Hey p, first off all, this is a "gearthread" one I will find usefull, but might not be intresting to you so feel free to hide it.
I'll be traveling to africa, and I'll do the whole coastline by ground transportation so weight is key.
The camera needs last long(battary), stand sand and maybe a bump or to.
The quality is not so important, but i would wan't to blow some of the pictures upp a bit, but don't worry to much about it. What else should I consider?
I will not post a pricerange so anny helpful pointers will be apreciated.
Bonus question, do you think it's possible to get film for vintage cameras in africa?

Anny questions, feel free to ask and I realy hope someone will take there time helping me out with my troubbles.

Pic is taken with my sony phone, 4chan ruins the quality, but this is the reason I wan't something better.

Efficient Xiaomi USB power pack + foldable reinforced solar panel. You could also charge the camera batteries off the solar panel, just don't make it too small.

> stand sand and maybe a bump or to
Xiaomi Yicam 2 or Pentax perhaps.
>>
All Pentax cameras are built like tanks, take great pictures and are usually priced better than all of their competitors with similar features.

Fuji is a bit lighter as they're mirrorless but I don't know much about them and they don't have as many lens options as Pentax.
>>
>>2920603
PS: Suitable wattage for the solar panel... just assume you get ~40% of the rated power on the go and with conversion losses and make it so you can charge everything important in ~2/3 of a day.

A good solar panel can be the lighter option than carrying the equivalent batteries in about a week to a week and a half.
>>
>>2920603
Thanks, I also forgot to mention that film/actioncameras are out of the option because they have to little storagespace? no computers to take over to. looked in to solarpower, but the decent ones are to expensive for the buck. I got a cager 20k Maph powerbank that will last me for about a week, not to addidcted to power in the deserts off africa.
I've mostly looked in to compactcameras. don't know about this though.

>>2920605
you also recomend the Pentax so I will look in to that, you got a modell to recomend? no worries if you don't.

>>2920608
this is true, but foldeble solarpower with decent output are eather to heawy, to expensive or not sturdy/durible at all. I travel a lot and the people who gave them a try usally tell me to save the money. if, you got some partikilar brands that I should check in to I'll do that, but power is not my main concern.

>I also forgot to mention that film/actioncameras are out of the option because they have to little storagespace?
This one takes microSD cards. microSD cards *don't* have too little storage space - you can take a lot of 64-128GB ones before you even notice, and that's a shitload of photos and video then.

Far more efficient than even taking SD cards, since the NAND storage is ~as expensive and fast anyhow, but you loose the casing of the SD cards which is alone like thrice the size of the whole microSD.

>I got a cager 20k Maph powerbank
Can't comment on how *efficient* that one is for charging/discharging and voltage conversion between USB and internal lithium batteries (which you want it to be for a solar setup - getting 30% extra juice or whatever is kind-of a big deal in that situation, even if it's almost irrelevant on grid power).

I'm just suggesting Xiaomi for the power banks 'cause they're inexpensive and known good at this. And well protected against overcurrent and stuff, just in case.

> but foldeble solarpower with decent output are eather to heawy, to expensive or not sturdy/durible at all
They're relatively expensive and worth it only for trips of one week or more without power, yup. Solar panels aren't really worth it for more typical 1-3 day trips, which is what most people do if they go without a vehicle.

For those 1-3 days outside of civilization trips, you indeed better just take lithium batteries and power banks...

You are probebly right about the fact that I could just bring a whole lot of micro sd's, but I got no intrest in filming my trip. so better to go for a nice allround camera? or how is the picturequality? I would guess that a camera for photo purposes is better for me, but i'm not an expert, just a wanderer

> yup, but i'll be traveling africa for a year plus, and have no idea if I'll be able to get my shit over on a computer.
Africa isn't *that* uncivilized.

But yea, that kinda complicates things. I'm not sure where I'd get a solar panel that I could *expect* rather than hope to take abuse for one whole year, for example.

Storage-wise, I don't see how that changes much... what other storage is really better to carry around than microSD...?

Besides, assuming you brought, say, a SSD, you could actually do file moves / copies with your smartphone anyhow? Same for moving from microSD to microSD and the like.

> but I got no intrest in filming my trip. so better to go for a nice allround camera?
> how is the picturequality?
In that case, the Pentax should be better.

