I was thinking of picking up a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 as my first wide angle. It's on sale discounted like 200 dollars. Should I jump at it? My body is a nikon d3300, will it play nice? Is there a better alternative?

Luckily I got my Nikon D600 >>2902528

General purpose wide angle for landscapes and architecture and shit, I've got a 35, 50, and 55-200 so I thought it covered the rest of the spectrum, so I can finally get rid of my 18 to 55 kit lens

Anyone got the Sigma 17-50 2.8? Reviews seem pretty positive and it can be had for under £250; seriously considering getting one and curious to hear /p/'s thoughts on it...

I'd personally want something wider, especially on a crop body, but for the price, it's okay I guess. Go for it.

I prefer the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 non VC, however, if you want optical stabilization, the Sigma OS version is best for the money.

Yes. I'm really tending for the 60D, but does it actually film better than the T5i or GH2?

Hey /gear/ I was referred here by the video thread. So I am looking for a tripod for use with my A6300 and was told one of the best ways is the get the legs and head separate but I'm not experienced enough to really know what to look for, I want something that has a decent enough pan, isn't too short and a ssystem I can put a slider on later. I know that is probably all really vague but I was really hoping you guys could throw some suggestions my way! Some anon in video said not to spend more than 80 on the head and 80 on the legs.
>>
>>2902737
I'd say that you'd highly appreciate the build quality and the physical controls of it...but that's just me.
>>
>>2902732
you think it's worth it? sounds like more stuff to break to me, i like keeping it simple

>>2902735
sigma 30mm 2.8 seems like the best value lens for E mount, and i don't have much money so i think i'm gonna stick with that one
>>
I need a good tripod, because my current one is beyond shit tier. I was thinking about the Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3, but I'm not sure. It is inside of my budget range, as I can get it for €290 and I don't want to go much higher than 300.

Any pros/cons, or suggestions for a better choice? Advice is much appreciated
>>
>>2902738
If you want a heavier tripod, go browse eBay.
There probably is some older model of something out there.

If you want a more portable one, how about the Dic&Mic E302 off aliexpress? (Alu variant, Carbon costs ~20-30 more)
>>
>>2902745
I kinda have a travel tripod similar to that and the lack of a removable head and arm are really what make me want a new one. Great for static shots and portability, awful for anything else.
>>
>>2902742
Yeah i already messed around with a 7D and a T3i before so i know how different they are on those tiers, but idgaf about build quality or body weight and dials, i just want the best video i can get out of each.
On the 60D i plan on installing Magic Lantern too.
>>
>>2902744
Have a look at the Dic&Mic E302C or the bigger models (P303C and so on).

Yea, it's actually good.

Other than that, Sirui and Benro are also worth a look, but they have so many tripods you'll have to browse them on your own.
>>
>>2902733
No you're not
>>
>>2902749
> similar to that
Okay, there are a bunch of variants on this that are possibly even made by the same company under a different name, but if yours doesn't even have a removable head, it sounds unlikely that it is very similar...

This one is actually good in a lot of situations and has a removable head.

That said, if it will stand in a studio, see if you can't find a cheap Manfrotto 055XPROB or another older tripod.
>>
>>2902737
Yup, between these, I'd go with the 60D.
>>
>>2902758
I guess I got the AFAITH equivalent which is likely worse. Sorry if I'm being hard to help, it's just for some reason I find tripod stuff more confusing than buying a camera. I'd get a VT 4000 Magnus and call it good if I could put a slider on it. So if it's not a dumb thing to ask is buying legs separate from a head that will have a ball head on it possible or would I need a high hat?
>>

Get new leather.

Remove old leather (lots of guides online), it's mostly just flaking it off with an exacto knife, sometimes you need paint stripper.
Buy a new one of whatever color / texture you want from Aki-Asahi. Wait ~10-30 days for it to arrive.
Apply it and you're good as new.

Removable tripod heads (and the tripods they sit on) almost always are mounted with 3/8-16 or 1/4-20 screws, same as cameras.

You definitely can get various kinds of legs. Of course, a hi-hat or mini tripod should be more versatile and stable than most other options, but if you wanted to you could probably shoot with something like depicted $2.5 plastic thing.

However, I suggest you yourself a favor and make everything use typical Arca Swiss (I like these better) or Manfrotto compatible QR plates for everything.
It's much easier if you can leave everything screwed on (heads/clamps below plates and equipment on top of lates) and just use QR mechanisms to swap gear.

This.

