I was using the ef-s 55-250, but I'm probably going to use the kit 18-55 underneath the hoop next time. I'd love to have a faster lens, but any of the lenses you've suggested cost more than all my gear combined. And I could probably do better with what I've got rather than throw money at gear.

Shooting canon crop means you really need* that f/2.8 when shooting indoors, and 200mm on the long end gives you a nice, comfy 320mm fov for getting tight in on the action.
*not actually need need, but it makes life so much easier when shooting action because you don't have all that much latitude for raising exposure in post. Oh, and I'm not saying you should buy from that amazon link, just giving you an idea of price.

In general I applaud this attitude; however there are sometimes when gear absolutely does matter. Shooting action (sports, wildlife, that kind of stuff) is one of those places where gear does matter. It matters so much that reliable autofocus is literally what put Canon on the top of the heap for ages when it comes to sports photography (and that legacy is why you still mostly see white lenses on sidelines).

In your case, part of what affects your ability to get good images is your lenses are slow. When combined with how crappy Canon files are in raising exposure, you have a hard floor in ISO (above 1600 gets very unusable quickly), aperture (f/4 is the best you can hope for), and these with that lack of file latitude limit what shutter speeds you can use (can't freeze motion).

I'm not saying that you can't get good shots or that your camera isn't still a decent camera, just that you're fighting an uphill battle trying to do what you're trying to do with that setup.

Yup, a 70D. I love the camera, but I'm not going to pretend it doesn't have flaws, and Canon sensors are shit above ISO 1600...maybe for like a 10 DPI black and white newspaper print it'd be ok, but anything more? Yeah, no.