The Yicam 2 "4k" still looks better than your phone
(processed shot https://www.flickr.com/photos/edfy/sets/72157669053893573/ - I can't find a big album for unprocessed shots yet). Even its $60 predecessor does ( https://www.flickr.com/groups/2816471@N23/ ).

Having a fallback secondary camera like that *might* be a better alternative to carrying a wide angle lens for a Pentax.

> the cager is one of the best on the market for that pricerange.
Great.
>>
>>2920636
PS: Another advantage for a microSD is that you have an elevated chance of being able to send a copied card home to family and friends by letter for safe keeping, if you don't come across a faster internet connection. Which you however probably will if you stick to the coast.

Or maybe just as a memory / present to pass to a good friend made in Africa.
>>
>>2920638
well, i will not stick to the coast, but much simpler to expålain, if you are intrested in my itinerary, let me know.
and yes, you make a lot of good points, but microsds are also expensive so I will not be able to film and fill them up to quick. I only take photos that matters to me and I find nice and or disturbing (see the cowpicture) or once evry now and then I take them to explain to my mom so she stops worry. I will need a camera that uses sd or mico, not to much a diffrence if you ask me. it's more important that the camera I use don't only take like pictures in two houers before i need to charge it or replace the sd card.
when I travel true the sahara, i will do it by camel for the most part so not a lot to take pictures off. just want something simple, cheap and sturdy.

I do realy appreciate your info and inputs, you have no idea, because I'm lost on the camerafront. I will probebly end up buying a used camera annyhow. what do you think of this?

I have looked at canon g10, I could pick it up cheap. but what I realy like is the size of it.
anny better choises?
>>
>>2920648
> microsds are also expensive
The sharks I linked are around $3.8 - 16GB / $14.4 - 64GB / $32 - 128GB. Not really all that much.

You probably won't shoot more than 30MB images even in RAW on a 24MP camera, so that leaves you with *at least* ~2130 photos on that $14.4 64GB.

Three times as many if you do JPEG (not that I recommend it where RAW is an option).

Never mind these aren't the VERY cheapest cards... /g/ and I just like the well-known, meme-worthy sharks.

> it's more important that the camera I use don't only take like pictures in two houers before i need to charge it
I'd go with a Pentax DSLR as primary. K-50, K-70, something like that perhaps...?

> or replace the sd card.
That won't happen. See above.

> canon g10
That's not sandproof or weather sealed or rugged in any way...? I proposed the other cameras mainly because they're very strong in that department.
>>
>>2920663 (corretion)
> The sharks I linked
I'm apparently a genius and forgot the linkage:
http://www.gearbest.com/memory-cards/pp_337822.html

Well, dem sharks also exist on other stores and aliexpress and the like.
>>
>>2920666
don't be sorry, I've seen the meme and was able to google it, but i'm on a tight schedual, moneywise.
thanks for all input btw and now I know what I look for.
I would like to find a small handheld compact camera that is weathersealed and has decent battery, with sd/micro and usbcharger.
I don't want it to be to big and bulky, and not flashy (don't want to be robbed)
if you got some pointers for this I would be much abliged, but feel free to chill. you've been so fucking helpfull, I will defently start to lurk here a bit and check this board out.
I lurk a few boards.
>>
>>2920666
btw. found this list http://cameradecision.com/features/Best-Compact-cameras-with-Weather-Sealing

is there no wathersealed cameras that look like a normal camera (like the canon g3 x) but so much cheaper? i'm thinking $100-350 (might go a bit higher) maybe some older models I could find and pick em upp cheap.

thanks again.
>>
>>2920703
and yes, I understand I can't get the same specs, but just the sime kind of simple look to it.

Unlike with Pentax' designs, I am almost certain some of these zoom-equipped compacts can't take sand well (it'll get into the optics and mechanics of the zoom lens).

Fixed lens cameras are probably fine it would be kinda odd if these weren't fully enclosed near the optics and in most places.

> is there no wathersealed cameras that look like a normal camera (like the canon g3 x) but so much cheaper?
There are the Ricoh / Pentax WG series compacts, but they very much look freaky. Not sure if that will get you robbed or ignored - they kinda look like cheap chinese cameras DESU.

The action cameras already mentioned and the Pentax DSLR already mentioned are just are the closest things that come to my mind.