It's a little like buying into a camera system, but less expensive (unless you start talking some of the really spendy shit like Really Right Stuff and then it's just as expensive, if not more so).
>>
>>2902765
Wait a second I've been thinking about this wrong. Sliders sit on top of the head of a tripod, you don't have to take the head OFF the tripod, you just need a separate head for the slider. Someone call me a faggot if I'm wrong it goes

Camera
Head
Slider
Tripod

Connected with the normal tripod screw right?

So in theory I could attach a slider to the VT4000 with the normal screw then attach a second head to the slider!
>>
>>2902841
Sure.

Now if you want to make your life not so annoying, make sure the parts that you will want to detach quite often (Camera and probably slider, maybe more...) are sitting on Arca or (if you can't help it) Manfrotto plates / brackets...
>>
>>2902846
I don't know if I'm ready for that big of a commitment, I'm kind of a beginner to be honest. I'll definitely consider it when I move out of my baby steps!
>>
>>2902846
But uh how I was thinking about putting a slider on a tripod is normally how that's done right? I'm not an idiot with my understanding of it right?
>>
>>2902847
> big commitment
Just use the *compatible* plates and heads and stuff - it doesn't need to be Arca Swiss or RRS, can be typical Chinese gear.

It is not expensive then. Heads with Arca QR aren't more expensive than other heads. A cheap plate or simple clamp for it is like $5, and I see that some L-bracket specifically made with holes for the A6300's ports is ~$25.

> I'm kind of a beginner
If you don't do this from the start and pick up random gear with vendor-unique solutions, you will probably need to replace one-two different (and almost certainly inferior) systems and their accessories.

>>2902852
Yea, sure.

Of course many of the bigger sliders are kinda better set up on *two* tripods and you could also have a slider on a head in some circumstances and stuff and things, but it all can be screwed on.
>>
>>2902863

Yup. Pick Brackets. clamps, heads, whatever to be compatible with each other.

> my travel tripod has this same kind of head and what not so that makes sense. Or am I off base and an idiot?
No, it's probably that way and it's the system that I'd suggest.

I never had the actual ball head you linked. But it seems exactly like the most popular cheap model on Aliexpress. Well, the same model rebranded and market up by ~25%...

I'm a bit into older, manual lenses. Since I have an entry level Nikon, M48 lenses are out of question (since the lack of infinity focus). I've found these two recently (factory f-mount lenses), but I don't know these lenses at all, and I could not really find enough on the net. (Right now THIS focal length would be nice to me, but Nikon lenses are just sooo expensive.) What is your opinion about these two lenses, /p/? Thanks. (Pictures are of the lenses.)

Better, but sample shots seem a bit hazy somehow. And it feels a bit unpleasant to me somehow.

Still not a lens that I'd actually be using, I'd probably take a decent modern $150+ lens any day - but I guess I'm not much of a vintage lens shooter.

I just had an umbrella crumple on me after a gentle fall. I was looking at cheap replacements, and I noticed this type being sold with what look like plastic ribs. Does anyone know if these are stronger than the typical bent metal ones?
>>
>>2902974
> Does anyone know if these are stronger than the typical bent metal ones?
I figure they'll be trivially more robust since they probably don't deform permanently quite as quickly.

But if it's a small umbrella, a cheap replacement is like $3.5 with shipping - not really worth thinking about.
>>
Fuark, when will Tamron replace their 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 VC USD zooms?

Hello /p/!
I'm fairly new, but i have been lurking for a while now. I'd really like to get into photography so i've been looking at some gear to buy. I've done a bit of research and i asked a friend of mine who is a professional photographer what would be some good starting gear.
Right now my eyes are set on the following:
http://www.kamera-express.nl/product/12190210/nikon-d5300-zwart-18-105mm-vr/?gclid=CjwKEAjwrcC9BRC2v5rjyvSbhWASJACKkjDzIbhisgNcAiWMGmkZG1FeogBKC3n0XocKeRgi1BXCPRoCJyHw_wcB

With this extra lens:
https://www.mediamarkt.nl/nl/product/_nikon-af-s-50mm-f-1-8g-nikkor-1158077.html

I have around a thousand euro's to spend. I'd love to get your opinion about this, and any other suggestions you might have are more than welcome.
Also, i'm a complete noob when it comes to this so any other general tips for starters are very much appreciated!
I'd like to do some astrophotography one day and i'd like to be able to shoot in low lighting situations. Besides that i just want to go out, explore and take some pictures to practice. As i said, i'm a complete starter but i'm eager to learn.
Thanks in advance!

