Probably the best way to do it on a moderate budget is to mount a Zoom H1 to the rear bumper or trunklid and point it in the general direction of the exhaust. A suction cup mount is a good way of doing this, I recommend the Delkin Fat Gecko since it's easy to position and grips well. The Zoom+Delkin combo should be about $150.
