realized I have taken everything but portraits so I want to get new lenses. I have sigma art 24-35, 50, and Nikon 85 prime.

Should I sell all and get a 24tilt and a 90 macro?
>>
>>2929154
Fuck the macro.
Fuck the Nikon 85

Get the 105 f/2 or f2.5

You won't be disappointed.

If you want to do as cheaply as possible, g7+speedbooster. I use a g7, came from a gh4. There isn't a better camera for $400AUD open box
>>
>>2927569
$150 would be cheap in AUD, don't know what country you are in friend. Put your zoom to 20mm and see if it's ok and go from there, I user a 25 as my normal
>>
>>2928374
one on left is definitely a Kodak Retina, on right looks like a cheaper body of the same type of design. They're not worth very much. You could keep them as heirlooms or try taking some pictures for fun.
>>
>>2927573
How much?
>>
>>2927761
I have a g7, its cheap and good, I like mine a lot. It literally weighs nothing

He's saying it's a gimmick, dummy.
>>
>>2929328
Everything is a gimmick now.

You can't easily reproduce the effect in photoshop without a lot of effort or time. Thus making it not worth.

You guys probably think medium format cameras are a gimmick too

i opened the kit lens up, un-jammed the barrel (which was what was causing problems), put it back together and everything worked except it wouldn't focus for some reason.
so i opened it up again, disassembled it thoroughly and put it back together, and now the camera won't even recognize it.
i may try again later but i needed a prime anyway so i got the sigma 30 2.8

Of course a mark 4 is better you cuck

I meant send it to Sony and hope they warrenty it out.

Oh well, if you need one they are only like $150 on ebay. But that 30mm prime will probably keep you happy for awhile.
>>
>>2931687
i bought it used in a different country so i don't think it was covered. it's probably like 4 years old, too.
>>

not breadguy but I dont know shit either. I am thinking about getting an a6000, can it use the same adapters for all of the lenses?
>>
>>2932324

Kind of.

It will work with most lenses in well lit situations, but it will slow down quite quickly as it gets darker.

The adapters work much better on the a6300.

Would you recommend a used a6300 over a new a6000.

Low light shots are probably what I like best.

I was initially thinking the Sony RX100 II but I assumed I would get into photography and wish I had the ability to change lenses. The Canon GX7 Mark II looked good too.

Can anyone make a good recommendation.

History: I played with the manual mode on a shitty old 12 mp Samsung and enjoyed it a lot. I actually got a few good shots (for a noob w/ a shitty camera) in with it too. I will probably only use this camera for travel and misc so the interchangeable lenses is not ultra critical.

And extra question, Why did this camera take decent pictures? Is it the Aperture? Is it the F-Number?

>Would you recommend a used a6300 over a new a6000.

It depends on how important adapted lenses with autofocus is for you.

Also worth noting that a6300 has some better video options too.

But if neither of those are important, the a6000 is a damn good price.

>I was initially thinking the Sony RX100 II

It is a point and shoot with a small sensor, little better than a cellphone camera. You would not get good low-light shots.

>The Canon GX7 Mark II looked good too.

Same issue. Small sensor.
>>
>>2932426
Thanks. I appreciate the input. I will likely be getting the a6000 then. The a6300 is out of my budget for the moment
>>
>>2932474

The Canon/Nikon adapters are kinda boring.

The Techart Pro with m-mount lenses is damn interesting though.

Mine arrives soon.