Not with this camera. It can do long exposures like any even halfway decent camera, but it's not a good "low light" camera overall.
>>
>>2902993
it always helps 100 % of the time to buy a cheap P&S from ebay/Craigslist (usually less than 30 €) and shoot with that for as long as necessary to get a feel for what you want in a system and lenses (low light? better "reach?" larger files?). Bit like buying a cat before getting a baby.

Hmm thanks for the heads up. As I understand it, the bigger the frame, the better it will work with low lighting. It's also a matter of sensor technology.

> I thought that the d5300 has, besides from going full frame and spending thousands of euro's, the largest type of frame on the market (correct me if i'm wrong).
Yep, but all low light cameras *are* basically full frame.

A D5300 or D5500 is fine at ~ISO 1600 to maybe 6400. But that's not very low light. It only just works out when you shoot a wider aperture lens (maybe f/1.4 or wider) with people indoors or perhaps in some street lighting situations... but not very reliably so, and your DoF is also obviously quite narrow at that point.

Current FF low light cameras will do have about equal noise performance at ISO 25600. Which tends to suffice a lot more comfortably on even f/2 or so lenses.

> Do you have any suggestions on which camera's preform better?
A7S II, A7S would be the typical choice.

Dic&Mic E302C. Or its bigger variant P303C.

(For my body height and purpose -which is not shooting above people's heads-, the E302C does fine.)

I also like the Siruis, some still should be $250-ish.

> Oh shit should mention I want Arca-Swiss compatibility and having a detachable monopod would be awesome too.

Speaking of which, the Sirui PS monopods are actually what I use for most purely urban trips / events in the city. Dic&Mic is for everything else, but in crowded locations the Sirui PS is definitely easier.

Okay, it's a value closer to 1.5 than 2, in terms of ISO noise.

Of course, it's again the same for DR, which doesn't usually deviate that much between cameras.

Anyhow, I'd say I can shoot about ~2 stops different in practice, but I guess technically ISO noise is closer to 1.5 stops different.

(amusingly keh is run by literal jews)

Anyway though, if you want to know how much a hunk of gear is worth on the open market, keh is pretty much your best source. They are ULTRA conservative on the grading side (their EX grades are all pretty much exactly like new), and you can add/subtract a couple of hundred bucks based off of local market/what you think you can negotiate down to, but if you want to know how much something's worth, keh is it.
>>
>>2903369
>>2903368
Based the pricing on B&H Photo. But if you can get it for cheaper, more power to you.

>>2903387
KEH is a bit risky to buy from since it may or may not to be grey item (sometimes sell at the same as retail pricing).

I've gotten a few vintage lenses and gear from them though that no one else remotely as reliable sells though.
>>
I'd like to ask about displays. Is anything with PVA okay for photo editing? Or maybe not okay, but still better than your average cheap home-oriented TN/IPS display?

I have 22" TN display and 21,5" IPS one. I wouldn't mind having two 17" Eizo S1721 around my 21,5" (and those old little eizos are dirt cheap now). Right now my 21,5" IPS displays completely different image than my 22" TN and i have no idea which one should i follow.
>>
>>2903388
>KEH is a bit risky to buy from since it may or may not to be grey item (sometimes sell at the same as retail pricing).
...you know keh is a reseller, right? They only deal in used gear, along with how you can ask them about the providence of any item and you'll get a rapid reply.
>>
>>2903389
TN displays are usually limited to sRGB colour profile level output while decent IPS are around AdobeRGB, which is closer to real life.

One of the biggest problem is that most people neglect having the right GPU to output to the potential of their displays.

Get both that's 10bit plus color depth capable.

I have a 27" 10bit editing IPS monitor and it so much more colourful and accurate than my auxiliary TN monitor.
>>
>>2903390
I'm fine with using KEH as a last ditch effort but I prefer to support licensed sellers as I enjoy my CPS support.

>>
>>2903410
24-120mm f/4 VR is a great all-in-one lens. If you don't have any FX lenses, it's a great start before getting into the f/2.8 pro zooms and faster primes. The 50mm f/1.8D is only worth a few bucks imho (G version is awesome though).

$1,800 is a great, yet fair price for the combo, based on grey pricing.
>>

>>
>>2902993
Any more thoughts on this? Thread got kind of derailed by mister ''canikon''.
>>
>>2903454
Your friend is leading you correctly. I might point you to a 35mm 1.8 instead of the 50mm 1.8 if you can afford it because that'll give you a more general use field of view whereas the 50mm will give you a more portrait field of view, but neither one is bad to own and you'll have fun playing with that faster lens.

