It's a shitty boring photo of nothing. If I walked along some field at sunrise/sunset with my camera dangling lazily at my side with a wide open aperture and accidentally clicked the shutter, I'd produce this photo. The processing on these are just dull. I get that you were going for some faded retro flat look, but it just seems washed out, like you're looking through a dirty window or something. Looking at the histogram for these, you've got a lot of black, especially in the first, but your white point is way the fuck down. It just makes the photos look murky.
You can still give things a faded look by fucking with the top and bottom of the tone curve, but when it's imbalanced like that, with lots of black but nowhere near true white,

Don't entirely trust the histogram for the hardware one. I got rid of the glare and some annoying stuff in the doors and windows with the healing tool but I used some black brushing for parts of it so on the histogram it says there's a ton of blacks
That being said I totally agree with the low white point. It was very overcast and I didn't really adjust for it well

Yeah, I get what you mean about histograms. You can't use them as a crutch. But, often, they can show you general concepts and general areas where problems might be. They're like public polls. They may not be perfect, but they can show trends.
In the hardware store one, even though it's a little wonky, you can clearly see the imbalance between the white and the black. I'm not saying that that's always necessarily a bad thing, but most often when you have a really strong point (and even clipping) on one end and then the other end is a mile away from the end of the possible range, it'll give a photo a dull, murky look.

That was my biggest regret. I wanted to get as much of the tree as I could in the shot, but I worked with what I had on hand. I tried getting rid of the wide lens distortion, but I ended up reverting since I felt it added to the "outreaching" shape of the tree.

Yeah. Post processing is my weakest link. I thought the buildings looked boring, so I went for a very high contrast look to put more emphasis on the composition. Have to try something else with the picture. The subject is a cliché but I saw an opportunity and took it.
Just came back from shooting. This one was tricky to compose, because there was some building on the left and a pier on the right, so I didn't have much space to move the camera.

This is the most interesting part of the image for me. I'd have moved in closer, although changed perspective to keep some of those tiles at the bottom.
I think there's too much dead space at the top, and the entire foreground is too bright. The door at the left also makes me feel like I'm safe outside, and the bottle is too modern and distracting.
It could feel quite creepy closer in.

Well I bike everywhere and my friend is pretty good at running. So its all four of us running about a quarter of a mile to escape the pigs. One of the other kids was shit a running and got caught and the other was apprehended shortly

It's not you it's, and my dad, who has been into photography for 30 years agrees, it's most photographers. They get snobby. I've come to expect everyone saying my shit sucks because it isn't perfect. In his opinion irregularities can and often do make a picture more interesting, but back in the 70's/80's he was entering contests and he said people were just as snobby as I describe some of them on here. I'm not saying everyone is it's just what I see. It doesn't really bother me and I don't really think my stuff is horrid but I'm saving everyone the breath. I'm a noob to DSLR but I think I can take a workable shot at least. It's alright. Person(s) 1 always assumes person 2 takes pictures for the purpose of pleasing person(s) 1. It's not like that, it's just like, man I do it because it's fun and I like documenting where I've been and looking back on old pictures is fun. It's alright.

When I was talking to my dad about this, I described what I see as the "snobby bell curve"
On the X axis you have level of photographer experience, on Y you have snobbiness. You get beginner photographers are typically more timid and/or accepting due to either lack of skill or experience or just not caring, you get what I've heard many people refer to on here as the "Prosumers" people who are walking around with mostly pro-tier gear who often, not always, are the most abrasive because they believe they know everything and thus anyone "below" them is inferior. Then you get the pros and the people who are truly just really good but still hobbyists, like people who are like genetically enhanced with photography skills at that point, they typically have a mastery of the skills and equipment but at the same time understand that equipment is not everything and that every picture does not have to be absolutely perfect in order to be interesting and worth experiencing and from what I see tend to be more personable and easier to get along with. Not sure, maybe I'm crazy but I can't be the only one who notices this...

And maybe it has to do with gearfagging. Like sometimes I feel like I'm supposed to feel guilty because I bought an APS-C camera, or am using a "Rebel" instead of a proper full-frame EOS. Like what do they want, photography is NOT my only hobby, I want a nice camera but I just can't justify spending thousands on a body so quickly. Like I spend $750 what else do they want? Not that it actually matters to me but I feel as if people look down on "beginner" gear so much as being "memes" and "not proper gear" like just because I don't find it worth my money to buy a Hasselblad doesn't mean I don't enjoy the hobby and can't take fulfilling photographs.

For >>2921385 I'm not sure I intended it that way actually, I just thought the perspective was cool and actually when I went to look at the jpg I thought either my sensor fucked up and only recorded the blue channel or something, or the jpg was rendered wrong but no that's how the lighting was. I think the color was enhanced by a blue-ish tarp or ceiling in the building to the right.

Also if those are your pictures (no reason to assume otherwise) I like them, well composed but if I may offer a small criticism from my limited pool of experience the light looks a little artificial or something..Otherwise very nice I like centered photographs, but the lighting is really weird. Maybe it adds interest but it's not what I expected from the thumbnail.

Hey, is this in Bergen? Feel like i have a shot from exactly the same spot as you. And its a slight overdo imo, but it looks cool anyway. Maybe the small blue parts on the left are a bit odd though, i'd say either make em yellow too or have the cool contrast be a bigger part of the picture, although that might be hard to make work.

Good eye, my shots did have artificial lighting. I had two speedlights to create that shot. One behind him at an angle with a yellow gel attached, then one with an orange gel attached shooting from well above the camera. I had to use a tripod to capture the ambient light in the background of the scene, I shot at .5 sec shutter, and the flash "froze" him.

I was out trying out my new 120-400 sigma, so that was at 600mm equivalent on my crop. I don't think fill flash would have worked.

I would love any tips you have for shooting at long range, though. This is my first non-manual, long zoom.
I feel like it hunts for AF a lot at low light and at the extreme end it's soft. Also, only being an f5.6 at anything greater than 200mm is a pain in the ass. What ISO range should I stay at so that everything doesn't look like ass?

I just try to work with the light as much as possible, even if it means possibly losing shots. You'd have gotten a lot more light if you moved around to the left.
If it's soft at the long end, stay under. No amount of sharpening in post will really fix that. Also, f/5.6 isn't that bad... I use it a lot.
I will lower shutter speed if ISO goes above 2000, unless it's an action shot.

Not sure what went wrong. Used tripod, set a low ISO, used a sharp prime lens (Panasonic 15mm 1.7), and chose an good aperture, all in the name of maximum sharpness.
Yet... you are right. It's all muddy as fuck. It's shittier than most of my handheld shots.
This one is unprocessed without compensation, as metered by the camera. Took +2 and -2 afterwards.

Not by much. I was on top of an observation deck with the tripod as close to the edge as possible so I could have taken only a few extra meters worth of path.