But that's a solid beginning setup. It'll be a hot minute before you fully outgrow what it can do.

Aside from that, I'm a fan of the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. When you get your camera, read your manual...check out the info in the sticky (ignore the gear stuff, I don't know when that was updated last), hit up youtube (adorama and b&h both have surprisingly good tutorial videos)...cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials has some good reading too.

Basically, just start googling stuff up and reading about it. When you get your gear, start trying to practice the stuff you're reading about and have fun.

Yes, I too know they have this special thing where they fuck you over with poor service unless you pay even more in advance.

Yea, it IS a stark contrast to how it usually is with other companies, namely that you pay a reasonable fee for expedited service as-needed and don't have any extra requirements like having to own more than the product that is currently damaged...

But with their position in the market and Sony also having jumped on the same faggot train, I unfortunately can't recommend to drop them completely. Doesn't mean that you have to suck it up. Yes, the risk costs less on average, why else do you think they offer this "service"?

Definitely shit for this price category.

Most of the new $1k+ cameras have decent to great 4k video. This one does not.

Also doesn't have a 1920x1080 120FPS option and so on.

>>

Yes, resolution is an important part of a video's quality.

> Inb4 this means it's the only thing that matters

Ultimately it's just a $1k+ camera body that doesn't offer what you'd expect from a new mid-range body..

>>2903540
>Which is better overall?
The A6300 is probably overall the best device here if you do both photo and video.

A GH4 should be a bit more competent if you primarily care about video.

But you'll have to read / watch reviews anyhow.

> Does it have a flip out screen on any of the models?
All of the Panasonics mentioned do, unless remember something wrong.
>>
>>2903552
What lens would you recommend for the GH4?
>>
>>2903553
Rokinon Cine 85mm T1.5.

More seriously, while that is a good lens and Samyang (plus Rokinon Cine) in general are probably interesting, how the fuck would I know what lenses you actually will need or want to use?
>>
I've had my eye on Sony's 30mm macro lens for my a6000. I've tried reversing a couple of legacy lenses, but the focus window is tiny and a pain to deal with in the field.

Outside of the 30mm id like to find a Tamron 90mm 2.5, but I'd rather get one through Amazon since I've got a shitload of credit there.

Anyone have recommendations for macro on the a6000?

The 90mm FE macro is one of the best macro lenses you can get. Try that one.

30mm is fine. Be patient and you can get some truly sharp images. Lens hood is weird at first, but great for nature macro work.

So long as you don't live in a place that gets above 80 degrees in the summer and never want to use it for more than around 20 minutes in a row...guess that's why they have shitty battery life.
>>
>>2903514
video quality is just fine
>>
>>2903566
Already factored in that it can overheat shooting 4k.

It's the primary reason why the Panasonics would be better for video.
>>
>>2903566

Recent firmware update fixef a lot of the overheating issues.

Still has teouble with 4k video though. Like a 30 minute continuous max.
>>
>>2903575
Yeah but you're being a little disingenuous not mentioning that to the anon, along with the rolling shutter problems to that anon...both of which can be far bigger deal breakers to someone depending on what kind of projects they're doing, than maximum resolution.

Give the complete story mate.

(and I do agree with the Panny rec, but still)
>>
>>2903557

Tamron has a very nice 90mm f/2.8 Macro. Not gonna compare to the FE one, and there is no native e-mount version, but should work pretty well with the LA-EA3 adapter.
>>
>>2903576
>Still has teouble with 4k video though. Like a 30 minute continuous max.
That's really a form factor problem. Pushing that much data both uses a lot of juice and creates a lot of heat. That tiny body just can't handle that much heat. It's like how you'll never see the kind of performance on a cell phone that you'll see on something the size of a laptop (assuming comparable tech levels of each).

To really fix that, they'll have to entirely re-engineer the electronics...and even then it's not a sure thing that it's even possible.
>>
>>2903574
If it has no 4k, whats the max it shoots at?

Eh, I'd actually probably say that your choice is between the 70D (which has ML and a little less video quality than the 80D, not sure how they stack up on low light though) and the GH4, add that if you're going hard in the paint for video, I'd say that the deciding factor between those two is do you want video quality (GH4) or do you want autofocus (70D).

What are you planning on shooting?

why even bother buying L lenses in 1:4 its like a $150-200 difference

Plus super inefficient and an absolute waste of money to spread your kit over two companies.

Stick to canon -- better lens range, you can drop their pro level cameras off cliff and they'll still work -- then just buy better and wider array of canon lenses instead of wasting your time with both bodies

Based on what impression? I think it's actually really quite fine on mine, right to the finish.

Certainly, the head that comes included is less fancy than a really good one, but even that one is actually quite good. The deficits are mostly about fine control when you use it half-arrested, the base tilting a little (quarter degree or so?) when you have the horizontal pan unlocked, and tiny details like that.

> Not sure if I'm willing to risk a few thousand dollarydoos worth of gear on a cheap tripod...

Small area or spot AF and you kinda have this problem solved on a good AF system, unless you are working with an extremely narrow DoF and want to get the eyes right.

I haven't seen that review, but my E302C clearly is vertical regardless if the legs are extended fully or retracted fully or in one of the prepared three angles you can lock them in.

Not like uneven legs would be something easy to miss anyhow, the head has a spirit level already included, and that's obviously not the only reason photographers would notice anything more than *extremely* (read, not relevant to stability of a tripod0 marginal slants.

> as well as the anodized finish wearing off (scraping off other parts). Seems like a potential failure point if fully laden with a few kilos worth of gear.
Didn't really do that either, but no, it doesn't even seem like that would be a realistic way this could fail.

I mean, even if you theoretically scraped off a whole area of paint, made the material oxidize, then scraped off the oxidized layer, again and again, you should see and feel that defect long before anything collapses.

2nd: i'm biased when it comes to kit lenses. but my budget is not high.... i was thinking of a wide (12 or 14) + regular (27 or 35) but the total w/ Fuji would cost me $1500. that's too much for me

3rd: i don't know much about the sony lenses, if anyone could advise me about that i'll be thankful

4th: about my preconception w/ the kit lenses: can anyone take 2 pictures, one w/ the 35mm and other with a kit lens in 35mm?
preferably showing depth of field

If you want to keep a compact body, go for a Sony NEX-6 if you're destitute, but the a6000 is still one of the gold-standard APS-C cameras around. The a6300 is an incremental upgrade, but I highly doubt you would be able to afford it.

Yep. That's what's it's really designed for. Allows you to mount gear on your should strap, but I love using it as a holster.

They also offer a neat lens-mount adapter so you can change lenses, essentially one handed. Probably my next accessory purchase.

nikon D200 vs. D7000, thoughts on wjat's the best buy lads?

not too picky on the body but i'll look into the a6000. I can always save up and sell my NX onward but then I start hitting diminishing returns for my skill level if i got the a6300

Has anyone used a MIR 24N 35mm lens? Is it any good and/or comparable to manual focus Nikkor lenses?

Consider that I'm not an expert on the subject to feel confortable about doing this decision by myself.

My question is what reasonably affordable camera could be useful if I wanted to take shots like the one in the picture? I'm going to Norway some weeks and wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to take some beatiful sky pictures like this one. I guess it has a lot of editing, anyway.

you pretty much just need a tripod and manual shutter speeds

A fast wide angle lens would also help. You can get a chinese knock off versio n of the sigma 18-35 for like $50 and it's fine

They got a bunch of firmware updates.

The 18mm is still trash, and the 35mm isn't what you would call lightning fast, but their autofocus is improved.

Thank you. Where could I find that kind of chinese knock off version?
>>
>>2904219
ebay, just go to camera, lenses, filter by mount and set it to wide angle

Nice to know, thanks. Should I look into any specific characteristcs when buying the camera for the purpose of getting those interesting shot of the northern lights?

Looking for a compact with:

- Interchangeable lenses
- Screen the rotates completely around so I can frame video shots from in front of the camera
- External mic input

I will be vlogging from Japan. Lots of interviews/portraits.

This? Or is there something else I should check out?

Why did you ask in the almost dead and bumped off thread and not the new one?

Anyway, the best bet would be mirrorless for the small size. Sony, Fuji, and m4/3 are the only ones worth looking at.

Sony e-mount (a6300, a7 series) can take great photos and video, but none of them have an LCD that flips around though so they would be out (though it will let you control it wirelessly with a smartphone).

Fuji would work, but limited video options. They have some nice affordable lenses even though the selection is rather limited.

Best bet would be micro four thirds, specifically the panasonic gh4 which is great for video. The m43 sensor is smaller than the Fuji and Sony sensors which means worse low light performance, but it is considerably larger than a cellphone or point-and-shoot.

Be careful buying a camera in Japan. With the exchange rate it is more expensive, warranties are not honored outside of Japan, and some companies release Japanese only firmware models.

Are you gonna be one of those annoying gaijin that runs around taking videos of everything from buying train tickets to ordering mcdonalds?
